Game Wrap 9/1/0214: Rockies 10 Giants 9

Tim Hudson and the Giants looked like they were waltzing to their second win of the day with a 7-2 lead in the 6'th inning when the music suddenly stopped and the game turned into a Coors Field Special.  We all know how those turn out!  Key Lines:

Joe Panik- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .310.  Panik just keeps cranking out the hits, even if a lot of them are squibbers and bloopers.  Hey, if you put the ball in play, good things can happen!  He made a key error on a dropped throw from Pablo Sandoval in the disastrous 6'th inning that helped keep the Rockies' rally alive.

Buster Pose 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .299.  Buster stays hot.

Hunter Pence- 1 for 4, HR(19), BB.  BA= .295.  Huge day for Pence as he had the game winning hit in the suspended game and ripped a 3 run HR in the first inning to get the Giants off to a great start in this one.  That is why, even though he can hit leadoff or second in the order, you like his power a bit lower so he can come up in the first inning with runners on base.  Pence is putting himself into the conversation for NL MVP.  His current fWAR of 5.4 trails only Giancarlo Stanton and Jonathan Lucroy who leads with 5.6.

Brandon Crawford- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .230.  Crawford seems to have found whatever was missing from his stroke for 2 months.  A big September from him would be huge for the Giants.

Tim Hudson- 5 IP,  7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.08.  A look at the K and BB numbers tells you Huddy pitched better than this looks.  He's always struggled at Coors but looked like he had that monkey off his back until the 6'th when he could not get an out.  The dropped ball at 2B didn't help, but things fell apart for Huddy in that 6'th inning and the bullpen did not have enough gas to bail him out.

Hunter Strickland- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Strickland makes his MLB debut and wow!  His FB sat at 98-99 and hit triple digits once.  The Giants obviously already like him, but that had to make an additional impression!

The Dodgers lost, so the Giants pick up 0.5 games in the standings and now trail in the NL West by 2 games, but they blew a massive opportunity to close the gap to 1 game.  They also lead the Milwaukee Brewers for the first Wild Card playoff slot by 1.5 games and lead the Braves by 3 and the Pirates by 3.5 games.

Yusmeiro Petit face Jordan Lyles in tonight's game.

  1. Is Strickland known for that type of gas or was yesterday the result of being fresh, adrenaline, and some thin air?

Given regular work isn't he usually 94-96 with reach back to 98 or so?

  5. the error panik shouldve gone on pablo. he mishandled the ball and handcuffed panik on the throw

i think craw may finally playing at closs to 100 percent. his throws look much stronger.

strickland has to work a bit on his secondary pitches but has a very impressive arm

romo was hanging everything, not a good thing to do at coors

right after the game, mrs hudson tweeted....the coors curse is real....yuccchhh....gotta feel bad for huddy, its the one park he has never won in

does appear that the race for the west and the wc are gonna go down to the wire, but the nats are gonna be hard to beat in the post and they are running away in the east

  6. Did anyone feel that 7-2 was going to be the final score?

Romo needs to be in a Southwest Airlines ad at Coors. "Need to get away?"

Hunter Strickland shows the value of power pen arms - they don't have to worry about sink or cut at Coors. I think this H2 is going play an important role down the stretch, the Giants need a deep pen to win it.

Love Huddy's post gamer - he gritted his way through it, but wanted to yell out, "This place sucks!"

If the Giants split at Coors, I will be happy (but I hate saying this). Thank god they have a day off before Detroit.

    1. You are correct about a guy bringing the heat being sooo valuable in CO. I was not comfortable with Romo, Machi or Casilla on the mound (they really need to talk to Affelt about how he got it done.). I'm so glad to hear they have a day off after the games in CO, that is HUGE! great pick up MS.

  7. Strickland threw hard but it looked fairly straight to me. As someone said, he is going to need to figure out some secondardy pitches at this level but you can't teach 100 MPH heat!

Knew the mojo had to end for the team at some point, today is a new day though!
