Game Wrap 8/12/2020: Astros 5 Giants 1

One bad inning ruined the Giants chances of finishing a brutal 10 game road trip on a winning note as they failed to score after taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski CF- 3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .314.  YtY led off the game with a triple and scored on Alex Dickerson's single.  Alas, that was the last of the Giants scoring on the day.

Trevor Cahill RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Cahill got called up before the game with Andrew Triggs RHP getting the DFA to make room on the 40-man roster.  Cahill missed time due to a fingernail issue but is apparently healthy now.  He is the type of versatile pitcher who can fill many roles that FZ and Gabe Kapler seem to love.  Hard to know if he was a Starter or an Opener in this one or if this was just a bullpen game at the end of a loooong road trip which made up 16.7% of their total games for the season.

The Loss dropped the Giants record to 8-12 tied for the third worst record in the NL and 4.0 games behind in the playoff race.  The good news is they are coming off the toughest stretch of the season, although the NL West draw is probably the toughest in baseball and there aren't really any easy stretches.

The Giants get a much needed day off before starting a 3-game series against the red hot Oakland A's Friday Night with Johnny Cueto RHP facing Frankie Montas RHP.

The Giants made two other pitching moves optioning Conner Menez LHP and Rico Garcia RHP to remote camp to make room for Trevor Cahill RHP and Dereck Rodriguez RHP on the 28-man active roster.

  1. Since the opening series, the Giants have lost the final game of every series — 5 — and, in 4 of them, winning the last game would have won or tied the series. With Texas, it would have been a sweep.
Continuing last year's oddity, this bad team is 5-1 in 1-run games.
This blowout loss may end the Baragar experiment.

  2. The A's are good but are they good enough to take on the Yankees?
How about a deal like the Will Wilson Angel trade:
Take Kris Davis contract, big by Oakland standards, $16.75M in 2021 and he'll never see 20 HRs again, and Robert Puason for anyone on the Giants roster over 30 with scholarship if necessary.
The break for the A's is the cash and a player or 2 like Solano or Dickerson or Watson or Smiley or any legacy player with something left in the tank.
For the A's, the Yankees are in the way. Neither Davis or Puason is going to get them past but the Giants could help without jeopardizing 2022 and beyond.
    Farhan could get it done.

    1. I doubt the A's would trade Kris Davis straight up for any of the Giants players, even to dump his salary. Robert Puason is an untouchable prospect.

    2. Yeah, and what 30+ Giant(s) would the A's want! They have some holes in addition to their DH that won't hurt them in the AL West but will bite them against the Yankees and at least, the Twins. Perhaps TB, too.
If the Giants took Davis payroll, gave up Yaz who would be a primo asset fitting into their OF/DH and a useful SP (several choices), who knows what they could pry loose.
What if Cueto pitches 5 or 6 good innings tonight? With up to half his future salary paid, he could help a lot.

    3. Hope you are having fun with these scenarios because none of them are going to come close to happening.
