Yusmeiro Petit had another subpar pitching performance as the Giants fell behind Team Japan 4-1 after 4 innings, and were never able to catch up. Key Lines:
Francisco Peguero- 1 for 2, SF. Peguero drove in 2 of the Giants 3 runs. He continues to press his case for a roster spot while his main rival, Cole Gillespie rang up an 0 for 4.
Gary Brown- 1 for 1, HR. Brownie gets his chance to show off for the brass. It is remarkable how many Giants prospects have gotten a chance to show what they can do and have made the most of the opportunity.
Kensuke Tanaka- 1 for 3, E. Familiar story with Tanaka. Gotta be able to field a position to make the team.
Scott Proctor, Dan Runzler and Ramon Ramirez- 1 scoreless IP each.

So we can likely scratch Petit, Pill and Tanaka from the opening day roster. Looks like Valdez and Gaudin have the inside tracks right now. It'll be interesting to see what happens if Sanchez can't go by opening day. Seems like Quiroz was the insurance policy. Monell isn't up to snuff defensively. I would still like to see Pegs make the outfield. Too early for this kind of rosterbation?
ReplyDeleteSince it's looking more and more like Hector won't be healthy enough to start the season, the Giants are going to have to make a move to add one of the catchers to the 40-man. Assuming Gaudin is almost a lock to take the Mota spot in the bullpen, he would have to be added as well, which means the Giants are going to be over the limit and other non-roster options such as Gillespie and Valdez won't be viable unless someone else (Rosario and Otero seem the most logical) gets waived.
DeleteWith the way Pegs has been playing, it almost seems possible that he could be claimimg the job in left outright to start the year, with both Blanco and Torres as nice late inning options off the bench.
Hatchet day in camp clarifies things. Baggs seems to think Tanaka is being kept in camp as a courtesy and doesn't have a shot at the 25. Could a last minute phone call to The Riot be coming? Valdez or Abreu don't exactly excite the same way The Riot did last year, but I guess they're easily replaceable as well. Frankie Peggs is getting a good chance for sure! He's outplaying Gillespie, and its down to those two. Gaudin has to almost have one spot wrapped because of his long man skills. Hey how'd it get to be the 15th already? Opening day at Doyer stadium is coming quick now!
ReplyDeleteAs long as they are good, they will all get a chance to contribute some time during the season, if they don't make the initial 25. This goes for all teams. Maybe Fresno will give Tanaka more time to adjust. Bochy's statement about him (or anyone making it as a backup infielder) needing to be able to play ss still puzzles.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, you always like to see one or two kids break in every year.
ReplyDeleteAll things being equal, I would like to see a couple from Peguero, Dunning, Kieschnick or Runzler make it, though only the first and the last named above survived today's massive sequestration.
Kleschnick went down today, so it won't be him. Runzler is still in play as is Pegs. I personally would like to see Pegs make the team and have Bochy do the same thing he did with Belt last year. Ease him and then over time he starts. If Pence is the real deal, we could have a great outfield next year with more average if not the same power as last year (which I don't think most would have expected).
ReplyDeleteDo we have spots on the 40? I wouldn't want to cut anyone unless we needed to. I think Cole is out at this point for my boy Pegs. Not sure about pitching though.
Can't wait for the season to start.

I've got 4 players who could potentially be dropped from the 40 man: Petit, Machi, Abreu and Pill.
DeleteI think Pill has enough trade value that I doubt the waive/DFA him. Petit, Machi and Abreu, not so much.
