Game Wrap 8/6/2020: Rockies 6 Giants 4

The Giants took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 7'th inning on Mauricio Dubon's 3-run HR but the bullpen melted down in the bottom of the inning and the Giants couldn't mount a comeback.  Key Lines:

Donovan Solano SS- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .465.  Donnie Barrels rolls on!  .400 watch in full swing!

Pablo Sandoval 1B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .212.  Sandoval had been struggling but rapped out a couple of hits in this one and scored ahead of Dubon's bomb.

Mauricio Dubon CF- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .276.  After going 0 for 10 in the first 3 games of the season, Dubon is 8 for 19 since.

Tyler Anderson LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 2.19.  A definite bright spot in this game.  Anderson may be auditioning for a longer contract from the Giants or he may be trade bait a the deadline.  Either way,  a very savvy pickup by FZ this offseason.

The Loss dropped the Giants record to 6-8 tied for 9'th place in the NL which would be out of the playoffs if the season ended today.

The Giants now go back to LA for the second series of the season in LA(how did that happen?).  Jeff Samardzija RHP starts Game 1 tomorrow evening against Julio Urias LHP in the first of a 3-gamer.

Steven Duggar OF and Andrew Suarez LHP were optioned to remote camp to get the roster down to 28 which is the roster size for the remainder of the season and through the postseason.

  1. Giants have young talented arms in the pen like Anderson, Garcia, Barager, Menez, but they are inexperienced and will have games like this. I was ok with Dubon showing exuberance at the Giants dugout after his 3 run dinger, but Daniel Murphy didn't like it and delivered payback, 2 run dinger of his own. Giants have played a lot of competitive games, now let's beat the Dodgers!

    1. I am fascinated by payback HR's or called HR's. They do seem to be a think, but we also don't know how may vowed paybacks and called HR's fail to materialize. Is a player more likely to hit a HR is he's trying hard to hit one? You also hear that HR's are more likely to happen when you are not trying for one. If a player is capable of hitting a payback HR, why aren't they up there trying to pay someone back every AB?

Just an interesting concept to me.

  2. Of the Giants 14 games, there is only ONE in which Pablo Sandoval didn't appear: Friday July 31 SF beat Texas 9-2.
The much beloved "Panda" has 38 PAs, playing 1B or appearing as a DH or PH, uses normally associated with power BUT he has NO extra base hits.
His Slugging Pct is the same as his batting average - .212, and batting against RHP - the reason he's on the roster - his BA/SLG is .179! He has ONE RBI.
His oWAR and dWAR are both negative.
He IS doing better than similarly loved Hunter Pence (1 hit in 31 PAs), but seriously, Farhan, this is a big fat flop - own it!

  3. Of course, Ruf, Tromp, and Dubon made it Oh well, might as well let Pence hit!
Note to Gabe: Pence is toast. Yesterday's.
