Spring Training Game Wrap 3/1/2026: Giants 9 Athletics 1

The Giants 14-hit attack and shutdown pitching produced a runaway win.  Key Lines:

Christian Koss SS/2B- 1 for 1, BB, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .455.  Koss continues to show a knack for getting his hits with RISP.

Casey Schmitt 2B- 2 fr 3, 2B, 2 R, RBI.  BA= .231.  Are Schmitty and Koss competing for the same roster spot or can they both make the team?

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 2, 2B, RBI.  BA= .455.  Chapman continues to hit the ball hard in early spring.  EV 101.2 MPH.

Osleivis Basabe PR/3B/SS- 2 for 2, 2B, 2 R, RBI.  BA= .600.  Organizational depth.

Victor Bericoto PH/RF- 2 for 2, R, RBI.  BA= .538.  Bericoto is a spring phenom.  Has he moved ahead of Jerar Encarnacion on the depth chart?

Logan Webb RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, R, 0 BB, 3 K's, 4/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 1.80.  Please be careful in the WBC!

J. T. Brubaker RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.00.  That's more like it!  Giants need his veteran swingman savvy.

Caleb Kilian RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 3/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.00.  This was Kilian's third appearance of the spring and the first I've ever seen him pitch.  Wow!  He has this short-arm delivery where he just raised his arm and shoots a 98 MPH dart making it extremely hard for batters to see or time.  He only has 1 K in 3 IP, but that stuff should induce a lot of very weak contact.

Landen Roupp RHP makes his second spring start on the road agains the White Sox today.

  1. Jerar Encarnacion is rapidly being buried on the depth chart...he's got not MLB track record, not been great with injuries, was not hustling to 1st base in yesterdays game, and offers essentially nothing in the field. I think Melvin was the one who was really high on Encarnacion, so that particular foot in the door no longer exists.

Bericoto is hitting great and with XBHs but also doesn't have the history or pedigree...so I wonder if he can keep it up. I think Tony is glad to let the hot hands hit.

Really glad to see Ramos, Schmidt, Koss, Matos, Eldridge, Parks Harber, Nate Furman and a few of the others playing well off the bat, so to speak. Doesn't mean a think, but it bodes well for chemistry, and it's also much better than falling flat! Cheers Doc.

    1. Bericoto has hit well in the minors. His big negative is he doesn't really have a position. He started out as a catcher but quickly moved to corner OF and 1B.

    2. I have seen passing comments over a couple years that Bericoto had the strongest OF arm in the system. Would be interesting to hear more on that.

  2. Does Encarnación have a position that he's "good" at?
