AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 7-3:
Adam Duvall(1B)- 3 for 4, 3 HR(20). BA= .267.
Duvall made an adjustment in his footwork in the batters box and went off in this game. Still has a long term problem with contact issues and where he is going to play in the field.
*********************************************************************************
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Trenton Thunder 5-4:
Myles Schroder(LF)- 3 for 5, HR(5). BA= .270.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .273.
Austin Slater(2B)- 2 for 4. BA= .286.
Jackson Williams(Catcher)- 3 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .229.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.10.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.60.
Giants are going to stretch Gregorio out and try him back in the rotation. He remains one of the higher ceilinged pitching prospects in the organization.
*********************************************************************************
High A San Jose Giants blanked the Modesto Nuts 2-0:
Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .286.
Chase Johnson(RHP)- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.01.
Chase Johnson doesn't get a lot of attention, but he's thrown his share of dominant starts in the Cal League and has shown a lot more stamina than he has in prior seasons. I think he would qualify as a sleeper.
*********************************************************************************
Low A Rome Braves outlasted the Augusta Greenjackets 5-3 in 10 innings:
Johneshwy Fargas(CF)- 2 for 5, 3 SB(43). BA= .291.
Jonah Arenado(3B-1B)- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .260.
Ryan Jones(2B)- 3 for 4, BB. BA= .219.
Mark Reyes(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 1.66.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.72.
*********************************************************************************
Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Vancouver Canadians 4-2:
Ronnie Jebavy(CF)- 2 for 5. BA= .258.
Steven Duggar(RF)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .244.
Jose Vizcaino, Jr(3B)- 3 for 4, 3B. BA= .364.
Richard Amion(2B)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .247.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.57.
Cory Taylor(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.53.
Ryan Halstead(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(3). ERA= 0.00.
.364 is obviously not sustainable, but love what Vizcaino, Jr is doing in his pro debut.
*********************************************************************************
Rookie AZL Giants outscored the Rangers 7-6:
Kelvin Beltre(2B)- 2 for 4, HR(1), HBP. BA= .267.
Mark Wiest(3B)- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .308.
Scott Price(DH)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .667.
Byron Murray(LF)- 2 for 5, 3B. BA= .284.
Jordan Johnson(RHP)- 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.93.
Giants have solved the problem of PT for Miller and Beltre for now by moving Beltre to 2B. Is it just me, or do the Giants have a lot of Johnson's pitching in their minor league system?
*********************************************************************************
DSL Giants pounded the Twins 14-6:
Beicker Mendoza(RF, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .299.
Mecky Coronado(LF, 18 yo)- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA= .394.
Francisco Medina(3B, 17 yo)- 1 for 5, HR(7). BA= .235.
Jose Rivero(SS, 17 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .191.
Jose Patino(CF, 17 yo)- 1 for 2, BB, SF, 2 SB(15). BA= .252.
Luis Amaya(LHP, 16 yo)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K. ERA= 0.84.
What is the DSL single season HR record for Giants prospects? 9? I think that was by a 19 or 20 year old. The BA could stand to be higher, but Medina is showing impressive power for a 17 yo prospect. As we have said before, he is doing it with an athletic frame that has room to fill out, too.

Game Wrap 7/11/2015: Giants 8 Phillies 5
The Giants torched the Phillies bullpen after a curious decision by their manager, for a come-from-behind win. Key Lines:
Angel Pagan- 1 for 5, 2B. BA= .265. Not the most impressive looking line, but the double came in the middle of the Giants 6'th inning rally and was pulled smartly down the RF line from the left side of the plate, a vintage Pagan swing that we have not been seeing for awhile.
Matt Duffy- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B. BA= .298. Another almost cycle for Duffy who has the 6'th highest fWAR of all MLB third basemen at 2.6.
Buster Posey- 3 for 5. BA= .308. 2 of Buster's hits were groundball bleeders that never got completely out of the IF. I think he will take them. He looked a bit better running down to 1B, but is still obviously protecting the hammy.
Hunter Pence- 0 for 5. BA= .273. Not a good line, but at least 2 of the outs were on hard hit line drives that went right at fielders.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .279. Belt's BA is on the rise again and he continues to play a mean defensive 3B. The value of Belt's D was illustrated by contrast when Ryan Howard booted a ground ball in the 7'th by Adrianza that allowed an additional run to score. In Howard's defense, the ball did take a funny hop and the baserunner was kind of in the way, so it was not a slam dunk that Belt would have made the play. Howard did get charged with the E though.
Brandon Crawford- 3 for 4, 3B. BA= .262. Crawford has kind of short, thick legs and a rather plodding gait that is faster than it looks. He looks funny running out triples, but there is nothing funny about the way he drives balls into gaps.
Gregor Blanco- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .313. Didn't Blanco bunt for a basehit the other night? Kruk or Kuip mentioned that he needs to do that more often. One of his hits in this game was a drag bunt that hugged the chalk down the 1B line, hit a pebble that had been disrupted by a previous baserunner which kicked it onto the grass on the fair side of the line. The ball came to a complete stop before anyone could pick it up and Blanco beat it out with no play at 1B. He also made several nice catches in LF.
Ryan Vogelsong- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.23. Vogey kind of dodged trouble until the 6'th inning when he gave up 2 dingers and the Phillies took a 4-1 lead. Fortunately for him and the Giants, the Phillies manager decided he was not going to take the chance that his starter would do the same thing.
Pete Mackanin(Phillies Interim Manager)- Phillies SP David Buchanan had scattered hits and stranded baserunners all game, but had thrown just 72 pitches and was sitting with a 4-1 lead going to the bottom of the 6'th inning. Maybe Mackanin is following the trend of pulling SP's after going through the lineup 2 times or maybe he was spooked by the 3 LH batters the Giants had coming up in the 6'th. For whatever reason, he did not let Buchanan come out for the 6'th inning, replacing him with LHP Jake Diekman. After Belt grounded out, Crawford singled and Blanco reached on his bunt single. When Maxwell was announced as the PH for Osich, Mackanin pulled Diekman for a RHP. Maxwell made the second out, but Pagan followed with his double into the RF corner and the comeback was on.
The Win cut the Giants deficit in the NL West to 4.5 games as the Dodgers lost to the BrewCrew 7-1. The Giants also now trail in the Wild Card race by 2 games after the Cubs lost to the crosstown rival ChiSox.
Chris Heston tries to close out the official first half with a series sweep today facing former Dodger Chad Billingsly trying to come back from a series of injuries including TJ surgery.

The whole S-K team has taken on a juggernaut feel. I am really getting excited about Vizcaino's future. He sure looked good in scouting videos to me! Gomez seems to be opening some eyes to his possibilities too.

Game Wrap 7/10/2015: Giants 15 Phillies 2
On Pence on the Fence night, Hunter Pence hit an opposite field grand slam HR to cap an 8 run 4'th inning against Cole Hamels and lead a 22 hit Giants attack for a runaway win. Key Lines:
Angel Pagan- 3 for 6, 2B. BA= .266. Bochy expressed some concern before the game about Pagan's health. I'm not sure if Bochy's intent was to light a fire under him, or if the day off gave him a chance to heal some of the bruises, but Pagan looked healthier in this game and even had a bit of drive on a ball in the gap on the 2B.
Joe Panik- 4 for 6, HR(7). BA= .313. Panik had been in a 3 for 20 slump, but hit the ball with authority in this game against one of the better LHP's in the game.
Matt Duffy- 4 for 6. BA= .292. Duffy had been scuffling a bit too. A day off at home can do wonders for a tired player! No XBH's from Duff, but his AB's may have done more to unravel Hamels than any of the big blows as Duffy just refused to let strike 3 go by and did not swing and miss either. He just kept fouling off pitches until he got one he could handle and then just punched it up the middle. Backbreakers! And Matt Duffy! Oh, and the first 3 batters in the lineup went a combined 11 for 18!
Buster Posey- 2 for 4. BA= .303. Buster is obviously nursing a sore hammy. It wasn't a good look when he basically jogged to 1B on a GIDP in the first inning, but he came through with basehits later in the game and came out after the route was on. He maybe should only play an inning or 2 at the most in the ASG.
Hunter Pence- 1 for 4, HR(3). BA= .289. AT&T does not give up many opposite field HR's to right, but Pence did it with the bases loaded in the 4'th to finish off Cole Hamels' night. The Pence-on-the-Fence dolls went nuts! And how much does having Pence back mean for the rest of the season?
Brandon Belt- 2 for 3, 2 2B, 2 BB. BA= .275. Again, Belt looked like he was seeing the ball well against a good LHP. He drew a couple of tough walks in addition to the XBH's.
Justin Maxwell- 4 for 4, 2 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .218. Maxwell had been struggling mightily. Barry Bonds has apparently been giving him some hitting advice. Bonds stopped by for batting practice and pronounced the swing fixed. Guess he was right as Mad Max had a huge night out of the 8-hole.
Madison Bumgarner- 2 for 3. BA= .256. Bumgarner's first AB was with 1 out and runners on first and second. He showed no sign of having any intention of bunting and struck out with a couple of very weak swings. He apparently used the AB to figure out Hamels, though, because he singled in his next chance and added another later.
Madison Bumgarner- 5.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.33. Bummy held up his end of the pitching matchup, but once again we saw him spend a long time on the basepaths and then not look sharp in the next half inning which resulted in an inflated pitch count and an early exit, although he did hang around long enough for the W.
The Win enabled the Giants to remain 5.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West after the Bad Guys came from behind to top the BrewCrew 3-2. The Giants deficit in the Wild Card Race was cut to 3 games.
Ryan Vogelsong takes the mound against David Buchanan this evening in game 2 of the weekend series.
Angel Pagan- 3 for 6, 2B. BA= .266. Bochy expressed some concern before the game about Pagan's health. Thoughts on the 2005 Draft
The 2005 MLB Amateur draft is by now legendary for producing more superstars than any other draft in recent memory. In terms of talent production, I am not sure if it ranks #1 in the history of the draft, but it has to be top 3. I don't think any draft since has been productive. What rankles many Giants fans is that their team had no first round picks in that draft. In fact, they had no 2'nd or 3'rd round picks either. Brian Sabean and Giants ownership was desperately trying to win one for Barry and their top 3 picks in the 2005 draft were sacrificed for dubious veteran FA's who ultimately failed to deliver on the dream of a championship in the Barry Bonds era.
I have to say that I have mostly tried to ignore articles about the 2005 draft. First of all, I figure they are too painful to read and secondly, the Giants have won 3 championships since then, so it's all water under the bridge anyway. This year marks the 10'th anniversary of that legendary draft and a flurry of articles looking back at it are out there for reading. A few days ago, I reluctantly clicked on one such article about how the 2005 draft would go if you redrafted it knowing what you know about the players now. As I scrolled down the list of superstars, Andrew McCutchen, Troy Tulowitzki, Justin Upton and many more, I got more and more disgusted, until I came to #23 and the name was Sergio Romo. Wait, what? Sergio Romo would be the #23 pick in the legendary, stupendous 2005 draft if it was held today? There are 30 picks in the first round, right? That means that at least one author thinks the Giants got first round value in that draft and then some! That is not exactly the disaster we've been led to believe all these years.
That got me to thinking about where the Giants would have drafted in the first round had they owned a selection and what players they might have gotten. First, I looked up the final 2004 MLB Standings which determine draft order. The Giants tied with the A's for the 9'th best record in baseball which means they would have drafted either #21 or #22. Well, that would put them out of the running for the big names I mentioned above. Next, I looked up BA's Draft Database for 2005. Here is a list of 2005 first round draft picks in order of career fWAR up to this point, along with their draft position:
1. Andrew McCutchen, 11'th pick, 37.8.
2. Troy Tulowitzki, 7'th pick, 34.4.
3. Ryan Braun, 5'th pick, 34.1.
4. Ryan Zimmerman, 4'th pick, 33.4.
5. Alex Gordon, 2'nd pick, 29.9.
6. Jacoby Ellsbury, 23'rd pick, 28.8.
7. Justin Upton, 1'st pick, 24.9.
8. Matt Garza, 25'th pick, 20.7.
9. Jay Bruce, 12'th pick, 17.8.
10. Colby Rasmus, 28'th pick, 15.4.
11. Mike Pelfrey, 9'th pick, 11.5.
12. Cameron Maybin, 10'th pick, 9.4.
13. Cliff Pennington, 21'st pick, 8.5.
14. Ricky Romero, 6'th pick, 8.2.
15. Chris Volstad, 16'th pick, 3.1.
16. Brian Bogusovic, 24'th pick, 2.9.
17. John Mayberry, Jr, 19'th pick, 2.3.
18. Joey Devine, 27'th pick, 1.5.
All other first round picks including #4 Jeff Clement either failed to play in any MLB games or generated 0 fWAR or less in their careers. BTW, if you generate a negative WAR for your career, would it be better if you had never played? Now THAT is harsh!
Now, Sergio Romo is the only player the Giants drafted in 2005 who made it to the major leagues. He has a 7.8 cumulative fWAR to his name so far. There were just 14 first round picks from the 2005 draft who have earned a higher cumulative fWAR. There are 3 or 4 other players drafted in later rounds who have earned more than Romo's 7.8, but that only pushes him down to #23 or so. Since the Giants would have drafted at #21 or #22, getting the 23'rd highest value in the draft is pretty much what they should have gotten had they kept the pick and a lot better than what a lot of teams got. Most of those superstars on this list would have been long gone by the time the Giants drafted anyway.
I'll take it a step further here. Just looking at that list, I can find more than 1 player with a higher career fWAR who I might not prefer to Sergio Romo. As we have discussed many times, fWAR probably undervalues relievers due to leverage issues. For instance, I am not at all sure I would prefer Matt Garza, who has the 8'th highest fWAR in the first round to Romo and I am quite sure I would not prefer Ricky Romero or Colby Rasmus. I would probably take Romo over Pennington, Maybin, and Pelfrey too. So, I think there is a good case that Romo has been more valuable than all but 8 or 9 first round picks!
Now, could the Giants have gotten a good or even great player in the first round which would have no bearing on whether they picked Romo in round 30-something? Yes, that is true. The two who stand out who were drafted at or after picks #21 and 22 are Jacoby Ellsbury and Matt Garza and yeah, it would have been nice to have either of those players plus Romo, but do we know the Giants would have taken one of those two players had they kept the pick? Chances are, they would have taken one of the many other players who failed to register an fWAR at all!
In summary, while it is debatable whether the Giants and Brian Sabean should have signed all those free agents and punted the first 3 picks of the 2005 draft, but it is wrong to think that they would almost certainly have done better in the draft had they not. As it stands, the Giants got mid-first round value out of the 2005 draft and a key contributor to 3 championship teams.

Down on the Farm: 7/9/2015
AAA Sacramento River Cats outlasted the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4 in 13 innings:
Kelby Tomlinson(3B)- 2 for 6, SB(3). BA= .328.
Adam Duvall(1B)- 1 for 3, HR(17). BA= .261.
Kevin Frandsen(1B)- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .305.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.07.
Tomlinson played 3B in what could be a prep for a MLB utility role. Not sure why Duvall left the game early.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-1:
Myles Schroder(1B)- 2 for 5. BA= .267.
Austin Slater(2B)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .286.
Jesus Galindo(RF)- 2 for 4, SB(1). BA= .292.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 9/3. ERA= 3.83.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.17.
Is Myles Schroder trying to play 9 different positions in 9 games? He's almost halfway there as I believe 1B is his 4'th position in 4 games. Lujan is on fire! In his last 3 starts, he threw 3 perfect innings, then took a no-hitter into the 7'th inning and now this start. 16.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 11 K's.

High A San Jose Giants extinguished the Bakersfield Blaze 3-0:
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 1 for 2, 2 HBP. BA= .330.

Mac Marshall(LHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 9.00.
Webb is still just 18 yo(DOB= 11/18/1996). His line over his last 3 starts is 3-0, 1.68, 16 IP, 3 BB, 10 K. Marshall may have had the jitters in his first inning at the new level as he allowed a 3-run dinger, but then settled down and was dominant the rest of the way.

Grant Watson(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Michael Santos makes his long-awaited 2015 debut. Good to see Stetson Woods get back on his horse after being throwed in his last appearance. Suarez and Watson are probably too advanced for Rookie ball.
