Game Wrap 6/5/2018: D'Backs 3 Giants 2

Madison Bumgarner threw a Quality Start but the offense scuffled against Patrick Corbin to spoil Bummy's return from the DL.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez- 0 for 4.  BA= .285.  The magic wandu may have run out for Gorkys as he is just 3 for 25 over his 7 games.

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .322.  Mac Williamson and Brandon Crawford hit B2B doubles in the 5'th inning with Crawford driving in the first Giants run of the game.

Alen Hanson PH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .333.  Hanson hit is second PH double in as many nights with 1 out in the 9'th inning and scored on Buster Posey's 2-out single, but it was too little, too late.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.  I only saw a couple of innings, but Bummy did not look too sharp.  Still, a subpar game by Bummy is usually better than the alternative.

Hunter Strickland RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.33.  The unearned run Strick gave up to extend the D'Backs lead to 3-1 eventually proved to be the difference in the game.

The D'Backs, Rockies and Dodgers all won while the Giants and Padres lost.  The D'Backs lead the NL West by 1 game over the Rockies, 2 games over the Dodgers, 2.5 games over the Giants and 5.5 games over the Padres.

Chris Stratton tries for a series win today in the finale, facing Clay Buchholz.

  1. I think Gorky's is actually in a 3 for 27 rut, the ARZ broadcast announced him in a 3 for 25 streak before he got 2 more outs -> ouch. I'm surprised Jackson hasn't at least got a spot start vs a lefty, I know Gorky's was red hot but Jackson very quietly had a productive May with a .429 OBP in 46 ABs. I know people gave up on him, but he was finally doing something. That SO with the bases loaded was killer.

  2. Hernández did manage to take an 0-2 count to a walk in the 7th to load the bases with 2 outs. To be fair, his K in the 5th was sandwiched between 2 other Ks by Corbin who had loaded the bases with no outs then struck out the side including Bumgarner, Hernández, and Posey.
Hunter Pence is the only Giant with really good numbers against Corbin, including 4 HRs, 4 2Bs, and a triple, slashing .395/.452/.868 in 38 ABs.
McCutchen was 2-14 against Corbin coming into the game with no XBHs.
That would have been a good game for Bochy to follow his own advice (see comments yesterday after Mondays game) about rotating Pence, Williamson, and McCutchen, as well as Jackson/Hernández and playing the "hot hand"! Both CFers were 3-12 against Corbin but Jackson the hotter hitter lately (7-19) with Hernández scuffling (3-25).

  3. Today's game apparently is only on Facebook. Last time I had no success with this.
Anyone know why the Giants are doing this?
Or is the answer obvious: $$$ from somewhere?
