Down on the Farm: 6/2//2011

AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox pummeled the Fresno Grizzlies 9-3:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .284.
Thomas Neal(LF)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .375.
Waldis Joaquin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.59.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Bowie Baysox 4-0:

Charlie Culberson(DH)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .278.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .233.
Jose Flores(3B)- 3 for 4, SB(4). BA= .190.
Ryan Verdugo(LHP)- 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 2.50.

A dominant start for Verdugo. The Giants have 3 interesting LH starters at Richmond: Surkamp, Tanner and Verdugo. Of the 3, I believe Verdugo has the highest velocity so he may have the highest ceiling.

A+ Visalia Rawhide outslugged the San Jose Giants 12-8:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 4, 2 BB, SB(31). BA= .364.
Hector Sanchez(DH)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .295.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 2 for 4, HR(5). BA= .256.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 1 for 4, HR(6), BB. BA= .273.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 3 for 5. BA= .222.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.84.
Ari Ronick(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.80.

Brown has drawn a solid number of walks despite maintaining a BA>.350. Heston had pitched pretty well before this game as evidenced by his ERA still being <4.

Low A Asheville Tourists topped the Augusta Greenjackets 4-3:

Jeff Arnold(C)- 1 for 4, HR(3). BA= .207.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .192.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.67.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.92.

I'm still really high on Seth Rosin. In his last 3 appearances, he has 9 K's and 2 BB's in 6.1 IP. His usage has been a bit strange as he's worked both as a starter and reliever.

DSL Giants Crushed the Mets1 10-1:

Franklin Matamoros(3B, 17 yo)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .417.
Reyes Maronta(RHP, 18 yo)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.

DSL box scores are very hard to decipher. There tend to be lots of walks, lots of errors and a wide range of ages. In general, any player over the age of 18 is not a true prospect. In this game, a big contribution to the score was the 7 errors committed by the Mets1 team, part of why the lines for the Giants players were not that impressive despite the team scoring 10 runs.

Game Wrap 6/2/2011: Giants 12 Cards 7

Aubrey Huff let out a whole lot of pent up frustration tonight in a 3 home run explosion of offense with some help from Andres Torres and Freddy Sanchez to give Jonathan Sanchez a win despite a very shaky outing from the Durt Man. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .269.

Freddy Sanchez- 1 for 5, HR(3). BA= .296.

Aubrey Huff- 4 for 5, 3 HR(8). BA= .233.

That was the offense right there, for all practical purposes. Huff and Sanchez drove in 10 runs between them and Torres drove in the other two. The 3 also combined for 8 runs scored.

Jonathan Sanchez- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.50. I shudder to think what kind of a pitcher Sanchez would be if he had merely good stuff. Man, having exceptional stuff sure covers up a lot of bad.

Guillermo Mota- 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.39. Mota just hasn't been the same since that heroic 4 inning stint early in the season. Maybe it's getting close to time to replace him with Marc Kroon?

Jeremy Affeldt- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.91. Affeldt now has two consecutive 2 inning appearances without giving up a run.

The Win enabled the Giants to move past the D'Backs into first place in the NL West by 0.5 games. The Rockies and Dodgers were idle so each lost a half game to 4.5 and 5.5 games behind respectively. The Padres lost to Houston 7-4 to fall 7.5 games behind.

The Giants come home tomorrow night to start a 10 game homestand against the Reeling Rockies with Matt Cain taking the mound against Rookie Juan Nicasio who has an ERA of 0 after his first major league start last Saturday against the Cardinals. Nicasio was called up from AA Tulsa, but he had a serious record there: 5-1, 2.22, 56.2 IP, 10 BB, 63 K's. AA is not the major leagues but the kid has a mid-90's fastball and could be real dangerous to a team that hasn't seen him before and often struggles offensively anyway.

It's good to have Huff back though!

Scouting the Draft: Ranking the RHP's

First a couple of notes:

There's in interesting tidbit on sfgiants.com from Giants Director of Scouting, John Barr. He says the Giants have 800 players ranked on their draft board and will draft BPA all the way. He also said that he is confident that at least one player who they have ranked in their top 15 will be there at #29. This may mean they are willing to go well above slot for a signing bonus and are looking to grab someone who falls due to signability concerns or it may mean they have some players ranked a lot higher than they think other teams do. Intriguing!

Draft analysts like John Sickels and BA are apparently getting strong vibes that a lot of teams are unexpectedly targeting position players in the first round, possibly thinking the draft is so deep in pitching they will still be able to get high ceiling pitchers later in the draft. If that's the case, there could be a bonanza of high ceiling pitching available in the 29-49 range where the Giants have their first round and supplemental round picks.

On with the RHP rankings, as always, based on BA's rankings:

First Round:

1. Gerrit Cole, UCLA- 6-7, 3.28, 107 IP, 23 BB, 108 K's. Didn't even let the Yankees make an offer when they drafted him late in the first round out of high school. Now will likely go #1 or #2 overall in this draft. Got hit a little bit in the second half of this season, but a premium talent who should be a MLB star if not a HOF'er.

2. Trevor Bauer, UCLA- 12-2, 1.27, 127.2 IP, 34 BB, 189 K's!! There are people out there who like Bauer better than Cole. There are other teams out there who don't have him on their draft board at all because he insists on long-tossing! How inflexible and stupid is that? It's really a shame that some team is going to take him before the Giants have a chance. He's a slightly bigger clone of Tim Lincecum. The Giants would be a perfect team for him and he would be a perfect pick for them. Alas, it won't happen!

3. Dylan Bundy, HS- There are some people who think Bundy might be the best pitcher in the draft, period. He's hit triple digits on radar guns multiple times with K/BB's that are off the charts. He's a workout freak and already has a plus curveball and cutter with an average changeup. Won't be there at #29!

4. Sonny Gray, Vanderbilt- 10-3, 2.12, 101.2 IP, 39 BB, 112 K's. This is a guy who might fall, due to his height(5'11") but probably not as far as to #29. Best pitch is a power curveball to go with a fastball that gets up to 97 MPH. The changeup needs work.

5. Taylor Jungmann, Texas- 13-0, 0.95, 122.2 IP, 27 BB, 116 K's. He's been a stud since he was a freshman. FB isn't quite in the class as the top 4, sitting at 91-93 topping out at 95, but he makes up for it with his height(6'6") and downhill plane with the ability to keep the ball low. Relies on the FB but the slider is improved and the changeup is improving. Another possible slider but probably not to #29.

6. Taylor Guerrieri, HS- A late bloomer whose fastball gets up to 98 MPH. He may end up falling back down due to off-field incidents that raise character issues. The Giants don't have a history of drafting players with known makeup issues.

7. Archie Bradley, HS- Athletic projectable body with a FB that goes 92-98 MPH. He's a highly rated football QB recruit to Oklahoma so will take a lot of $$ to sign. That can be a plus though, because there is a special exemption for 2 way prospects that allows the bonus to be spread out over 5 years. Again, will probably go well before #29.

8. Matt Barnes, Connecticut- 11-3, 1.12, 112.1 IP, 28 BB, 105 K's. Great pitcher's frame at 6'4", 205 lbs. FB sits 92-96 with a peak of 98. Most mocks have him projected mid first round but has an outside chance of falling to #29 if there is a big run on position players. He would be a very solid choice.

9. Jose Fernandez, HS- a Cuban refugee who comes with some questions about his age which is already listed as older than most HS graduates at 19. At 6'3", 235 lbs, weight is also a concern for the future. Has 3 "swing and miss pitches" FB 90-95 with heavy sink plus a slider and curve that sometimes morph into a slurve. There is enough great pitching available in this draft that I would probably stay away.

10. Alex Meyer, Kentucky- 7-5, 2.94, 101 IP, 46 BB, 110 K's. Huge 6'9", 220 lb power pitcher whose FB sits in the mid-upper 90's. Has made great strides with his command this year. Stock is volatile and could go anywhere from top 10 early supplemental round. Command is iffy enough that I might stay away unless he falls all the way to #49.

11. John Stilson, Texas A&M- had a great junior season but is reportedly out now with a torn labrum which should put him off the board entirely.

12. Robert Stephenson, HS- Local kid from Martinez, CA. 6'2" with long arms and legs and a sturdy, yet athletic frame. Has dialed his fastball up to the mid-90's topping out at 97. A good student who is committed to Washington and may want to go to school. Lots of buzz about the Giants being in on him with some mocks having him a bit higher. If he's there at #29 and if they think they can get him signed, he might be the BPA!

13. Dillon Howard, HS- Good body with a low-mid 90's FB that he pounds with heavy sink. Command has been an issue at times and I've read that he has hefty bonus demands. I've thought he might be #1 on the Giants board of likely available pitchers, but not so sure now.

Supplemental Round:

14. Tyler Beede, HS- 6'4", 200 lbs with FB that goes 88-95 MPH with a good changeup and firm curveball. Advanced command and feel for pitching. The Giants definitely scout the northeast, so I'm sure they know about him.

15. Joe Ross, HS- Brother of Tyson Ross who pitched for Cal and is now in the A's organization. Similar build as Stephenson with maybe not quite as much fastball. Has had elbow questions. Another pitcher who has been linked to the Giants in several mock drafts, which of course don't mean anything. I'd be OK with him at #49, not so much at #29.

16. Jorge Lopez, HS(Puerto Rico)- Projectable 6'4", 180 lb frame. FB 89-93. Above average curveball. Main attraction is his projectability. Optioned to Fresno posted a video and length scouting report and sold me. I'd be OK with him at #29 if Stephenson isn't there and he might be #1 on my board for #49.

17. Kyle Winkler, TCU- 8-2, 1.40, 90 IP, 13 BB, 98 K's. Amid all the hoopla around Matt Purke, Winkler quietly kept pounding the strike zone with a heavy 91-95 MPH fastball and power slider. His changeup is improved making him a true 3 pitch pitcher. Very competitive. Lack of height(5'11") seems to be his only negative. I've always liked his pitching lines in boxscores and would be happy if he was the Giants supplemental round pick.

18. Michael Fulmer, HS- Don't know much about him. From Oklahoma and has been overshadowed by Bundy and Bradley.

19. Dillon Maples, HS- Don't know much about him either. I get the feeling he's a later supplemental round talent.

20. Kyle Crick, HS- A latecomer to pitching. He was a first baseman but discovered he could hit 94 on radar guns and switched to pitching. Still quite raw but has worked on several secondary pitches. Nice size at 6'3", 225 lbs.

21. Tony Zych, Louisville- 0-2, 3.00, 30 IP, 14 BB, 30 K's, 13 Saves. College closer. FB goes 94-99 MPH. Let the Cape Cod League with 12 Saves and hit 97 in their all-star game. The Giants are known to scout the Cape heavily. Hmm.....

22. Anthony Meo, Coastal Carolina- 9-3, 2.21, 102 IP, 29 BB, 108 K's. Great velocity(93-96) with mixed results on the field. Some scouts see him as a future reliever. Threw a no-hitter in the Big South Tournament.

23. Hudson Boyd, HS- Big kid at 6'3", 235 lbs with a FB that goes 90-96. Has drawn comparisons to Jonathan Broxton and Bartolo Colon in terms of size and stuff.

Second Round:

24. Madison Boer, Oregon- 3-6, 2.27, 99 IP, 35 BB, 74 K's. Big guy at 6'4", 215 lbs. Big fastball 90-93 as a starter, 96 as a reliever. Has added a splitter that he throws at 2 different speeds.

25. Erik Johnson, Cal- 6-3, 2.08, 90.2 IP, 41 BB, 91 K's. Another big guy at 6'2", 240 lbs. FB 90-95. Good hard slider which he can throw for strikes or as a chase pitch out of the zone. Walks obviously may be an issue.

26. Andrew Gagnon, Long Beach State- 4-10, 2.81, 99.1 IP, 38 BB, 84 K's. Typical Long Beach State pounder who can work both sides of the plate. Projects more as a workhorse type.

27. Evan Marshall, Kansas St.- 5-5, 1.71, 58 IP, 15 BB, 50 K's. College reliever who throws much harder as a reliever than a starter. Could reach the majors quickly as a reliever.

28. Burch Smith, Oklahoma- 6'3", 195 lbs. 10-3, 3.62, 87 IP, 31 BB, 90 K's. Reaches 95 MPH with ease. Secondary stuff and command need work.

29. Bryan Brickhouse, HS- Same HS as Kyle Drabek and Jameson Taillon. Not as developed as Drabek and not as big or powerful as Taillon. May end up going to college at North Carolina.

30. Michael Kelly, HS- Haven't heard much about him. At 6'5", 210 lbs sounds like a typical HS projectable arm from BA's description.

31. Joe Musgrove, HS- Projectable big kid, 6'5", 225 lbs. FB 90-94 with heavy sink. Has played both offensive and defensive line in football and is a competitor. Projects to be a big workhorse starter.

Third/Fourth Rounds:

32. Noe Ramirez, CS Fullerton- 8-3, 1.74, 82.2 IP, 18 BB, 91 K's. Low 90's FB with fantastic pitchability.

33. Kyle McMillen, Kent State- 0-2, 2.03, 26.2 IP, 11 BB, 28 K's, 17 Saves. No scouting report.

34. Chris Marlowe, Oklahoma State- 3-3, 4.43, 40.2 IP, 33 BB, 70 K's! No scouting report, but look at that K/9!

35. Jeff Soptic, JC- No scouting report.

36. Matt Andriese, UC Riverside- 4-5, 2.63, 95.2 IP, 25 BB, 74 K's. 6'3", 205 lbs. mid-high 90's fastball with inconisistent results on the field. The Giants are known to scout the Riverside area heavily.

37. Logan Verrett, Baylor- 6-5, 2.81, 93 IP, 28 BB, 91 K's. Typical big time college Friday starter which means he's pretty good.

38. Kevin Comer, HS- No scouting report.

39. Colton Murray, Kansas- 3-4, 3.79, 40.1 IP, 15 BB, 33 K's, 7 Saves. No scouting report.

40. Matt Summers, UC Irvine- 10-2, 1.74, 103.2 IP, 30 BB, 90 K's. no scouting report.

41. Scott McGough, Oregon- 3-6, 3.59, 57.2 IP, 25 BB, 62 K's, 5 Saves. No scouting report. I think our reader from Hawaii has seen him pitch.

42. Kyle Smith, HS- No scouting report.

43. Navery Mooor, Vanderbilt- 4-2, 1.21, 29.2 IP, 12 BB, 25 K's, 11 Saves. Obviously a college closer. 6'2", 205 lbs. No scouting report.

44. Jeff Ames, JC- No scouting report.

45. Cory Mazzoni, NC State- 5-6, 3.38, 106.2 IP, 28 BB, 125 K's. No scouting report, but love the ratios.

46. JR Graham, Santa Clara- 3-5, 3.34, 62 IP, 9 BB, 45 K's, 3 Saves. No scouting report.

47. Lenny Linsky, Hawaii- 1-1, 1.30, 34.2 IP, 9 BB, 34 K's, 14 Saves. Hawaii's closer. Stock seems to be rising.

48. Nick Burdi, HS- No scouting report.

49. Mason Hope, HS- No scouting report.

50. Jake Reed, HS- No scouting report.

51. Brooks Pinckard, Baylor- 5-2, 3.81, 52 IP, 30 BB, 41 K's. No scouting report. More of a reliever than starter at Baylor.

52. John Curtiss, HS- No scouting report.

53. Adrian Houser, HS- No scouting report.

54. Hawtin Buchanan, HS- Huge kid at 6'8", 225 lbs. Man, I really really like what I see in the scouting videos. All I can say is if he is a fourth round talent in this draft then this is one heckuva draft! I would be ecstatic if the Giants took him as high as round 2. Think of a much bigger version of Matt Cain. Maybe the height affects his command?

55. Cole Wiper, HS- No scouting report.

56. Clay Homes, HS- No scouting report.

57. Matt Price, South Carolina- 5-3, 2.47, 43.2 IP, 14 BB, 58 K's, 15 Saves. No scouting report but SC is the defending College Champ so they must be doing something right. Draft eligible freshman?

58. Carson Smith, Texas State- 9-3, 1.98, 104.1 IP, 46 BB, 124 K's. 6'5", 215 lbs. No scouting report. Love the size and numbers.

Fifth/Sixth Rounds:

59. Carter Capps, Mount Olive(N.C.)- No scouting report, but scouts must have seen something to list him from a place like that.

60. Jack Armstrong, Jr, Vanderbilt- 0-1, 2.81, 16 IP, 17 BB, 15 K's. Big RHP who can pound the zone. MLB pedigree. Dad was a MLB pitcher for Cincinnati, I believe. Has spent most of this year rehabbing with limited innings, but has a high ceiling. John Klima likes him a lot.

61. Kyle McMyne, Villanova- 4-8, 4.75, 77.2 IP, 49 BB, 94 K's. Big kid with mid 90's velocity. Inconsistent results on the field.

62. Austin Wood, USC- 5-7, 5.61, 77 IP, 34 BB's, 50 K's. 6'4", 220 lbs. Throws hard but had terrible results on the field. Do scouts see something they can fix?

63. Cole Green, Texas- 7-3, 3.20, 90 IP, 18 BB, 90 K's. Senior. Saturday starter. Probably more of a #3 or #4 starter which ain't bad coming from the rounds 5/6.

64. Tyler Pill, CS Fullerton- 6-1, 2.08, 90.2 IP, 19 BB, 99 K's. Brett's baby bro. Two way player who probably projects better as a pitcher.

65. Mark Pope, Georgia Tech- 11-4, 1.77, 112 IP, 23 BB, 88 K's. 6'2", 205 lbs. Less hyped than Jed Bradley but very effective pitcher.

66. Michael Cederoth, HS- No scouting report.

67. Taylor Hill, Vanderbilt- 4-1, 3.00, 84 IP, 21 BB, 75 K's. 6-4", 225 lbs. No scouting report. Talent runs deep at a program like Vanderbilt.

68. Ian Gardeck, JC- No scouting report.

69. Sam Gaviglio, Oregon State- 11-2, 1.95, 106.1 IP, 25 BB, 102 K's. TJ graduate. Osich has been more hyped but Gaviglio has been OSU's best pitcher.

70. David Goforth, Mississippi- 4-8, 4.88, 83 IP, 27 BB, 63 K's. No scouting report.

71. Matt Stites, Missouri- 3-6, 3.72, 92 IP, 41 BB, 77 K's. No scouting report.

72. Dylan Davis, HS- I think Klima scouted him. I can't remember what he said.

73. Kyle Simon, Arizona- 10-3, 2.93, 119.2 IP, 11 BB, 80 K's. Big kid 6'5", 219 lbs. Liked his numbers this year, especially the low BB's.

74. Mike Wright, East Carolina- 6-3, 2.84, 92 IP, 26 BB, 70 K"s. No scouting report. 6'5" 195 lbs.

75. Ricky Jacquez, HS- No scouting report.

76. Blake Treinen, South Dakota State- 7-3, 3.00, 84 IP, 25 BB, 84 K's. 6'4", 220 lbs, Senior. No scouting report.

77. Taylor Scott, HS- No scouting report.

78. Nick Tropeono, Stony Brook- 12-1, 1.84, 93 IP, 24 BB, 119 K's. Joe Nathan's alma mater. FB up to 94 MPH. Nice size.

79. Devin Jones, Mississippi State- 2-5. 4.45, 54.2 IP, 23 BB, 48 K's. 6'3", 180 lbs. No scouting report.

80. Jesus Valdez, JC- No scouting report.

81. Ray Black, Pitt- 1-1, 6.30, 20 IP, 26 BB, 33 K's. 6'5" 225. Draft eligible soph. No scouting report.

82. Kenny Giles, JC- No scouting report.

83. Thomas Robson, HS(Canada)- Somebody over on Sickels' site liked him a lot.

84. Anthony DeSclafani, Florida- 5-3, 3.77, 43 IP, 5 BB, 37 K's, 3 Saves. No scouting report.

85. Cody Hebner, JC- No scouting report.

86. Aaron Nola, HS- No scouting report.

87. Brandon Woodruff, HS- No scouting report.

88. Ben Paullus, Memphis- 5-4, 2.98, 48.1 IP, 16 BB, 51 K's, 4 Saves. No scouting report.

89. Matt Ramsey, Tennessee-0-1, 0.96, 9.1 IP, 6 BB, 15 K's, 3 Saves. No scouting report. Played in the field more than he pitched.

90. Ryan Woolley, Alabama-Birmingham- No scouting report.

91. Dixon Anderson, Cal- 4-3, 4.04, 62.1 IP, 19 BB, 37 K's. 6'6", 225 lbs. No scouting report.

92. Colin O'Connell, CS Fullerton- 7-3, 2.42, 70.2 IP, 6 BB, 49 K's. 6'6", 200 lbs. No scouting report.

93. Rookie Davis, HS- gotta love the name if nothing else!

94. Gandy Stubblefield, HS- No scouting report.

95. Pat Connaughton, HS- No scouting report.

96. Ross Stripling, Texas A&M- 12-2, 2.41, 100.2 IP, 14 BB, 94 K's. 6'3", 190 lbs. No scouting report.

97. Chris Jenson, San Diego- 3-7, 3.95, 82 IP, 36 BB, 73 K's. 6'4" 190 lbs. No scouting report.

Down on the Farm: 6/1//2011

AAA Colorado Sky Sox beat the Fresno Grizzlies 7-2(Is it just me or has this series been going on forever?):

Edgar Gonzalez(SS)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .270.

Not much to see here.

AA Bowie Baysox edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2:

Clayton Tanner(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/4. ERA= 4.47.
Dan Klein(RHP, Baysox)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.08.

The Squirrels managed just 2 hits in the game. Klein was the closer for UCLA last year.

A+ Visalia Rawhide blanked the San Jose Giants 4-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .371.
Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 10/4. ERA= 2.63.
Jose Valdez(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.85.
Diogenes Rosario(RHP, Rawhide)- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.45.

Encouraging outing for Jose Valdez after a rough patch. Never heard of Rosario before and nothing special about the line. I just love his first name! Diogenes? When I was growing up in the hills above the Napa Valley, there was a beautiful yellow flower that grew there called Diogenes Lantern. Here's a great Jeopardy question: A: What Diogenes was looking for with his lantern. Q: What is an honest man?

Low A Augusta Greenjackets pounded the Asheville Tourists 13-6:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, S, SB(23). BA= .288.
Josh Mazzola(DH)- 3 for 4, 3B, 2 BB. BA= .221.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 1 for 6, 2B, Assist(home). BA= .243.
Chris Lofton(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(1), BB. BA= .256.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 7.12.
Peter Tago(RHP, Tourists)- 2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.73.

I just love Willoughby's lines game after game. Lofton is hitting .371 over his last 10 games and has been hot longer than that. He was a JC draftee who just turned 21 yo, so he's age appropriate for the league too. Peter Tago was a supplemental round draftee last year for the Rockies. He doesn't turn 19 until later this summer. He was ranked as Colorado's #5 prospect by BA.

DSL Yankees1 edged the Giants 5-4:

Franklin Matamoros(3B, 17 yo)- 2 for 4. BA= .286.

Game Wrap 6/1/2011: Giants 7 Cards 5

Whew! What a game! The Giants have played some very entertaining games this season, but perhaps none more so than this one as they won a see-saw battle in extra-innings punctuated by a mysterious lighting outage just before the final out. Key lines:

Miguel Tejada- 0 for 6. BA= .210. I post this one because the line looks terrible but Miggy hit the ball hard several times, just right at fielders.

Freddy Sanchez- 3 for 6, 2 2B. BA= .298. Freddy was smoking the ball, showing off his Batting Title form.

Aubrey Huff- 1 for 4, HR(5), BB. BA= .219. Huffster looked terrible in his first 3 AB's but then smoked a HR that gained the Giants a temporary 4-3 lead in the 7'th inning. He later walked and was lifted for pinch runner Emmanuel Burriss which payed off with Burriss stealing 2b and coming home on Nate's single to CF. Burriss stayed in and played 1B and played it well. There was one play where Crawford's throw was a bit up line and the ump said Burriss pulled his foot and called the runner safe. On replays, the ESPN announcers though he kept his foot on the bag, but I think he as off by less than 1 inch and the ump made the right call. I'm guessing if it was Pujols, the runner would have been called out though.

Nate Schierholtz- 3 for 6. BA= .274. Nate came up with 2 very clutch singles, one to tie it in the 9'th inning and another to to drive in the go-ahead run in the 11'th.

Cody Ross- 4 for 6, 2B, BB, SB(3). BA= .267. Cody had been in a mini-slump, but now has 7 hits in his last 3 games. He certainly peppered the field tonight. I'm thinking the Giants best OF configuration is Nate in RF, Torres in CF and Ross in LF. Stick with that for awhile and see if a chemistry can develop. It's also the best defensive OF configuration.

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 6. BA= .333. Crawford had another nice night at the plate, and his defense is a breath of fresh air, close-call throwing error notwithstanding.

Eli Whiteside- 2 for 4, BB, SF. A terrific game by Whiteside too, It seemed like he did something good at the plate every time up. He also threw out one runner and probably should have had another if Crawford could have held onto the ball to tag Rasmus.

Tim Lincecum- 6.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 2.59. On the surface it looks like Timmy was off tonight, but look at the K's and BB's. The hits in the 7'th inning were smoked but pretty much all of the earlier ones were seeing eye GB's, dinkers and dunkers. That is a very unlucky line for Timmy! He had terrific stuff!

Bullpen- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. Maybe the bullpen was a bit lucky, but they ended up shutting down the Cards' offense once Timmy left the game.

The W enabled the Giants to keep pace with the Dangerous Dangerous D'Backs who came from behind to edge the Marlins 6-5 to maintain their 0.5 game lead. The Rockies blanked the Dodgers behind Ubaldo Jimenez to gain sole possession of 3'rd place, 4.5 games behind the D'Backs with the Dodgers falling 5.5 games back. The Padres lost to ATL 4-3 to fall 7 games behind in last place in the NL West.

Jonathan Sanchez will try to make it a 3-1 series win tomorrow. The listed starter for the Cardinals is Jaime Garcia, but the team has announced that Kyle McClellan is being place on the DL with a hip flexor strain suffered in the first inning of game 1 of this series. Lance Lynn is being called up and will make his MLB debut tomorrow pitching on 3 days rest from his last minor league start. Strange! I've liked Lynn since he was in college though so it should be in interesting matchup, but one the Giants would seem to have a good chance of winning.

Scouting the Draft: Ranking the LHP's

The Giants have not shown a particular preference for LHP's or RHP's although Madison Bumgarner is the only LHP they've taken in the first round in the Brian Sabean era. The common denominators seem to be velocity and fastball command as the major criteria the Giants look for in the early rounds. Here's a breakdown of how BA ranks the LHP's in this draft along with my own comments:

First Round:

1. Danny Hultzen, Virginia- Definite top 10 pick, probable top 5 D'Backs seem like the most likely destination.

2. Jed Bradley, Georgia Tech- Big kid with excellent velocity and great command. Has not allowed a HR this season. Perfect fit for the Giants, but won't be there at #29.

3. Daniel Norris, HS- The top HS LHP in the country. I'm not enamored with his mechanics from what I've seen in videos. Should go a lot higher than #29 anyway.

4. Tyler Anderson, Oregon- 8-3, 2.17, 107.2 IP, 35 BB, 114 K's. Polished college LHP with good stuff. He'll probably go higher than #29, but has an outside chance of being there. More of a pitchability guy than a stuff guy which is why I'm not sure the Giants would take him even if he drops to them.

5. Matt Purke, Texas Christian- Was the top ranked LHP in the pre-season. Stock has dropped considerably due to shoulder issues, loss of velocity and mediocre performances. Personally, I'd stay away even at #29

6. Henry Owens, HS- 6'7" tall. Has an advanced feel for pitching but not as much velocity as you might expect for a kid his size. A real possibility at #29. Whether the Giants would take him probably depends on whether they think the velocity spike to 94 is real and whether Tidrow sees something he can tweak to create a monster.

Supplemental Round:

7. Andrew Chafin, Kent State- 7-1, 1.90, 80.1 IP, 21 BB, 97 K's. Missed 2010 with TJ. Low- mid 90's velocity and a wipeout slider. Had some dominating starts this year. Has an outside chance of being taken late in the first round.

8. Josh Osich, Oregon State- 6-4, 3.57, 75.2 IP, 32 BB, 79 K's. Another TJ graduate. Big LHP with a mid-90's fastball and a nice changeup. Got progressively stronger as the season progressed. Reached a peak with a no-hitter against UCLA, but has faded a bit down the stretch. He would fit the mold of the typical Giants pitcher and the Giants have never shied away from drafting TJ survivors. The Giants are rumored to have scouted him heavily. Seems to be on the short list for #29.

9. Sean Gilmartin, Florida State- 11-1, 1.52, 106.1 IP, 18 BB, 116 K's. A pitchability lefty who has been compared to Mike Minor. Doesn't seem to fit what the Giants look for at the top of the draft. Has had an excellent junior year season with 4 double digit K games. I wonder what Buster has to say about him?

10. Chris Reed, Stanford- 6-2, 2.61, 48.1 IP, 14 BB, 48 K's, 8 Saves. Mostly used as a reliever at Stanford. Big lefty who has touched 96 MPH but has been inconsistent. Probably projects more for the back end of the supplemental round.

11. Adam Conley, Washington St.- 6-7, 3.50, 108, IP, 27 BB, 83 K's. Another big Pac 10 lefty. Mixed reviews. Probably more for back end of supplemental round.

Second Round:

12. Charlie Lowell, Wichita State- 10-5, 2.79, 103.1 IP, 40 BB, 124 K's. Big LHP with 90-95 FB. Don't know much more about him. Nice K/9 though.

Third/Fourth Rounds:

13. Dillon Peters, HS- Small lefty with a low 90's fastball and good pitchability. Limited upside. Committed to Texas.

14. Bryan Flynn, Wichita State- 6-4, 4.63, 83.2 IP, 39 BB, 77 K's. No scouting report.

15. Kylin Turnbull, JC- No info.

16. Grayson Garvin, Vanderbilt- 12-1, 2.35, 95.2 IP, 20 BB, 82 K's. Nice size and has pitched well for a major program. I like him as much as some of the supplemental round guys and he would be a steal in rounds 3 or 4.

17. Kevin Matthews, HS- No info.

18. Bryce Bandilla, Arizona- 5-3, 3.65, 44.1 IP, 32 BB, 47 K's. Big Kid. 6'4", 237 lbs. No scouting info.

19. Nick Maronde, Florida- 0-0, 1.72, 36.2 IP, 6 BB, 49 K's. Used mostly as a reliever. Don't know much about him. 6'3", 200 lbs.

20. Adam Morgan, Alabama- 5-6, 4.14, 91.1 IP, 23 BB, 72 K's. Seems like a standard big program college lefty.

21. Daniel Camarena, HS- No info.

Fifth/Sixth Rounds:

22. Cody Kukuk, HS- Tall lefty with nice arm action. Has an abrupt ending to his delivery. If that can be fixed, I could see him adding a couple of MPH to his current 90-92. Kind of a sleeper who could go higher if some team thinks it can improve his delivery.

23. Blake Snell, HS- No info.

24. Carlos Rodon, HS- No info.

25. Ryan Carpenter, Gonzaga- 8-2, 2.62, 96 IP, 33 BB, 107 K's. Big lefty with inconsistent velocity. I think he would be a steal in the 5'th round.

26. Amir Garrett, HS- Tall lefty who has played mostly basketball. Seems to have a ton of raw talent. John Sickels has him going to the Giants at #49 in the supplemental round in his latest mock draft.

27. Jake Cave, HS- No info.

28. Chris Lamb, Davidson- 1-7, 3.75, 81.2 IP, 19 BB, 85 K's. Smallish lefty with nice ratios. Went to HS in Berkeley. Seems to be a superior student, so might opt to stay in school for his senior year.

29. Will Lamb, Clemson- 1-1, 5.11, 24.2 IP, 11 BB, 29 K's. Two way player who hit .344 and stole 13 of 17 bases as a hitter. Tall lefty at 6'6". Just the type of guy the Giants might take as a pitcher in the 5'th or 6'th round.

30. Anthony Cingriani, Rice- 4-2, 1.76, 56.1 IP, 10 BB, 65 K's, 12 Saves. Senior, so should be an easy sign. 6'5", 205 lbs. Looks good for the 5'th or 6'th rounds.

31. Roberto Padilla, San Jose State- 9-6, 3.19, 98.2 IP, 46 BB, 81 K's. 6'3", 201 lbs. No scouting report.

32. Sam Stafford, Texas- 5-2, 1.70, 63.2 IP, 37 BB, 75 K's. Sunday starter for Texas, but talent runs deep in a program like Texas. Klima has scouted him and really likes him a lot. 6'4", 190 lbs.

33. Trent Howard, Central Michigan- 4-4, 2.78, 87.1 IP, 22 BB, 96 K's. Another guy who Klima likes a lot. Love the ratios.

Down on the Farm: 5/31/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies out hit the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 8-7:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 3 for 3, 2B, BB, HBP, SB(24). BA= .273.
Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 1 for 2, BB, SF, S. BA= .293.
Thomas Neal(LF)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .375.
Mark Kroon(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(12). ERA= 3.10.

Graham reached base in all 5 of his PA's. I think he could help some MLB team as a 4'th OF. Was this Marc Kroon's last appearance for the organization?

AA Bowie Baysox topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2:

Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(3). BA= .235.
Drew Biery(1B)- 0 for 3. BA= .000.
Daryl Maday(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 11/1. ERA= 3.83.
Alex Hinshaw(LHP)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.00.

Richmond is just not a very interesting team right now. Noonan and Culberson are slumping. Monell is struggling. Kieschnick is about the only position player showing signs of life. Biery gets the promo from Augusta. Hopefully we'll see Gary Brown before too long.

A+ San Jose Giants blanked the Stockton Ports 2-0:

Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .279.
David Mixon(RHP)- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 1.88.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(18). ERA= 0.87.

Hembree is another guy who looks like he needs to be promoted. The Giants have been challenging him with back-to-back games quite often. His line for his last 10 appearances: 0-0, 0.93, 9.2 IP, 3 BB, 18 K's with 10 Saves.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets beat the Rome Braves 5-3:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 1 for 4, S, 2 SB(22). BA= .284.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(2). BA= .175.
Josh Mazzola(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(4), BB. BA= .205.
Ryan Lollis(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .500.
Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.75.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.04.

Lollis gets sent down from San Jose, presumably to get more opportunity to play. Sanford's GO/AO was only 7-6, but the Greenjackets infield turned 4 DP's.

DSL Giants shut out the Marlins 3-0:

Luis Vasquez(C, 20 yo)- 1 for 1, 3 BB. BA= .333.
Carlos Diaz(LHP, 17 yo)- 4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

DSL Giants have allowed just 1 run in their first 3 games.
