Spring Training Game Wrap 3/7/2026: Giants 7 Rangers 5

Carson Whisenhunt and Jerar Encarnacion got their springs back on track to lead the Giants home half of a split squad to a win.  Key Lines:

Casey Schmitt 2B/1B- 2 for 4, R.  BA= .364.  Schmitt was the odds on favorite for the 5'th infielder role coming into camp and has done nothing to lose it.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 0 for 1, 2 BB, R.  BA= .261.  OBP of .414 against a BA of .261.

Jerar Encarnacion RF- 3 for 3, 2B, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .269.  Still plenty of time left for Jerar to win a job.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 14.29.  A spectacular turnaround from his first two appearances.

Spencer Bivens RHP, Ryan Walker RHP, Will Bednar RHP and R. J. Dabovich RHP pitched a scoreless inning each.

Landen Roupp RHP gets the start today against the Cubs on the road.

  1. I've seen no Drew Cavanaugh mentions anywhere. Know what's up? Araez OPS'ed 3.200 in WBC yesterday, countered by a Bader dinger

    1. That was a helluva game for Araez! I think the improvement from starting the season with Fitzgerald in 25', to starting with Araez in 26' is an underrated improvement in the lineup!

  3. Although Matos didn't get a hit yesterday, he hit the ball hard twice and drew a walk (his first of the season), then scored.
    He is entering 2026 as a young 24 year-old (B-day Jan 28).
MLB career to date: 593 PAs, .231/.281/.369/.650

In 2024, Ramos had his breakout, career year at 24½ after very little to show in his brief call-ups before that.

Is Matos is ready for his break-out? He is younger than Ramos was when he had his, while neither had much to show for their MLB experiences prior.
Matos does strikeout at a considerably lower rate than Ramos.
Matos did have better splits in AAA:
    Ramos in 1101 PAs: .262/.337/.431/.768
    Matos in 686 PAs: .287/.345/.505/.849

Can Matos fill in for Ramos?

  4. The OF and DH competition is getting interestinger and interestinger.

May need to look to some trades to thin things out.
