The Giants hitting collapsed for the umpteenth time this season and hung a 1-0 loss on Robbie Ray who got Cained? Webbed? Rayed? Whatever. Key Lines:
Christian Koss 3B- 2 for 4. BA= .253. Once again, Christian Koss was the only Giants batter to get more than one hit and he ended up with 2 of the Giants 4 hits. Melvin had enough confidence in him to bat him leadoff and he got the job done. It's just that it's doesn't do a leadoff batter any good to get on base if the 2, 3, 4 and 5 hitters go a combined 0 for 14 with one walk.
Brett Wisely 2B- 1 for 3. BA= .158. There was no shortage of frustrating plays in this game but this was probably the most frustrating of all, maybe of the whole season. Wisely led off the 6'th with a single. Koss followed with another soft single putting runners at first and second. Then White Sox starter Adrian Houser inexplicably balked them to 2'nd and 3'rd, still with no outs and Rafael Devers at the plate. Devers took an ugly looking swing at a breaking ball for strike 3......and Wisely got back-picked off third by the catcher. So, instead of still having runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with less than 2 outs it was a runner at 2B with 2 outs and you know what happened next. This was Wisely's second pick-off in 2 games. But it's not all on Wisely as Dever's AB just didn't look good at all.
And what kind of a contagious hitting disease is going on when Buster goes out and gets one of the top 10-15 hitters in the game and he promptly goes stone cold at the plate? Devers line for his last 7 games is .259/.355/.519 which is pretty good but his overall line in 11 games with the Giants is .233/.327/.419. After his 3 for 4 game on Sunday, it's gone 1 for 8, BB in two games since against the White Sox.
I will say the bad luck narrative is still alive and well as Giants hitters had 7 exit velocities of 100+ MPH, none of which went for hits. The loudest out was by Jung Hoo Lee who hit an absolute rocket directly over Austin Slater's head in RF which he barely got turned around on in time to catch it right at the top of the wall.
Robbie Ray LHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, 7/2 GO/AO. ERA= 2.75. Not much to say about this except you can't pitch much better and that's frustrating.
Justin Verlander RHP tries to salvage series win tomorrow facing Scott Cannon RHP and this one is not a gimme by any stretch.
When is Chapman coming back?
ReplyDeleteI don’t know, Doc … it was an ugly swing by Devers, but it was still strike three … Wisely had no real reason to be leaning so much towards home. It was a mental mistake on his part, the second in two games. And shouldn’t a good third base coach be anticipating the potential of a back-pick?
ReplyDeleteOh, I am in no way exonerating Wisely, but he was only half of the double-disaster. A hitter of Devers caliber has to make contact somewhere in that AB and he didn't even have a healthy looking swing.
DeleteI'm waiting for Buster to get fed up enough to intervene and fire Matt Williams and Pat Burrell to send Melvin a message. It won't magically make things better but, it will put Melvin on notice that this is unacceptable.
DeleteAt some point someone needs to get fired from this oblivious coaching staff. This is embarrassing. Shake up needed asap
ReplyDeleteMissed watching the game, followed some it on my app. Adrian Houser - might be a trade piece the Giants look at? His ERA in 7 starts for the White Sox is 1.90, surprising since he didn't pitch well in 2024. Robbie Ray -this is the 2nd game he was the losing pitcher in a 1-0 game. His record is 8 wins -3 losses. Hope it doesn't cost him making the all star game. The baserunning hasn't been good. According to article by Maria Guarado the Giants have run into 29 outs on the bases, 5th most in MLB. I'm sorry but I'm more upset and concerned with their hitters poor approaches with RISP then the hitting coaches. My reaction sometimes watching their ABS is they should learn from watching Willmer Flores professional abs. Maybe the FO need to look at bringing in more contact hitters similar to a Donovan Solano. My biggest concern with the position players is Jung Hu Lee. His batting average is on a steady decline, haven't seen him hit the ball hard thus month. Baseball is unpredictable so we'll see what happens.
ReplyDeleteRe. Houser: Yes, in the hitter's defense I remarked after the first inning that this pitcher had some serious sink on his pitches. I knew he was going to be tough just from his pitch movement. You will be slightly encouraged to know the hardest hit ball of the day was off Jung Hoo Lee's bat. But yes, his trend has been very concerning.
DeleteThe team is putting me at a loss for words.
ReplyDelete1st and 2nd with none out. A little tricky. Try to get a hit. At least move the runners over.
ReplyDelete2nd and 3rd with none out? Put the ball in play. Get one run, at least.
For Devers, THAT'S THE REASON WHY YOU WERE BROUGHT HERE!! GET THE RUNNERS IN!
Sheesh, this is beyond frustrating.
Is today a "MUST WIN"?
ReplyDeleteOr is it never a must in MLB until facing elimination?
After losing 4 of 5 to teams they should beat, this is the schedule until the All-Star break:
1 game @ CWS
4 games @ AZ
3 games @ A's (Sacramento, personally going to Sunday's game, a Fathers' Day present!)
3 games with Philly @ home
3 games with the "co-Best Team in Baseball" @ home. Giants might have Chapman back.
The 14 games are not the end-of-the-world, but after the break the Giants have 6 on the road in Canada and Atlanta, then 6 of 9 games with the Mets.
Let's hope Verlander gets his "stuff" together today!
After projecting him to be in today's lineup, Casey Schmitt was scratched again for SF Giants in series finale vs. White Sox according to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle. A previous version of this article was written when it was announced he would be in the lineup.
