Game Wrap Spring Training 2013: Giants 6 Brewers 1

The Giants dispatched the BrewCrew in workmanlike fashion as Matt Cain pitched 3 strong innings, the offense chipped out some runs and the bullpen was lights out.  Key Lines:

Hector Sanchez- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .250.  Hector draws a walk!

Ricky Oropesa- 1 for 1.  BA= .267.  OK, it was a ball that glanced off the 2B glove, but 2 hits in 2 games after surviving the first cutdown.  Parents there to see it to boot.  Ricky making the most of his opportunities!

Cole Gillespie- 2 for 4. BA= .267.  Gillespie strengthens his hold on the 5'th OF spot.

Wilson Valdez- 2 for 4.  BA= .250.  Valdez played SS which is what sets him apart from the other contenders for the reserve IF role.

Brett Pill- 1 for 3.  BA= .280. Pill is stating his case for the a reserve corner IF/OF role.  Gillespie would seem to be his competition, but maybe the Giants would carry just 1 MI reserve?

Matt Cain- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.40.  I believe this is Cainer's strongest outing of the spring so far.  That's OK, it's a long spring.  Don't want to peak too early and get worn down.

Jake Dunning- 2 IP, 0 R.  ERA= 1.59.  Dunning has had a strong spring for future reference.

Sandy Rosario(1.80), George Kontos(1.50), Jean Machi(3.60), Dan Otero(2.25)- 1 scoreless frame each.

The Giants scheduled a B game against the D'Backs in Salt River Fields just so they could see Mike Kickham and Christ Heston pitch a few innings.  Both turned in strong performances with Bruce Bochy and Rags sitting on the bench and none other than Brian Sabean and several of his peeps in attendance.  I don't think we are going to see a boxscore from that game.

Hot Tip:  I have a new link posted over to the left.  I noticed I was getting some traffic from a site called Giants Win.  I checked it out and it's a nice little blog.  Look for it over on the left and check it out for yourself.

  1. Hey Drb,

Assuming Ricky O goes to AA, what kind of offensive #'s in terms of HRS, RBI'S and BA does he realistically need to put up for you to consider him having a good year? I was surprised he didn't hit more then 16 hrs last season.

Didn't watch the Marco Gonzales pitched game on Friday. Our radio announcer said he was touching 92mph with his fastball. I even saw a mock draft with the Giants taking him. He pitched well that night, but I wouldn't put too much into it because it pains me to say that Hawaii hasn't hit anybody this season..

    1. Oh, I don't think there are any hard and fast numbers a prospect has to get at Richmond to consider it a successful tour of duty. I see Richmond and the EL more as something they need to survive then necessarily dominate. I would consider a BA of .230 above with double digit HR's to be adequate performance there.

  2. Shortstop depth - we had Arias as Crawford's backup last year. He is still with the team isn't he?

I suppose in a pinch Scutaro could play here - didn't he play SS fairly recently?

It would be nice but I wonder if the ability to play tha position is that critial in the competition for backup infielder position among Tanaka, Valdez, et al,?

    1. I'm just going by some of the comments the beat writers have made that Tanaka has to be able to play SS to make the team.

  3. I haven't seen any of the games, but is Gillespie really grabbing a hold of the 5th OF spot over Peguero?...In total, Peguero has him easily beatout at the plate but it should be the next two weeks that decide it..

I'm betting the Giants would love to see what ABREU brings at all IF positions over the next few weeks also.

    1. There are other factors to consider besides simply who plays better in spring training. We all know that spring training stats are fairly meaningless. Gillespie has more MLB experience than Pegs. I think the Giants see Pegs as still more in a developmental stage of his career than Gillespie and with a higher ceiling, so they are not going to want to stunt his growth by putting him on the bench. Thus, I think Pegs either has to win the LF starting job outright or else he will go to Fresno and be a starter there. Since I think Pegs winning the starting LF gig is a longshot at best, I think Gillespie will be kept as the 5'th OF while Pegs goes down to Fresno.

Agree with Abreu will get his chance if he can stay healthy, something he has never done in his entire career.

    2. For what it's worth this weekend the Gints had Gellespie DHing and Peggs in LF. Neither player impressed with the bat. Cole was definitely being aggressive early in the counts.

Have to say our homegrowns Bond and Noonan looked a lot better than the reclamation projects. Abreu and his switch hitting might get a leg up. Was not impressed with Ehire in limited action, Noonan had a nice play in a ball Adrianza should have got to, Ehire playing short and Nick at 3B.

Belt was not sharp on Saturday, balls going by him to the left, balls going by to the right. He finally shook it off and went yard...

My buddy liked Ricky O's swing. Also said he moved nicely for a big guy. Kind of fun to get a semi-neutral non-prospect hound opinion.

  4. OT: Goldfarb speaks! A lot!
    http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2013/03/notes-quotes-from-days-two-and-three-of-the-sabr-analytics-conference/

"For a player like Pablo Sandoval, even at a young age you could see the power in BP, even though he would hit about eight home runs during the season," Goldfarb said. "The unique thing with a player like him is that he’ll see progress in the power department sooner if he’s a good hitter.

"Big strikeout guys who never control the strike zone, they often don’t make it because they’re not hitters first."

    Lots of stuff to consider.

    1. I'm thinking Yeshaya was not about to reveal any proprietary secrets in that sesh. I mean, you could see Pablo's power in batting practice? Good hitter are going to develop their power more quickly? Tidrow is a genius at developing pitchers? Not exactly revealing stuff, there!

    2. I like that quote on strikeouts though. Tidrow is a genius with the pitchers. I saw a Schulman tweet today after somebody was complaining about our lack of a 6th starter and Timmy/Zito in their walk years. Nobody except Stratton, Crick, Heston, Kickham... and he left out Blackburn and Mejia. Giants have a lot of nice depth. Fans are just spoiled by the top of the draft run from 06-09.
