Spring Training Game Wrap 3/6/2026: Giants 6 Reds 3

Tyler Mahle and Trevor MeDonald combined for 5 shutout innings and Luis Matos led the lineup in a Giants win in Scottsdale.  Key Lines:

Jared Oliva CF- 1 for 2, HBP, 2 SB(6), R.  BA= .400.  Oliva has 6 of the team's 14 SB's and is the only player with more than 1.  He also appears to be a plus defender in CF.

Daniel Susac C- 1 for 3.  BA= .400.  EV 105.6 MPH.

Victor Bericoto RF- 1 for 2, 2B, SF, R, RBI.  BA= .500.  Bericoto continues to rake although his EV's were unimpressive today.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 2, HR(2), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .467.  EV 115.2 MPH Distance 454 ft.  Wow!

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 3, 3B, R.  BA= .273.  Triple was a line drive to CF with EV 109.2 MPH.  5 of 6 hits XBH on the spring so far.

Luis Matos LF- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(2), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .450.  I could see a case for Matos and Oliva to be the two reserve OF's to start the season, but both bat RH.  Matos has 0 K's and 0 BB's so far.

Tyler Mahle RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  The strikeout pitch got him out of trouble.

Trevor McDonald RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.00.  McDonald is stating his case to be the first depth starter or better.

Caleb Kilian RHP- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.08.  FB up to 99.2 MPH.

Juan Sanchez LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  I've liked Sanchez for a long time.  Maybe this is his season to break through?

J. T. Brubaker RHP gets the start tomorrow on the road against the D'Backs.

  1. Even if it means nothing, it's fun to watch the Giants win.

  2. Rooting for Caleb Killian as he’s a former Giant who I remember doing really good for us in the minors before traded to the Cubs for Kris Bryant.

  3. I know that it won't last all season, but I'm excited to see the number of .400 hitters on this team, right now. And we've still to see Devers really get started this spring.

    1. And Adames, too, it would be nice for them to "really get started this spring" before the Giants face the Yankees, Padres, Mets, and Phils to open the season, followed by the Orioles and Reds in their first 19 games, all of whom are expected to be as good as or better than the Giants!
In fact, the Giants schedule looks formidable with few breathers before the All Star Break!

  4. I've been going back and forth as to whether Eldredge should make the 26 man roster or not. Susan Slusser asked a group of scouts that question and even they are split. Heard something today that should be an important part of the decision. If Eldridge makes the team then Ron Washington can continue to work with him on his defense..I hope he makes the team

    1. Wherever Eldridge ends up, we all agree he needs to play every day. That's a given AAA, but maybe not as much in the MLB. I'm not completely sold on the narrative that Eldridge has nothing left to prove at AAA. He did very well, at a very young age for the level. But he didn't set the PCL on fire. I don't think it would be the worst thing if he lands back in Sac for a month or two.

I noticed his prospect ranking actually fell slightly from '25 to '26 in BA, MLB, and Baseball Prospectus.

  5. If I recall, Matos has reverse splits, and so could replace a left-handed hitting outfielder along with Oliva.

  6. For some reason, I also feel that Eldridge hasn't had the outstanding spring yet to suggest he's a clearcut DH/1B yet. Jake Holton looks good too but whether his spring will hold up during the regular season looks unclear also. Where is Jerar? I suppose this is why Dominic Smith is a Brave now.

  7. I say let kid play. He will be playing every day between DH and 1b. Washington can continue the defense arc. And he makes the line up very deep. As long as he hits .250+, I don’t see a good reason not to. The bench looks good with Schmidt, Matos and Susac. And you have one to play with.
