So, every recent mock draft has the same first 3 picks in the draft: 1. Tigers- RHP Casey Mize. 2. Giants- C Joey Bart. 3. Phillies- 3B Alec Bohm. Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs, who seems to have some of the better scouting connections and famously predicted the Giants would draft Christian Arroyo, says that's how it's probably going to go, but with some intrigue creeping in. It seems the Tigers are keeping their options open and are scouting several other players with Joey Bart jumping ahead of the Giants pick a real possibility. The Giants are rumored to be in on HS RHP Cole Winn who reportedly would sign a significantly under-slot deal freeing up money to sign more expensive talent later in the draft. Word is the Giants still want Bart at #2. If the Tigers take him instead of Mize, the back up plan for the Giants is not Mize, but Winn.
So what's going on here? Conventional wisdom says the only thing that would make the Tigers pass on Casey Mize is a scary medical report. That's not necessarily true, according to Kiley. Apparently the wildcard in all of this is the Phillies who are believed to be willing to punt the rest of their draft to go over slot on the player they really want, which would be Mize. This may be causing Mize to up his bonus demands with the Tigers to well above slot, which the Tigers may not want to do and the Giants definitely don't.

So, who is Cole Winn? I honestly don't recall whether I already profiled him in my draft series and don't feel like combing through the archives to see. Winn is a HS senior originally from Colorado who transferred to Orange Lutheran HS in SoCal to get exposed to better competition. He's got a nice frame at 6'2", 180 lbs that has some room to add muscle, though not a lot. He throws a low-mid 90's FB. He's turned a slurvy curve into 2 distinct pitches with bite, a curve and a slider. He also has a decent changeup but does not use it much because high school. The delivery is clean with some effort. Despite the effort, what sets him apart from other HS pitchers is the command of at least 3 pitches. Overall, he's a respectable first round draft pick, but with nothing that makes you stop and say, "OMG! I have to have this kid!"

So, the smart way for the Giants to go would be the respectable first round pick with the underslot bonus and use the money saved to go after better players later in the draft, right? Well, not necessarily. As ogc has preached until he is figuratively blue in the face, about 70% of the value of the draft is generally found in the first round and about 70% of the first round value is found in the top half or even top 10 picks. The probability of drafting an impact player in the top 5 or 10 picks quickly degrades from around 50% to no more that about 10% by round 2 and keeps on going down after that. It probably makes more sense based on historical evidence to take that almost mythical Best Player Available with your high pick, pay him most of your bonus pool and punt the rest of the draft!
So, if Casey Mize demands too much from the Tigers and falls to #2, why not just take him? Well, whether it makes sense or not, the Giants probably don't want to effectively give up on their 2'nd round pick to go overslot for Mize. But what if they just called his bluff, drafted him at #2 and offered him $6.5 M which is approximately $1 M underslot? It's not like he's going to go back to school and lose what little leverage he has. My theory is the Giants place more value on character than most organizations and feel like a guy who plays those kinds of bonus demand games might not be the type of guy they want in the organization.

My other theory is that there may be people, namely Dick Tidrow, in the Giants organization who genuinely have Cole Winn at the top of their draft board. Tidrow almost exclusively scouts pitchers and likely still has a lot of influence over which ones they draft. He is famous for going his own way against the industry consensus. Scouting Director John Barr is clearly more comfortable scouting and drafting hitters. My theory is Barr wants Joey Bart and Tidrow wants Winn. The deal they have worked out is that Bart will be the pick if he's there, but Winn rather than Mize or Alec Bohm or another hitter is Plan B.

It's also possible that all of this is just bluffing and misdirection to try to squeeze a few hundred K out of the signing bonuses one way or the other and the draft will fall exactly as predicted by the consensus. That seems to actually be the most likely outcome.

Covechatter has done an exhaustive study of top 10 draft picks. Historically, the safest, most productive picks in the top 5 and top 10 are college hitters and it's not really close. This would suggest that if the Joey Bart goes to the Tigers at #1, the Giants should fall back to Alec Bohm or Nick Madrigal or Travis Swaggerty. Word from Kiley is that's not going to happen and the fallback is definitely Winn.

Much as I believe in Covechatter's analysis, part of me realizes that pitching is very thin in the organization. The Giants have drafted a lot of high ceiling arms with severe control issues in the belief they can correct those issues and develop them into solid MLB pitchers. So far, that has not worked out. The organization is in almost desperate need of re-stocking the farm system with serious pitching prospects. I am A-OK with them drafting Joey Bart at #2 overall, but after that I would be very happy if they took pitchers with the next 6 or 7 picks or even the rest of the top 10! If they take Cole Winn at #2, I would be happy if they use the extra slot money and keep right on drafting HS pitching through at least round 3 then switch to college pitching for at least 3-4 rounds after that. If they came away from the draft with a re-stocked store of pitching prospects I would consider it a success.

Game Wrap 6/2/2018: Giants 2 Phillies 0
Andrew Suarez turned in his strongest start of his young MLB career and combined with Tony Watson and Hunter Strickland for the Giants second consecutive shutout win. Key Lines:
Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .289. Joe Panik has now reached base 6 times in 9 PA's since coming off the DL. He scored both Giants runs tonight. The first run of the game, in the 6'th inning, came when Panik broke for home on a contact play and juuuuust slid under the tag on the Fielder's Choice. He added an insurance run in the 8'th inning after taking the extra base on a soft liner single to CF by Brandon Crawford. Andrew McCutchen delivered the Sac Fly.
Andrew McCutchen RF- 0 for 3, SF. BA= .243. Cutch drove in both runs on a FC and SF. He also went a loooong way to track down a drive in Triples Alley to save a run in the 3'rd inning.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 12/3. ERA= 4.74. I've figured that if Suarez could get through the first inning unscathed, he could pitch a shutout. He did just that tonight, at least for 7 innings which is more than good enough. This should be a huge confidence booster for the kid. Suarez combined a pinpoint FB that reached 94 MPH and a darting curveball to dominate the Phillies.
Tony Watson LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.33. Watson needed just 6 pitches to get through the 8'th inning with the shutout intact.
Hunter Strickland RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(12). ERA= 2.42. Is it just me, or has Strick kicked his game up a notch since Mark Melancon came off the DL? He just pounded the fastball tonight and when he did unleash a backfoot slide piece on Odubel Herrera, it was a 12-6 bad boy that Herrera looked like he had never seen before.

Chris Stratton pitched 6 dominant innings of shutout ball and the bullpen completed the combined shutout to get the Giants off to a winning start to their weekend series and homestand. Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 0 for 1. BA= .307. Belt left the game early with an acute gastrointestinal illness. He should bounce back quickly from that.
Chris Stratton RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 4.50. This is the big news of the game. Stratton had been scuffling since coming off paternity leave on April 28. Today's game was more like the the Stratton we saw last year and early this season. Having him back in form would be a huge boost to a beleaguered rotation.

His pitches were crisp and he was in complete command. He looked like he couldn't wait to throw the next pitch. Strikeout, comebacker, flyout to CF. Game over!

Late word on Brandon Belt is he was taken to the hospital for evaluation of possible appendicitis. If that proved to be the diagnosis and if he requires surgery, he could be out for awhile, which would be a blow to the lineup and create more moving parts on the roster. Pablo Sandoval would likely get the most innings at 1B with Kelby Tomlinson, who just got sent down to make room for Joe Panik, or Alen Hanson getting called up to be the reserve MI.
Hunter Pence is slated to come off the DL tomorrow. We'll see what corresponding roster move is made.
Jose Valdez was DFA'd from the 40 man roster to make room for Mark Melancon coming off the 60 day DL. The Giants had 13 pitchers on the 25 man roster as of tonight with 2 reserve OF's and Pablo Sandoval as the only reserve IF. If that proved to be the diagnosis and if he requires surgery, he could be out for awhile, which would be a blow to the lineup and create more moving parts on the roster. Pablo Sandoval would likely get the most innings at 1B with Kelby Tomlinson, who just got sent down to make room for Joe Panik, or Alen Hanson getting called up to be the reserve MI.
Hunter Pence is slated to come off the DL tomorrow. We'll see what corresponding roster move is made.
Jose Valdez was DFA'd from the 40 man roster to make room for Mark Melancon coming off the 60 day DL. The Giants had 13 pitchers on the 25 man roster as of tonight with 2 reserve OF's and Pablo Sandoval as the only reserve IF. Bruce Bochy indicated Joe Panik would play SS if Brandon Crawford couldn't and Pablo is taking some grounders at the position just in case. Now THAT would be worth the price of admission to see!
Scouting the Draft: 2017 Draft Review
Pretty much all 2017 draftees have now played at least 2 months of pro ball. Not a big sample size, but enough to give a first impression of who did well and who didn't in the draft. Here's the breakdown of the first round and where each first round prospect is in their development. The grades are just for fun and based only on performance up to this point.
1. Twins: Royce Lewis, SS/OF, HS. 2017: Rookie- .271/.390/.414, 3 HR, 15 SB. Low A- .296/.363/.394, 1 HR, 3 SB. 2018: Low A- .316/.362/.437, 3 HR, 15 SB. Royce Lewis might be the most tooled up player from the 2017 draft and he's backing that up with excellent stats on the field. Grade A.
2. Reds: Hunter Greene, RHP, HS. 2017: Rookie- 0-1, 12.46, 4.1 IP, 1 BB, 6 K's. 2018: Low A- 0-3, 7.18, 26.1 IP, 14 BB, 36 K, GO/AO= 1.11. 2-way HS player who is focusing exclusively on pitching. The K's look promising, but the command is a work in progress as you might expect for a HS talent. Grade C.
3. Padres: Mackenzie Gore, LHP, HS. 2017: Rookie- 0-1, 1.27, 21.1 IP, 7 BB, 34 K. 2018: Low A: 0-1, 10.13, 8 IP, 2 BB, 10 K's. Generally rated as the most polished HS pitcher in the draft and the likely fastest mover. Excellent rookie league results in 2017. Missed close to a month this season due to a blister issue. Grade C.

A+- 2-1, 2.12, 17.0 IP, 1 BB, 19 K's. 2-way college player who is trying to carry that into the pros with a supportive organization. Wish him the best with that, but it looks like his primary future is on the mound and he's excelling at pitching so far. Grade A.

Competing at a high level for his first full pro season. Has had some hiccup starts but several outstanding QS's. Grade A-.
6. A's: Austin Beck, OF, HS. 2017: Rookie- .211/.293/.349, 2 HR, 7 SB. 2018: Low A- .269/.311/.341, HR, 3 SB. Beck took on serious helium leading up to the draft then fell back a bit. The A's bit and now have a project on their hands. Disappointing rookie league season. Better so far in Low A in a challenging environment for hitters, although currently in a slump. Still has a high ceiling because of his tools, but serious bust potential if the bat does not develop. Not a typical A's draft pick and it may end up biting them. Grade D.
7. D'Backs: Pavin Smith, 1B, College(Virginia). 2017: SS- .318/.401/.415, 15 2B, 0 HR, 24 K, 27 BB. 2018: A+- .218/.328/.364, 5 HR, 24 K, 26 BB. College 1B which means he has to hit like crazy to make it. Love the K/BB, but the power is disappointing so far. Grade C.
8. Phillies: Adam Haseley, OF, College(Virginia). 2017: 3 levels- .284/.357/.405, 3 HR, 6 SB. 2018: A+- .276/.322/.391, 3 HR, 5 SB. 2017's version of Andrew Benintendi. Results so far not as promising although he's hitting .324 over his last 10 games. Grade B.
9. Brewers: Keston Hiura, 2B, College(UC Irvine). 2017: 2 levels: .371/.422/.611, 4 HR, 2 SB. 2018: A+- .320/382/.529, 7 HR, 4 SB. Top hit tool in the draft. If he keeps this up, nobody will care if he plays 2B or 1B or DH's. Grade A.
10. Angels: Jo Adell, OF, HS. 2017: 2 levels- .325/.376/.532. 2018: Low A- .326/.398/.611, 6 HR, 4 SB, 95 AB. A+- .184/.225/.474, 3 HR, 2 SB, 38 AB. Extremely young for the level after a quick promotion from Low A ball. Saw him in person out at San Manuel Stadium. Definitely a prospect to dream on. Grade A.
11. White Sox: Jake Burger, 3B, College(Missouri St). 2017: 2 levels- .263/.336/.412, 5 HR. Touted as a great bat/bad body prospect. Mediocre pro debut. Has not played this year due to a torn Achilles tendon. Grade D.
12. Pirates: Shane Baz, RHP, HS. 2017: Rookie- 0-3, 3.80, 23.2 IP, 14 BB, 19 K. 2018: Has not played. Maybe in extended spring training and we'll see him in short season ball? Grade D.
13. Marlins: Trevor Rogers, LHP, HS. 2018: Low A 0-1, 12.00, 6 IP, 3 BB, 9 K's. For the record, I love Rogers upside, but knew he was raw and would be a project. Did not make his pro debut until 5/22/2018. Grade Incomplete. C based on extremely small sample.
14. Royals: Nick Pratto, 1B, HS. 2017: Rookie- .247/.330/.414, 4 HR, 10 SB. 2018: Low A- .262/.306/.426, 7 HR, 6 SB. Scouts loved the bat. I was skeptical. The bat may still eventually play and the SB's are surprising for a guy who seems stuck at 1B defensively. Grade C.
15. Astros: JB Bukauskas RHP, College(North Carolina). 2017: 2 levels- 0-0, 2.70, 10 IP, 5 BB, 9 K's. 2018: Low A- 0-2, 7.94, 5.2 IP, 4 BB, 7 K's. Smallish college SP whose stuff played up. Considered to have a high floor. Currently on the DL. I am not sure why. Grade D.
16. Yankees: Clarke Schmidt, RHP, College(South Carolina). Has not made his pro debut. Schmidt's college career was cut short by TJ surgery. Yanks were willing to wait. Personally I am not impressed enough with his upside to wait and take the risk. I would not have made this pick mid-first round. Grade- Incomplete.
17. Mariners: Evan White, 1B, College(Kentucky). 2017: SS- .277/.345/.532, 3 HR. 2018: A+- .289/.363/.416. Athletic first baseman who has been compared to Cody Belllinger and is believed to be capable of playing OF, even CF! Numbers so far are good, not great. Grade B.
18. Tigers: Alex Faedo, RHP, College(Florida). 2018: A+- 1-4, 3.47, 49.1 IP, 11 BB, 42 K. Some preseason rankings had him as the #1 overall prospect in the 2017 draft. Stock slipped a bit during his junior season which was actually pretty solid, but unspectacular. Initial pro numbers are similar. Grade B.
19. Giants: Heliot Ramos, OF, HS. 2017: Rookie- .348/.404/.645, 6 HR, 10 SB. 2018: Low A- .224//302/.365, 4 HR, 1 SB. Got off to a tremendous start in rookie ball. Not unexpectedly struggling in a challenging environment in his first full pro season. Has shown flashes and is hitting .270 over his last 10 games. Grade C+.
20. Mets: David Peterson, LHP, College(Oregon). 2017: SS- 0-0, 2.45, 3.2 IP, 1 BB, 6 K's. 2018: Low A- 1-3, 2.03, 44.1 IP, 11 BB, 39 K, GO/AO= 2.67. Good but not great numbers with a conservative placement for a college pitcher from a major conference. Grade B-.

Talented LHP who got kicked off his college team for a series of team rule violations. Nationals took a chance on him presumably because his agent, Scott Boras, is tight with Nationals management/ownership. Nats sent him home from spring camp. No clear what his current status is. Grade F.
26. Rangers: Bubba Thompson, OF, HS. 2017: Rookie- .257/.317/.434, 3 HR, 5 SB. 2018: Low A- .279/.333/.492, 2 HR, 5 SB. Athletic HS OF, comparable to Heliot Ramos but over 1 year older. Fairly strong numbers in a pitcher-friendly league. Grade B.

Austin Slater just keeps on hitting: .358 for April, .383 for May. Does Pence's 0 for 5 impact the Giants roster decisionmaking? IMO, the Giants starting OF by no later than Opening Day of next year needs to be Mac Williamson in LF, Steven Duggar in CF and Austin Slater in RF. Maybe switch Mac and Slater? This was Conner Menez' second AAA start and much improved from the 4 runs in 4 IP on 4/12/2018.
