Trevor McDonald was perfect through 3 innings then inexplicably fell apart in the 4'th inning allowing 7 runs in what was ultimately a 9-run inning, a disaster inning if there ever was one. Key Lines:
The lineup managed 7 hits and 3 walks with Luis Arraez 2B the only Giant with 2 hits.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.76. The 4'th inning was one of the strangest I've ever seen. How does a team score 7 runs 3 hits and a walk? The inning goes HBP, HBP(challenged, upheld), fly out, infield single(bases now loaded), walk, double, fielder's choice(run scored, no outs recorded), Strike Out, groundball single, pitching change(Ryan Borucki LHP replaces Trevor McDonald), HBP, Double, infield single/error(Adames), Strikeout. That's how.
It seemed like a mistake at the time but in retrospect, Arraez' decision to try for an out at home on a play he could have easily gotten an out at first looms large. The next batter struck out and that would have ended the inning at 4-0 an the Giants still in the game. Instead, it led to 5 more runs and an insurmountable 9-0 White Sox lead.
As to what caused McDonald's meltdown, we've seen several minor league pitchers fall apart when having to pitch out of the stretch after a strong start to a game. Is that what happened here?
As it stands, there are only 3 MLB teams with worse records than the Giants as we close in on the 1/3 mark of the season. They have lost 4 games in a row.

ReplyDeleteThey may not be the worst team recordwise but, to me this is the worst team in baseball and historically bad team for the franchise. Fans need to stop spending money on this awful product.
ReplyDeleteYou can just go so long providing no run support before it'll wear on even the best starters. I got tired by the fourth inning of watching such an ineffective offense, especially Schmitt swinging once again at pitches two feet off the plate. Rodriguez is painful to watch as a catcher, but man can he hit!
ReplyDeleteYou knew that, despite the hype, McDonald was going to have clunkers..but that was crazy.....but..that is the 2026 SF Giants..absurd, cursed, bad and never putting it all together......And there's is just no way, with the sub standard and/or inconsistent talent that Posey has put in place for THIS YEAR as well as the unready and marginal talent being called up to play, that I can see it getting any better....Doesn't stop me from hoping that Bericoto or the next man up will be successful and the team will somehow get out of this funk but what a chore to watch!!

Hype? For McDonald? I have posted several times about how I like him as a prospect and think his extreme groundball tendency is an underrated commodity, but I don't think he's been hyped. If anything he's flown under the radar.

DeleteFor me, I am a fan of the game of baseball. Yes, I would be a happier guy if the Giants were playing well.This has been a disatrous season. However, I will continue to go to games and to listen to the games on the radio (rarely watch games on the telly). I enjoy going to the games and almost always find something compelling happens at the ballpark. I have been a Giant fan for around 55 years. When a groundball gets hit to SS I think about how one of these SSs; Hal Lanier, Chris Speier, Royce Clayton, Omar Vizquel, Richie Aurilia and Brandon Crawford would field the ball.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, regarding boycotting the team, it seems to me that many of the attendees at the park are there for the fiesta and do not watch the game closely. I am always amazed at the money being spent at the game on food, drink and souvenirs. SF Giants ownership are making money despite the performance on the field.
The 9-run inning was actually really interesting in an awful sort of way. Then there was the 8'th inning where all the frat boys in the house took off their shirts and waved them around. That was kind of fun. Hope it doesn't get to be too much of a thing though......unless the women start doing it too! (Just kidding there).
