Spring Training Game Wrap 2/27/2024: Giants 10 Mariners 10

The Giants battled the Mariners to tie in another high-scoring game in Scottsdale.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee- 1 for 3.  In what the Giants hope is a preview of many games to come, Lee led off the Giants first inning with a single, hurried the shortstop into an error allowing Thairo Estrada to reach base then scored from 2B on a single by Lamonte Wade Jr.

Thairo Estrada 2B- 2 for 3,  BA= .375.

Patrick Bailey C- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .250.  Bailey's HR was a grand slam in the first inning from the left side of the plate.  Bailey hit much better from the left side than the right in the minors but reversed that at the MLB level.  Better offense from the left side by Bailey would go a long way toward making this year's team better than last.

Otto Lopez SS- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .286.  If the reserve SS role is open to performance-based competition, Otto Lopez has the early lead.

Ismael Munguia RF- 2 for 2.  BA= .750.  Is Munguia a sleeper in the system?

Jordan Hicks RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  Hicks pitched better than the line looks.  He gave up a soft IF single to leadoff hitter Dylan Moore and Mitch Garver followed with a 1-out 2-run HR.  Hicks sat in the upper 90's and hit 100 MPH.

Daulton Jeffries RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Seeing as how he has not pitched in a game since 2022, just completing 2 innings has to feel like a huge accomplishment.  Is Jeffries a dark horse for an Opening Day roster spot?  Maybe even the starting rotation?

In another uh-oh moment, Tristan Beck RHP was sent to San Francisco to have his painful hand evaluated.  Knock on wood it's not a serious problem and will improve with anti-inflammatories and a little rest.

  1. Hi Doc,

It seems to be that the prevailing theory in baseball is a pitcher has a fixed number of “bullets” before their arm gives out. What is your medical opinion on that theory? I have yet to see any data really showing it. Though I’m not sure how such an experiment or analysis could be done.

    Thanks,

    1. I am not sure that is the prevailing theory. It's my pet theory but I don't have any data to "prove" it. It's the theory behind why I am in favor of fast-tracking pitchers as long as they perform well at a given level. Why waste a finite number of pitches in the minor leagues where they really don't count?

    2. I don't think it's the same for every pitcher so comparative data would be hard to produce. I know most teams adhere to a "ramp up" policy where they try to avoid sudden jumps in IP from year to year. I am sure they have data to support that.

    3. My top 3 injury risks, without data, are: 1. History of injury. 2. Velocity over 95 MPH. 3. Age or innings pitched.

    5. I do remember a Fangraphs analysis long ago that a pitchers best years almost always comes in the first few years after being called up. So the longer the average pitcher pitches the worse they get.

Now that could be related to when the pitcher is called up or that a pitcher has a number of bullets and their arm wears down over time.

I read this over a decade ago so I could be wildly off.

    6. Lots of variance but on average I think this is correct.

  2. Good to see Munguia hitting and succeeding.after being hurt...That's what he does...he hits and he's a spark plug..and been around a bit...Who knows, maybe he gets his chance this year?...OTOH, surprising not to see any of Will Clark's boy VAUN BROWN or that guy Paomares..Hope Brown isn't hurt again

I wrote bout Beck and his injury in the other post...It's gonna be non-stop with Giant pitchers this year the way FZ has idiotically put together a starting rotation with pitchers that are question marks and need to be babyed..Well, unless he brings in Snell, Montgomery or Lorenzen....But CHAPMAN makes more sense, right?

  4. Hope Beck recovers well from his injury. It always scares me when I hear someone has an aneurysm. Too bad I wanted to see Beck get his chance in the rotation. He was sent up and down last year because they had veteran pitchers. I like what they're doing giving their young arms a chance but they could use 1 more veteran starting pitcher. They are reportidly back in on Snell. I hope Greg Johnson gives the ok to go all in on 1 more big signing
