Game Wrap 9/3/2019: Cardinals 1 Giants 0

Dereck Rodriguez pitched a darn good game but two singles by Mike Yastrzemski were the only hits for the offense.  Key Lines:

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.15.  As good as this line looks, DRod actually suffered from bad BABIP luck as 2 of the 5 hits he allowed came in the first inning, a deflected IF single and a squibber that started out heading toward the 1B dugout then made a full 90 degree turn toward the field and into fair territory.  By the time the Giants could see it was going to be a fair ball, it was too late to make a play.  I don't know if this is a corner turn for Young Dereck, but there is no reason to not let him pitch through September and see if he might be an option for a 5'th Starter/Swingman role next season.

********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries to get the Giants back in the Win column tomorrow facing RHP Michael Wacha.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants added IF Corban Joseph to the active roster.  He's played mainly 2B in his career, but Bochy's plan is to have him play 3B when Longo needs a rest.  Oh, and Joseph has a career BA of .197.

*********************************************************************************

Johnny Cueto's rehab suffered a setback due to a stiff back.  I'm sure this has nothing to do with the Giants falling out of contention for a playoff berth.

Down on the Farm: 9/2/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats doubled the score on the El Paso Chihuahuas 8-4:

Jacob Heyward LF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .400.
Ronnie Freeman C- 4 for 4, 3B.  BA= .295.
Ryan Howard 3B/SS- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .235.
Zach Houchins 1B/3B- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .500.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Williams Jerez LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.86.
Melvin Adon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 13.94.

Quite a few additions from AA Richmond.  The River Cats are in the PCL playoffs with the first round against A's affiliate Las Vegas.  The playoff roster will be quite different from the one that got them there due to September callups for players on the 40 man roster.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Bowie Baysox 7-1:

Bryce Johnson RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .243.
Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .216.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4, HR(3), SB(2).  BA= .242.
Matt Winn 1B- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .122.
Brandon Van Horn 3B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .185.
Jose Layer LF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .143.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.45.
Alfred Gutierrez RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 4.09.

Heliot Ramos closes out his season on a triumphant note with a full stat line and a tape-measure HR. Very respectable showing for a 19 yo in a very tough environment for hitters.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants pounded the Stockton Ports 7-1:

Diego Rincones DH- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .247.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .262.
Courtney Hawkins CF- 1 for 4, HR(21).  BA= .256.
Heath Quinn RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(5).  BA= .289.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .255.
Tristan Beck RHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.27.

Tristan Beck continues to impress since coming to the Giants organization from the Braves in the Melancon trade. Oh, and I think this means the Giants make the Cal League playoffs.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Columbia Fireflies 6-5:

Jacob Gonzalez 1B- 3 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .241.

4 multi-hit games out of his last 6 for Jacob.  I believe the GJ's are in the SAL playoffs.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Eugene Emeralds topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-1:

Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .207.
Nick Avila RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

I believe the Volcanoes are in the NWL playoffs by virtue of winning the first half of their division. Again, a much different team now.

Game Wrap 9/2/2019: Cardinals 3 Giants 1

Mauricio Dubon had a breakout game.  Unfortunately that was pretty much the only bright spot in the first game of a 7-game road trip against the Cards and Dodgers.  Ugh!  Key Lines:

Mauricio Dubon 2B- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .267.  Well, we know Dubon can turn on a hanging breaking ball on the inner half and drive it.  Both of his XBH's were on that type of pitch.  And this kid sure looks good in a baseball uniform!

Tyler Beede RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.61.  Take out the first 2 batters of the game and his line is 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  Still not great but better.  Maybe the Driveline guys can fix him over the winter?

*********************************************************************************

The Loss drops the Giants 8 games off the pace in the Wild Card race.  Maybe it's time to stop tracking that?

*********************************************************************************

Dereck Rodriguez gets the start tomorrow facing RHP Jack Flaherty.

*********************************************************************************

RHP Kyle Barraclough and LHP Andrew Suarez were added to the Active Roster prior to the game.

Down on the Farm: 9/1/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats quieted the El Paso Chihuahuas 5-0:

Jacob Heyward LF- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .500.
Levi Michael 2B- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .251.
Carlos Navas RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.08.
Pat Venditte RHP/LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.85.
Sam Selman LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.06.
Dan Winkler RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.64.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Bowie Baysox 2-1:

Johneshwy Fargas RF- 1 for 4, SB(50).  BA= .249.
Joey Bart C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .316.
Carlos Sano RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Cooper Casad RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Garrett Williams LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.60.

Someone asked whether I was surprised by Joey Bart's success in AA:  1.  Almost nothing that happens in this small a sample size should be surprising.  2.  Joey Bart is a really good player who is still my #1 Giants prospect.  So no, I am not surprised.  I guess a more interesting question to me is if between this small sample and if he does well in another small sample in the Arizona Fall League, if he starts next year in AA or if he does the Buster Posey and goes straight to AAA for his second full pro season?  Corollary: What is the Giants ETA for Joey Bart and how are they going to finesse playing time for him and Buster Posey?

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants sank the Stockton Ports 6-2:

Courtney Hawkins CF- 1 for 4, HR(20).  BA= .256.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .251.
Fabian Pena C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .222.
Aaron Bond LF- 1 for 2, 2 SF.  BA= .300.
Casey Meisner RHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.17.
Olbis Parra RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.12.
Frank Rubio RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.89.

*********************************************************************************

A Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Columbia Fireflies 3-2:

Frankie Tostado LF- 1 for 1, HR(18), 3 BB.  BA= .259.
Preston White RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.47.
Seth Corry LHP- 3.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.76.
Matt Seelinger RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.79.
Bryce Tucker LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.17.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season Eugene Emeralds outscored the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 10-7(10 innings):

Armani Smith RF- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .307.
Kwan Adkins CF- 1 for 3, HR(4), Sac, HBP.  BA= .276.
Harrison Freed LF- 1 for 4, HR(6), BB.  BA= .242.
Beicker Mendoza DH- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .267.

Game Wrap 9/1/2019: Padres 8 Giants 4

2-run HR's by Kevin Pillar and Evan Longoria were not enough to overcome one of those starts by Jeff Samardzija.  Key Lines:

Dovovan Solano 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .339.   The BABIP is unsustainable but Solano is keeping the ball off the ground(GO/AO= 0.71) and seeing more Pitches/PA(4.0) than he has in his career.  Kruk commented on how he is grinding out AB's.  His LD%(35.5) and Hard%(38.8) are also the highest of his career so the BABIP is not a complete fluke.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 4, HR(20).  BA= .260.  Pillar reaches 20 HR's and is enjoying the peak year of his career so far, set to top his career high in multiple offensive categories.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 4, HR(18).  BA= .266.  Longo is hitting .340 in the second half.  Q for those of you favoring trading Longo over the winter:  Who do you see taking his place at the hot corner next season?  Casual reminder Giants only pay about $13 M AAV on Longo's salary and they are about $90 M under the CBT threshold for next season even with his contract on the books.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.61.  One of those games.  It looked like Shark had settled down after giving up 3 runs in the first 2 innings, but he went 3B/GO/2B/BB.  Bochy brought in Fernando Abad to face the LH batting Ty France who hit one into the arcade to put this game away.  Shark is kind of like a RHP version of Barry Zito who gets a lot of QS's but when he doesn't, he gives up so many Runs and HR's that the bad games tend to be the ones you remember.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants remain 7 games behind in the Wild Card race, but with another less game to make up the difference.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants now hit the road for a Labor Day day game in St Louis with Tyler Beede facing veteran Adam Wainwright.

*********************************************************************************

Pablo Sandoval was activated from the IL for one game on roster expansion day for one last PA before going under the knife for TJ surgery.  He got a nice ovation coming off the field.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants also called up C/1B/LF Aramis Garcia who started at 1B, LF/1B Chris Shaw, LHP Conner Menez and RHP Burch Smith.

*********************************************************************************

Reyes Moronta tore his labrum on the pitch last night that caused him to fall to the ground in pain.  It will likely require surgery. The usual recovery time from labrum surgery is 1-1.5 years with variable outcomes even after full healing.

Down on the Farm: 8/31/2019

AAA  El Paso Chihuahuas blanked the Sacramento River Cats 3-0:

Johnny Cueto RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.61.

Well, Johnny Cueto looks ready.  Unfortunately it's probably at least a week too late to make a difference in the Wild Card race.  Do you activate him to give him a head start on next season or shut him down and save whatever he has left in the arm for next season?

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Bowie Baysox 3-2:

Joey Bart C- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .307.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.04.
Dylan Davis RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 4/1.  ERA= 0.00.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.66.

I've seen talk of promoting Joey Bart to Sacramento for the PCL playoffs.  Dylan Davis  has a successful AA debut as a pitcher.  He had a 7.15 ERA in Augusta but had just one really bad appearance, 6 ER in 0.1 IP on 8/11.  He's 26 yo so still has time to make it as a MLB RP.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports pounded the San Jose Giants 12-5:

Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .262.
David Villar 3B- 1 for 4, SF.  BA= .259.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .248.

Manuel Geraldo has hit .293 in the second half after hitting just .194 in the first half.  That has been the pattern pretty much throughout his pro career.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets topped the Columbia Fireflies 5-4:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, 2 SB(4).  BA= .258.
Logan Wyatt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .255.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 11 K's.  ERA= 1.55.

The Big Kid From Taiwan has 39 K's and 7 BB's in 29 IP since his trade to the Giants organization.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes outlasted the Eugene Emeralds 4-3(10 innings):

Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .185.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO- 5/0.  ERA= 0.00.
Conner Nurse RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO- 7/1.  ERA= 5.26.

Caleb Kilian moves up to his appropriate level and has a successful debut.  I'm bullish on him despite his 8'th round draft pedigree based on his scouting report and video.  The frame looks like it's still projectable despite being a college draftee.

Game Wrap 8/31/2019: Padres 4 Giants 1

The Giants could not capitalize on a strong start by rookie Logan Webb as an exhausted bullpen collapsed both literally and figuratively.  Key Lines:

Austin Slater RF- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .281.  Slater homered in the first inning to give the Giants their only run and a lead that held up into the 6'th inning.  Slater is in a mini-slump hitting just .143 over his last 7 games, 14 AB's.

Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 3.52.  One out short of a Quality Start with dominant peripherals.  Webb has a 16/4 K/BB in 3 MLB starts, 15.1 IP with a GB/FB of 17/7.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 0.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.86.  Moronta entered the game after Webb allowed a double and single with 2 outs in the 6'th.  On a 2-0 count to his first batter, Luis Urias, he threw a 98 MPH FB and immediately grabbed his right arm and fell to the ground in obvious pain.  He stayed down for several minutes and we then helped off the field with the trainer supporting his right arm.  After the game, Bruce Bochy said it was a shoulder strain and he will undergo an MRI today.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO- 4/0.  ERA= 2.70.  More groundball goodness from the rookie Rogers.  Rogers ended up walking the batter he inherited from Reyes Moronta but Moronta was charged with the BB.  After that it as 4 consecutive GB outs.

Tony Watson and Will Smith gave up 1 and 2 runs respectively in the 8'th and 9'th innings as the Giants offense failed to add on after Slater's first inning bomb.  This is what happens when you rely on the bullpen to pick up a bunch of five and dive SP's for a full season then deplete it at the trade deadline.  Will Smith might have been a bit upset by his friend's earlier injury too.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants remain 7 games out of the Wild Card race with 1 less game to make it up.

********************************************************************************

Jeff Samardzija and Tyler Beede flip their rotation spots with Shark pitching the 4-game series finale today against LHP Eric Lauer.
