The Giants hit rockets off Pirates SP Ivan Nova throughout the game, but only tallied runs in the 6'th inning. Derek Holland made sure that was enough as he stood in the gap and filled the Stopper role to a T. Key Lines:
Gorkys Hernandez CF- 1 for 5, HR(2). BA= .275. Gorkys Hernandez crushed one to CF in the first inning that left his bat at more than 100 MPH. It was caught on the warning track. The Giants hit about 6 or 7 more rockets at more than 100 MPH off the bat before Hernandez finally hit one out of the park to lead off the 6'th inning to tally the Giants first run of the game.
Brandon Belt LF/1B- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .286. Belt was stroking the ball around the field and helped the Giants add on in the pivotal 6'th inning with a 1-out single and later scored on Brandon Crawford's double. Ironic that the single led to a run but the 2 doubles did not, but that's what kind of a day it was.
Gregor Blanco PR/LF- 1 for 1. BA= .272. Pablo Sandoval started the game at 1B with Brandon Belt in LF. Pabs kept the line moving in the 6'th with a hard comebacker that caromed off Nova. Bochy sent Gregor Blanco in to PR. After coming around to score, he stayed in the game in LF while Belt moved over to 1B. Blanco got a hit of his own in a later AB.
Brandon Crawford SS- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .263. Crawford's BA is up to about where you would expect it to be. He's hitting .320 over his last 7 games and .357 over his last 15. He also made a scintillating play on defense when he threw out Jose Osuna, who had doubled, trying to advance to 3B on a grounder to SS. Craw said "Not havin' it!" and made it look easy.
Nick Hundley C- 1 for 4, HR(4). BA= .290. Do the Giants have the best backup catcher in baseball or what? Hundley caught a great start by Derek Holland and put the game away with a 3-run blast down the LF line to cap off the 5-run rally in the 6'th.
Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 2 for 4. BA= .250. Kelby is physically just not capable of doing some of the things Alen Hanson has been doing, but he still gives tough AB's and is generally a pesky hitter. He has been in a 1 for 16 slump coming in. He appeared in 10 games during that stretch and had just 1 AB in 8 of them. So, good to see him slap out a couple of knocks even if they did not contribute to the scoring.
Derek Holland LHP- 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 6/2. ERA= 4.79. The Giants needed a Stopper start and Holland did not seem like a likely guy to give it. The 5 BB's are kind of ugly but other than that, he was superb keeping the Pirates hitters off balance and holding them to no runs until the Giants offense could finally break through.
Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Will Smith looked sharp which would seem to bode well for the future.

The NL West leading D'backs lost to the Nationals 6-4 so by my count, the 3'rd place Giants are now 4.5 games behind in the division. The Rockies also lost, 7-3 to the BrewCrew so they remain 2.5 games behind the Snakes. The 4'th place Dodgers got swept by the Reds, of all teams, and are 8.5 games off the pace and just 0.5 games out of last place! The Padres topped the Cardinals 5-3 and are just 0.5 games behind the Dodgers and are 9 games behind the division leaders.

Game Wrap 5/12/2018: Pirates 6 Giants 5
The Giants fought back to a tie from a 5-3 deficit only to fall behind again on a strange series of plays and ultimately take their 6'th consecutive loss. Key Lines:
Andrew McCutchen RF- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .254. Bright spot! Cutch is hitting .370 over his past 7 games and .333 over his last 15.
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 5, HR(8). BA= .246. Longoria has been steady at the plate and is on a pace to hit 30 HR's. On the other hand, he's been shaky at best on defense. I am not sure if he made a poor play when he failed to get an out on a bouncer into foul territory with runners on 1'st and 3'rd in the 8'th inning or if Josh Bell just made a very heads up baserunning play or both. With 1 out, David Freese hit bounced a ball that Longoria fielded in foul territory. Bell broke for home but quickly realized home was Longoria's only option so he stopped and dived back for 3B eluding Longoria's tag. Once Longoria missed the tag, Bell was behind him and easily got back to 3B. Longoria had plenty of time to throw out Bell at home, so he probably should have broken straight for 3B to cut off Bell's path back to the bag, although his momentum may have prevented him from doing that. Tony Watson hit the next batter to force in the winning run.
Alen Hanson 2B- 2 for 3, HR(4), BB. BA= .298. Is it just me or does it seem like every time the Giants have a young players who looks like they will give the team a sustained lift, they get injured? Every since Joe Panik went on the DL, Hanson has been terrific, looking every bit like the former top 100 prospect he was with the Pirates. He homered in the 2'nd inning, then limped around to score the tying run in the 8'th inning on Austin Jackson's double. The game report on sfgiants.com called it a hammy "tweak", but from the looks of it, a DL stint is a real possibility. So, Jarrett Parker, Mac Williamson 2 or 3 times, Austin Slater and now Hanson. All young players who looked like they were ready to give sustained production, all interrupted by significant injuries. Well, I guess we don't know for sure on Hanson, but it didn't look good to me.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 6.94. The dinger bug continues to bite the Shark, but overall probably his strongest performance this season.
Sam Dyson RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO- 2/0. ERA= 3.12. Another bright spot. Dyson's ERA over his last 7 appearances is 1.35 with a 0.90 WHIP.
Tony Watson LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.65. A weird series of plays but the biggest factor was giving up a leadoff double to Josh Bell then a productive out to Corey Dickerson. The HBP to drive in the winning run is just inexplicable.

Scouting the 2018 Draft: Joey Bart's Swing
Hey team! Covechatter has a short video of Georgia Tech C Joey Bart hitting a HR up on his Twitter feed. Go check that out, then go check out video of Mac Williamson hitting from this season. It looks to me like Joey has been working with that same hitting coach who fixed Justin Turner and Big Mac. Look at where he's holding his hands down low, the relaxed open stance with a narrow stance. Look at how he starts his swing. All look very familiar if you've checked out Mac's swing from this season.
I'm not completely in love with any of the Giants draft options at #2 overall, but if it's true that they are down to Bart and Brady Singer, I'll give a thumbs up to Bart after seeing that video. I am also moving Joey above Travis Swaggerty who still has great K and BB rates but whose BA has taken a dive of late and several first person scouting reports have been less than enthusiastic. Alec Bohm is crushing it for Wichita St but he's a corner player and I'm not sure how much I trust Wichita St numbers to translate. If it is not Bart or Bohm, I would prefer to see the Giants go with Jerad Kelenic, who has a similar profile to Swaggerty, but is already a bit bigger and stronger out of HS, or a HS pitcher like Carter Stewart, Matt Liberatore or Cole Winn, 3 names they've been linked to in the draft cycle.
Recent reports on Kumar Rocker who still has that dreamy physicality have not been positive. I'm guessing Rocker falls far enough that he will end up at Vanderbilt. I think we've reviewed Stewart and Liberatore. Winn is a bit smaller at 6'2", 175 lbs, but. has a 3-pitch mix and an advanced feel for pitching that could make him a fast mover. I could see the Giants cutting a below-slot deal with him to upgrade their haul in later rounds. If you take signing bonus out of the equation, Winn is probably not a kid you would spend a #2 overall pick on. My comp for him would be Logan Webb who the Giants picked in the 4'th round a few years ago and is a fine prospect. Just not what you want with your #2 overall.
But yeah, I've been down on Bart because of positional risk and a high K rate. I looked at his stat line and he's brought the K rate down from about 25% last year to 20% this year while greatly increasing his walk rate and BA to go with his impressive power. Combine all that with glowing reports of his catcher defense and I am OK with moving Bart up to #2 on my draft board after consensus 1-1, Casey Mize.

I continue to not understand why Austin Slater is not on the 25 man roster, at least while Mac Williamson and Hunter Pence are on the DL. Not sure what Caleb Baragar has done to get on on the AAA team. The good and bad of Ray Black on display. Let's see how he does in future AAA appearances.

Raffi Vizcaino's strongest start of the season so far. The walks need to come down. He has 21 in 31.1 IP.

Game Wrap 5/11/2018: Pirates 11 Giants 2
It's a bit tough to know where to start discussing a game like this. An old problem of leaving runners on base reared its ugly head, but it might not have mattered because the pitching was atrocious. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco LF- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .273. We can't blame this one on Gregor Blanco batting leadoff as he did his job. It is laughable that he was on base 3 of 5 PA's and did not figure in any scoring.
Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 5. BA= .248. Cutch got a heartwarming ovation from the fans and the Pirates pitcher got boo'd for almost hitting him with a pitch. Cutch left 6 runners stranded. Giants batters failed to drive in a total of 31 runners. That is mind-boggling! Their leadoff hitter reached base in 6 of the 9 innings. Only 1 scored.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 K. ERA= 4.57. Reality may be starting to sink in for some of the Giants younger pitchers. Bobby might want to look up Scott Feldman's number in his rolodex(I don't think anyone keeps rolodex's anymore, but you get the idea).
Jose Valdez RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 18.00. I remember an old saying from playground days: "The faster they come in, the faster they go out." Valdez has a big fastball, but apparently not much else and Josh Bell turned one around for a monster shot into the bushes in front of the Batter's Eye in CF. This was not Valdez' MLB debut as he has pitched for the Angels, Tigers and Padres without a lot of success.
