It was deja vu all over again at Oracle Park as Trevor Gott gave up a solo HR followed by a 3-run blast by, you guessed it, Mark Canha, to turn a 6-3 lead into a 7-6 in the 9'th inning. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski CF/LF- 1 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .304. YtY drove in 2 runs with a triple then scored a third on a throwing error within the same play in the 4'th inning to give the Giants their first lead, 3-2.
Darin Ruf LF- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .281. The Giants acquired Darin Ruf to hit home runs. He was hitting, but all singles with just one double before unloading for a 3-run blast in the 7'th inning to give the Giants a 6-3 lead they would hold until the fateful 9'th inning.
Kevin Gausman RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 11 K. ERA= 4.21. Gausman featured a mid-90's FB with a wipeout split. He now has 34 K's and just 5 BB's in 25.2 IP. So far, the ERA does not reflect that level of dominance which you may recall is a career trend.
Trevor Gott RHP- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 12.86. Kap had not choice but to send Gott back out there for the Save opportunity if he wanted to salvage his Closer. It obviously didn't work out. At this point, I think Kap has to pull him out of high leverage situations until he shows he can get out of an inning then gradually work him back. Brutal!

The Loss drops the Giants deeper into last place in the NL West with an 8-14 record, still 14'th out of 15 NL teams.

The Giants send Logan Webb RHP out tomorrow to try to salvage a win in the 3-game series agains Mike Fiers RHP. How brutal is it that they are staring at a sweep after leading the first two games by 5 and 3 runs going to the 9'th innings?
Never been impressed with Kapler's game management skills - not in Philly and now - not in San Francisco. Brutal is correct. Brutal, devastating, frustrating, debilitating - Aghhh. APGiantsfan I am jumping on the time to dump Kapler bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteGive A's credit for doing what hot teams do. Angels announcers said A's have been making 9th inning comebacks all season. As for Giants:
ReplyDelete-they'tw rebuilding. Want to see team show gradual improvement led by younger players like Yaz, Solano, Slater establishing themselves as major league regulars.
Kapler- I'm ok with Kap for now. Hope he and his inexperienced coaching staff grow into their jobs in the next 2 seasons. If they had hired Joe Espada Astros 3rd base coach the other finalist, it would have been a mistake due to cheating scandal.
Zaidi-high profile GMs didn't want Giants job after Bobby Evans was fired. Still think he had team going in right direction rebuilding. One reason Bryce Harper gave for not signing with Giants is core players getting older.. gotta develop new core..
Joey Bart- like to see him up, but understand why he's still in training camp due to few game reps above double A.
I agree with most or even all of that, LG. Too early to give up on FZ and Kap, but Kap especially needs to be learning from his mistakes and showing improvement in his game managing.
DeleteEvans model was to spend money in the short term to maintain competiveness while building the farm system. Unfortunately for him(and us) the short term spending turned out less than competitive teams due to unexpectedly rapid aging of the core and injuries. I believe ownership simply looked and the spending and the immediate results while ignoring the improvement in the farm system when they made their decisions.
Unfortunately, Donovan Solano will be 33 late this year and
ReplyDeleteMike Yastrzemski will be 30 next week.
By the time the hopefully well-stocked farm churns out the next Sandoval-Posey-Belt-Crawford-Bumgarner-Cain-et al, Yaz and Solano will be today's Pence and Panda.
Seemingly, whatever "Kap" does do well, he doesn't seem to have "feel" for the game. What was Yaz doing in left field in the 9th inning last night? Watching Pence fumble the game ala Flores the night before!
Dubon may work out to be an everyday player but he's not Crawford. OK, it may work to hide a Burrell or a Morse or a Pence in LF, but this is the worst fielding Giant team EVER! Do you really need hitters in the 9th inning with big leads?
Solano being 33 and a red-hot hitter could be good deadline trade bait, along with Cueto and Gausman. Sandoval should be gone and Yolmer Sanchez the gold glove should take his place on the roster as at least a late-innings 2B with the lead.
