Game Wrap 6/18/2025: Guardians 4 Giants 2

A mistake fastball over the heart of the plate from Justin Verlander on and 0-2 count in the fourth inning was the difference in this game as the Giants lineup could not overcome the resulting 4-0 lead.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .284.  Ramos followed a 2-out single by Patrick Bailey with blast deep into the stands in LF.  Up to that point, Guardians SP L. T. Allen LHP befuddled the Giants lineup with a mix of soft stuff.  After Ramos' homer, the Giants appeared to be very much back in the game but failed to build on that change in momentum.

Justin Verlander RHP- 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, ER, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.45.  I don't think anyone expected Verlander to get deep into the game coming off the IL.  Other than the one horrible pitch.

The Bullpen shut it down for 4.1 IP but the damage was done.

Logan Webb RHP tries to prevent a series sweep by the Guardians this afternoon against Gavin Williams RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.89 but 2.89 over his last 7 starts.

  1. Just throw a scrub lefty and the giants will make him look like a cy young front runner every time. Embarrassing

    1. Giants are 24th in BA (.233) and SLG (.375), 22nd in OPS (.687) and HRs.

  2. Bob Melvin is on the hot seat going forward, anything short of a playoff appearance will likely mean a managerial vacancy. The cold hitting can't continue much longer or Pat Burrell will be scapegoated.

  3. If there is something wrong, very wrong with the Giants, this is it:
    Schmitt .218
    Bailey .193
    Adames .207
    Koss .217
    Knizner .095
    Porter .143
    Johnson .222
    Encarncion .136
    Fitzgerald .137 (last 10 games)

The best pitching in baseball can't overcome having a lineup with only 3 everyday players batting above .260 and one of them usually platoons.
Devers will help but without Chapman (another sub .250 hitter but he makes up for it in other areas) and some semblance of consistent hitting, the Giants struggle to play .500 baseball: 13-14 in May, 9-7 in June.

  4. 17 of 30 MLB teams are above .500, another 3 are within 1 win of .500, and 2 more are just 2 games under .500.
In the AL only 3 teams are out of the race, which includes Baltimore an early supposed contender. Could they get back into it and leave just the A's and White Sox out?
In the NL, 5 teams are out of the race, which includes Atlanta also an early supposed contender. Just 6 games under .500, could the Braves get back into the mix, leaving 4 teams looking at 2026.
This is one reason that trading Devers so early was a surprise: the Red Sox are fully in the race, can Harrison and Hicks do more to get them "in" than an All Star DH?
Google AI says "the perception of Devers as a clubhouse distraction and his perceived shortcomings as a leader were contributing factors in the Red Sox's decision to trade him."

  5. Giants try and Jack every pitch. What happened to going the other way with a pitch? I think Pat the bat needs to go. System wide they don't seem to develop hitters or baserunners very well. Super hard to watch. FP
