DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #6 Keaton Winn

6.  Keaton Winn RHP.  DOB:  2/20/1998.  6' 4", 205 lbs.

2023(AAA):  0-6, 4.81, 58 IP, 10.24 K/9, 4.03 BB/9.
2023(MLB):  1-3, 4.68, 42.1 IP, 7.44 K/9, 1.70 BB/9, GB/FB= 1.97.

Winn keep his prospect status by sneaking in under the 50 MLB IP limit.  An impressive showing at the MLB level earns him a top 10 prospect status in DrB's list.  He has a devastating two pitch combo of a FB that averaged almost 96 MPH and an off-the-table splitter that goes about 88 MPH.  He has an average slider he doesn't throw often.  He might want to work on improving that pitch and using it more if he wants to remain a SP.

Projection systems have him improving his ERA slightly in 2024.  Unless FZ adds more than 1 SP, Winn appears to be almost a lock for the Opening Day rotation.  He is a TJ surgery survivor and was shut down for awhile last year due to elbow soreness so his biggest challenge may be to stay healthy.

  1. Product of the last pre-Zaidi draft along with Ryan Walker, Villar, Bart, and Hjelle who have graduated from Prospect status. Two others from that draft were traded away (Jake Wong and Jacob Lopez).
2018 might be the best Pre-FZ draft since Webb and Slater were picked in the 4th and 8th round of the 2014 draft.

  2. Looking forward to seeing the development of their young pitching led by Keaton Winn, Kyle Harrison, and Tristan Beck. If teams can develop their own good young controllable starting pitchers that's like striking gold based on the cost of pitching in the free agent and trade markets as the Giants are finding out. We will see what happens but as of now it's a little confusing as to what direction is the team going? If you're trying to win now, teams usually go with solid veteran pitching. If you're rebuilding, then young pitchers get more opportunities. Do the Giants have a good plan of action for 2024?

    1. I'm starting to suspect that it'll be the young pitchers getting a chance to start out of the gate alongside Webb and Hicks until Cobb bumps one and then Ray bumps another. And there's always an early season trade if things are bad... I am intrigued by the buzz around Soler and maybe Chapman -- I haven't been in on Chapman much but maybe batting 3-4 these two could change the whole dynamic. Lee-Estrada-Chapman-Soler-Flores-Bailey-Slater-Matos-Luciano against lefties? Wade, Yaz & Conforto in for Soler, Flores and Slater against righties? Get the young arms to go six and then bring on the lockdown bullpen.

    2. Replacing the innings of Woods, DeSclafani, Stripling, Junis, and Manea with the kids seems like a clear plan.
      Can't find gold without prospecting!
