  1. With all these promising young catchers, what happens if Lackey falls to no. 4 in the upcoming draft?

    1. Fall to fourth? I mean it’s already really realistic that he’s going to be available at #4 so I wouldn’t call that a “fall”. Posey and co will choose the best player available and they have a lot of great options. They can go with the drafts number one pitcher or catcher or go for one of the many dynamic short stops that are available. Those three options seem to be the most realistic. Given our current catching depth, I think they only draft Lackey if they truly believe in him, otherwise they will obviously pass on him.

  2. There are not many catchers who have both the offensive and defensive potential of Lackey, not to mention the athleticism to play multiple positions and steal bases. The fact that he has done it for the entire season allays fears that he’s a helium case. Ironically the last Giants catcher to lock down that key position for a decade could have the chance to draft the next one. But I expect the Twins to spring for Lackey. So as for which dynamic shortstops they will have to choose from, I expect Cholowsky and Emerson to be off the board, with either one being a justifiable #1 or #2, leaving Lombard as the only shortstop left who would make the most sense at #4. He certainly has the tools to dream on and has the ceiling of a superstar if all goes right. But Booth Jr is growing on me as a player with nearly the ceiling of Lombard but with more certainty of reaching his ceiling. The upcoming summer showcase circuit will be critical in determining the Giants decision since it will allow scouts to see both players performing against elite pitching.
