Spring Training Game Wrap 2/29/2024: D'Backs 2 Giants 1

Jung Hoo Lee's HR in the third inning accounted for the Giants only run.  A throwing error by Marco Luciano SS led to an unearned run that was the difference in the game.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .500.  It's early but so far Lee has been everything the Giants and their fans could have dreamed possible.  Unfortunately other than Luis Matos there are not many other bright spots among players who hit baseballs for their roster spot.

Logan Webb RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, GO/AO= 7/0.  ERA= 5.40.  It's great to put the ball on the ground but then your fielders have to make the plays.

Tommy Romero RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.25.  Romero had a high walk rate in AAA last year in the Mariners(who else?) organization.  He may be another victim of the tight automated K zone.  He's made two appearances of 2 IP each.  He appears to be competing for a multi-inning relief role.

Ryan Walker RHP, Cody Stashak RHP and Carson Seymour RHP all pitched a scoreless inning each.

Kyle Harrison LHP makes his second spring start tomorrow in Scottsdale facing Adrian Sampson RHP of the Rangers.

The news on Tristan Beck RHP was about as bad as it gets.  Aneurysm in his right upper arm.  Yikes!  From the description of his symptoms, it sounds like the enlarged section of artery pressed on a nerve causing the pain and cold sensation in his hand.  He is now consulting with vascular surgeons at Stanford and weighing his options.  Pitchers have come back from this in the past but it seems likely he won't be able to start throwing again until mid-season at the earliest.

  1. Former Yankees pitcher David Cone recovered from the same condition back in 1994 that Beck has and went on to pitch 6 more years in MLB. Aneurysm is scary to hear so wishing Beck a full recovery, his baseball career is secondary.. As for the Giants needing pitching help, I'm skeptical of anything getting done with Snell or Montgomery. FZ doesn't like to sign pitchers to long term contracts, are ownership willing to authorize 1 more big signing. Hope I'm wrong . One of those pitchers would help stabilize the rotation.

  2. Entertaining comments by Crawford once he was gone! Bottom line nobody is upset they didn’t resign him except for Crawford but the way Zaidi handled it just looks bad. It’s really hard to trust anything FZ says or does and he isn’t very good at explaining himself even when he did the right thing although he did it the wrong way. I’m kind of astonished that this guy was chosen for the position he has and that he has lasted this long. Smart guy but no clue

    1. Giants were in free fall when FZ was signed.
It takes years to make up for the depleted system.
If you're a fan, you should be excited about the youngsters now emerging.
How good were the Giants in 2017?
Who from pre-Zaidi complemented the last hurrah of the Big 3 in 2021?
Where have the 2024 Giants come from?
Pre Zaidi players: Webb, Doval, and Rogers.
2024 lineup: Luciano is the only projected starter that precedes Zaidi, and he hasn't won the job yet.

    2. Craw should just enjoy the $32,000,000 Zaidi gave him for a few WAR points spread over 2 years and not whine about it.
      It's unprofessional.
It was time to retire gracefully and enjoy your family. He can certainly afford a box right behind the dugout and cheer his old (young) team on.
Somehow hanging on with a BA below the Mendoza line and looking in the field a step or 2 short isn't the best way to go out.
Be a family, you've given 15 years to professional baseball earning more than a hundred-million dollars -- what's another $2M?

    3. Matos is pre-Zaidi and is threatening to win a starting OF postion. IMO, the farm system is stronger now that at any time since the Posey/Bum/Crawford/Belt run and I think it's quite a bit deeper than even that era now. So yes, I agree Zaidi has done some good things.

    4. ...and Crawford should have kept it classy and not taken a shot at Giants current management, but there seems to be a general resentment for the Zaidi regime from the championship posse that I don't completely understand. Tim Flannery blisters them with regularity on his X account and he retired what, 2 years before they even arrived? So what is his beef?

  3. It's now pretty clear they should have signed Crawford not as an IF but as a pitcher. They needs innings from somebody. At least the Panda's in camp.

  4. Glad they were able to go from hand pain to bulging blood vessel on nerve
