The Giants took advantage of a blizzard of free bases given by D'Backs pitchers to back the complete game pitching of Tyler Anderson. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 0 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .311. YtY has a 17% walk rate which is probably the main reason he still leads Fernando Tatis in fWAR 2.1 to 2.0. Defensive plays like a great catch at an archway in the 6'th inning help too.
Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4. BA= .237. Belt is hitting .450 over his last 7 games. Is it just me or is he looking a little less awkward at the plate? Are Giants hitting coaches getting through to him?
Joey Bart PH/C- 1 for 1, 2B, HBP. BA= .375. Bart did not start but came up as a PH in the 7'th with a runner on 1B. He smoked a ball that looked like it was gone but hit the padding at the top of the fence in front of a bullpen. Yeah, Bart looks like the real deal at the plate. All 3 of his hits have been doubles and all 3 have been roasted.
Tyler Anderson LHP- 9 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.45. This is the Tyler Anderson everybody thought he might become when he was the 20'th overall draft pick in 2011. Pitch to soft contact, keep hitters off balance, keep low pitch counts, get deep into games. He seemed to fall victim to the Coors Field curse. The Giants are being patient with him(maybe out of necessity). I believe they control his contract(via arbitration) for one more season.

The Win was the Giants 5'th in a row and improved their record to 13-16. They now trail in the Wild Card Race by just 2 games.

Trevor Cahill RHP goes for the sweep today facing Luke Weaver RHP.
Call me a bad fan - but I really hope we don't win enough games before the TDL that we don't make any trades for the future.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that we are playing well against bad teams, but this squad isn't a contender. Please trade some of the SPs (Smiley, Gausman, Cueto) if we can get any kind of prospect return.
I think if they have a shot, they should go for it. While the farm system could probably stand to add a few more arms, it is in quite good shape overall so it's not like the farm system is in desperate need or anything.
DeleteI made this same argument last year and keeping Bum/Smith burned us IMO. Should have been able to get better prospects then what we ended up with in the draft
DeleteI do not really see anyone who can bring a big return in a trade. There are several tradable players, but I don't think anyone will bring a top-ten (for Giants) prospect in return. Maybe if they take a salary dump as well.
DeleteI also wonder how the new minor league system with fewer teams will affect the farm. We already have good depth in the lower minors. One year is lost, which means there will not be much room for prospects. Even those in the top 30 will have to compete for regular playing time.
DeleteI think they did better with the draft picks for Bum and Smith. Fans almost always overvalue players from the team they root for. Bum/Smith would not have brought back much in return.
DeleteIF the Giants win today they will jump the D'Backs and the Mets (idle) and be a Wild Card.
ReplyDeleteIF the Rox lose to the Dodgers, it will be 7 L's in a row, and SF will jump them also, and be the 7th team in the NL, all by percentage points.
IF the Giants don't faceplant at home against the Dodgers as they did last weekend (against another good team, the A's), they will be "IN IT" and most likely NOT sellers.
2018 redux.
BUT what IF someone makes an offer they can't refuse for Cueto?
A final thought from Baseball Reference today:
Giants Playoff Odds: 35.5% to make postseason, 1.1% to win World Series.
Postseason odds are quite good and we all know what can happen once they are in.
DeleteSad but inevitable, Hunter departs. His pair of HRs didn't save him.
ReplyDeleteSandoval survives to play another game despite rational explanation. Cause he bats LH?
Against RHP, he's .170/.216/.255/.471
Solano against RHP: .387/.426/.548/.975
It is commonly attributed to Yogi Berra: “It is dangerous to make forecasts, especially about the future.”

Woo hoo, who saw this coming!
