Game Wrap 5/19/2021: Giants 4 Reds 0

Buster Posey's 3-run double in the top of the 9'th inning turned a 1-0 nail biter into a non-save appearance for the Giants new apparent Closer, Tyler Rogers.  Game Notes:

Buster Posey C was the hitting star with 3 hits and his hitting .374 on the season.

The Giants first run was produced by Mauricio Dubon SS's double to lead off the 5'th inning followed by an RBI single for Mike Tauchman LF.  Brandon Crawford SS go the day off against Wade Miley LHP.  Dubon is surely making it easier for Kap to give Crawford days off.  Dubon added a single in 4 AB's and made a sparkling defensive play.

Kevin Gausman RHP reportedly did not have his best stuff(I was working so did not see the game), but you sure can't tell from his pitching line:  6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 1.66.

After Zach Littell RHP worked a scoreless 7'th inning, Kap tipped his hand regarding the Closer situation by bringing Jake McGee LHP in to work the 8'th inning which would have set up Tyler Rogers RHP for the Save except Buster put the Save out of reach with his hitting heroics in the top of the 9'th.

The Win guarantees several things for the Giants:

Continued Best Record in MLB!
Continued first place in the NL West.
Series Win.
Winning record on road trip.

Johnny Cueto RHP tries for the 4-game sweeeeeeep tomorrow facing Tyler Mahle RHP.

  1. Any word on what's up with Belt? He's been out for several games.

    1. Tightness in his side that doesn't seem too bad but also doesn't seem to be getting better quickly.

  2. I’m convinced. I’m not convinced that the Giants can continue at this pace or even contend for the division championship, but I am convinced that Farhad has done an amazing job of picking up talent from the scrap yard. Yazstremski, Gausman, Wood, Donnie Barels.... He and his staff have demonstrated they can pick talent from that group of overlooked players. His next test will be the trade deadline when they will probably be buyers (closer?) and then this off season when he has his first big opportunity to make some noise in the free agent market. I like what he has done and am confident he can build a long term winning team.

    1. Folks on here were calling for his head after his FIRST OFFSEASON when he didn't put together a championship roster, with literally a roster FULL of mediocrity and totally dead momentum.

The guy is extremely intelligent, and his ability to be patient, wait for opportunities instead of buying guys or making trades so they can go .500 and "make the fans happy" is outstanding. He's the real deal, and you can tell that his methods are his own - whatever equations he's using to breakdown baseball into an intelligible scouting system - it's an awesome ride to be on.

FZ is the equivalent to what happened to the 49ers when Shanahan and Lynch came on board. Immediate turn around of the org, but it took multiple years to actually see the result.

  3. I’m convinced. I’m convinced Farhan and his staff can identify talent others have overlooked and build a team when the Farm System is a little bare. His next test will be the trading deadline when they will probably be buyers (closer?) and the the off season when he has his first big chance with free agency. I have confidence he has what it takes to build a long term winning team.

  4. The Giants do not need a closer specifically. They need quality bullpen DEPTH. The starting pitching has been beyond amazing, but the odds of that holding up this way all season is not realistic. A number of these guys have long histories of injuries mixed in with periods of ineffectiveness. I am not applying that logic to Gausman, he looks like the real deal. Once guys start to show that they are human again the bullpen needs to be strong enough to step in with guys that can pitch effective innings. The Giants middle relief is very underwhelming right now. Perhaps Tyler Beede is a guy that could come in and pitch multiple innings a couple of times a week once he is deemed healthy?

  5. As a follow up to my previous post......at the end of the game today 5-20

ERAs of the 4 relievers that pitched mop up duty during the 19 - 4 blow out: Selman 5.79 Doval 7.59 (electric stuff but its not translating to getting outs, 29 pitches in his one inning) Alvarez 5.56 Wisler 6.75 (good peripheral numbers but can't keep it in the park 4 HRs in 16 innings).

There have to be better pitchers out there that are available.
