DrB's 2026 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #2 Josuar Gonzalez

2.  Josuar Gonzalez SS.  DOB:  10/16/2007.  B-S, T-R.  6' 0", 167 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Dec.  2029.

2025(DSL):  .288/.404/.455, 10 2B, 5 3B, 4 HR, 33 SB, 16.2 BB%, 15.8 K%, 1.56 GB/FB.

Josuar Gonzalez was widely considered one of the top 2 or 3 prospects in the 2025 international signing period and he didn't disappoint.  He showed off excellent combination of contact and plate discipline with projectable power and game-changing speed.  The 33 SB's project to almost 90 over 600 PA's.  Comps to Jose Reyes put him in rarified air.  Has the tools to stick at shortstop.  He should start out 2026 in the ACL but if he does well there I would expect to see him in A San Jose by the end of the season a la Jhonny Level.  Seems more likely to be the Giants SS of the future while Luis Hernandez bat looks like it will play anywhere so I don't see harm in keeping both in the organization.  I am extremely excited by what the Giants are doing in the international market which is a big reason I think they are as well positioned for the future as any organization in baseball.

  1. Crossing my fingers that Gonzalez will develop into a good MLB player. I was excited to read his scouting report comparing him to a player I used to enjoy watchi play: Jose Reyes.

  2. surely a theoretical exercise, but if all 3 of those guys & Kilen wind up MLB Giants, who plays where?

    1. It sounds like Hernandez bat will play at almost any position and he has the athleticism to play CF. Gonzalez clearly has the speed and athleticism to play CF. So there are plenty of options for everybody to play and play with the Giants.

    2. I could imagine that Josar Gonzalez will end up being the SS of the future based on professional scouts still LOVING the glove at SS, and he's ahead of the other two.

I would place a gentlemen's bet that Luis Hernandez will slide over to 3B early on and see if that's a great fit. If not, then CF but great infielders aren't always built for the OF.

Johnny Level is defining my 2B choice for the future. Videos of his ABs night to night in SJ, his bat looked electric with gap power everywhere and another good Middle IF.

Agreed Doc, some really fun early results for the recent international classes!

  3. So happy and relieved that Buster&Co didn’t trade Josuar or any other blue chip prospects for expensive major leaguers who would likely amount to rental players for a year or two! The Giants seem to be adhering to a long term plan and are improving their overall organization from top to bottom. They seem to have overcome the pressure to add any massively overpriced free agents and plugged holes at a reasonable cost. Hoping their in house pitching can take the next step to supplement the back end of the rotation and that Walker regains his mojo. Closers are notoriously inconsistent and even the elite like Diaz and Hader have had entire down years, so hopefully Walker or someone else steps up and seizes the closer role.

  4. It would be really cool if by 2030 we had an infield made up of at the very least Gonzo, Hernandez, and Eldridge. If Level or Kilen are a part of it that’s great but either way those are some nice homegrown pieces. If they hit on the #4 pick in the upcoming draft that could be the young affordable core that we need to take the division from the Dodgers. It’s a long way away and so much could happen in between now and then but it does at least feel like the best wave of offensive prospects we have ever seen as Giants fans in the last 50 years!

    1. Just like you can never have enough pitching, you can never have enough up the middle prospect. I’d like to see the Giants draft Jacob Lombard at #4 but if Josuar is the heir apparent at SS and pushes Lombard to CF it seems like he has the tools to make that move.

    2. I like OF Burres at #4, looking at the early mocks and reports.

He seems like a very consistent bat, the rare protect with both high ceiling and high floor. The team is in need of another high profile OF bat that can go All-Star, and it does seem like the hitters in the draft are ahead of the pitchers this year.

      Cheers all!
