  1. Meckler 2B experiment over?

    1. I think Meckler has an informal fan club that reads way too much into where he plays in the minor leagues. As we sometimes say when nothing of significance happens in a game: Nothing to see here, move along.

    2. You may not think much of Meckler’s potential but the front office sees something because they have been giving him reps at multiple positions to increase his chances of making it.

    3. It's actually being reported all over the net:
Susan Slusher, SF Chronicle, on X: "Interesting: Wade Meckler will start at second base for the @RiverCats tonight."
Around the Foghorn, Nick San Miguel, "SF Giants are getting creative to try and solve lack of production at second base" https://aroundthefoghorn.com/sf-giants-are-getting-creative-to-try-and-solve-lack-of-production-at-second-base

    4. The whole Meckler to 2B started late last season when it was announced he would practice at 2B and has had several stops and starts. He did not play any games there in 2024 Then he played only OF in spring training. So far in the regular season he has played 4 games at 2B, 3 in CF, 7 in LF, 4 in RF and 2 at DH. If the Giants were serious about him as starting 2B option he would be starting every game at 2B. This is an attempt to give a fringy prospect a chance to make it as a utility player. And yes, I have see all those references listed. They are all breathless takes on someone noticing he played a game at 2B which has not turned out to be a sustained effort.

    5. And don't get me wrong. I like Meckler going clear back to when he was drafted. I don't think anyone has highlighted his progress and hit tool more than I. What I am reacting to is a feeling that in some minds he's taken on way more significance in the Giants future than is warranted. OMG! He's playing 2B tonight! He might be the solution there! On no! He played LF last night, it the experiment over? Come on, folks! There was never an experiment. Meckler is a fringy prospect whose opportunities are going to be limited if he can only play one position. So, he's adding to his resume to try to be a viable future utility option. If/when he starts playing every game at 2B I might revise that assessment but until then that's all this is.
