Down on the Farm: 6/30/2023

AAA:  Reno Aces defeated the Sacramento River Cats 6-4.

Isan Diaz 2B- 1 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .313.
Tanner Andrews RHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.60.

Cats roster is ravaged by all the callups and graduations.  Pretty much down to AAAA guys in the lineup now.

AA:  Reading Fightin' Phils beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3.

Logan Wyatt 1B- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .344.
Landon Roupp RHP- 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.74.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds pounded the Everett Aquasox 9-2.

Grant McCray RF- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, SB(30).  BA= .236.
Jared Dupere LF- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .266.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 1 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .208.
Ghordy Santos 2B- 2 for 4, HR(6), SB(4).  BA= .247.
John Bertrand LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.25.

A:  Modesto Nuts crushed the San Jose Giants 9-4.

Manuel Mercedes RHP- 4.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 3.36.

Complex Performances

Rayner Arias CF(DSL, 17 yo)- 0 for 1.  BA= .414.  Uh oh!  We don't like to see prospects of Arias' caliber come out of games early.  Hopefully precautionary but we've seen quite a few DSL prospects come out of games and not reappear on boxscores the rest of the season.

Junior Flores RHP(ACL, 21 yo)- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.18.

  1. Estrada has played 64 of the Giants' 74 games.
The Giants are better when he's playing than not. They are 39-29 with him in the lineup/field, 7-7 without him.
He was as good as it gets in his first 34 games, slashing .338/.388/.522/.910 and the leader in the field and at bat although this was not the best of times for the Giants. They "put it together" and began winning May 15th.
In Estrada's last 34 he's fallen off slashing .212/.270/.363/.633 while the Giants were 30-17, now in 3rd place 2.5 games behind. (He missed 13 games - and they had a losing record when he was on the IL.)
Hitting or not, Estrada is key to the Giants' success. Considered a below average fielder prior to 2023, he is now excellent.

    1. At the beginning of the season I worried that being the primary 2B and primary backup to SS might be exhausting for Estrada. Is that what we are seeing now or just the normal regression you would expect?

  2. I can't wait for the draft next Sunday. I'm guessing that fans will be more interested in who Giants take #1 due to the # of good young players brought up from the farm system with more to come. My pick that I hope the Giants take is Stanford infielder Tommy Troy. Wade Meckler-ranked #29 Giants prospect by MLB pipeline at the beginning of 2023, and drafted #8 in 2022. your ranking is probably similar. He seems to be good at controlling the strikezone and an excellent contact hitter. He'll probably need to develop more power to project as a regular Outfielder in MLB, but wow hard to ignore the great season he's having in AA Richmond.397 BA, and earlier at Eugene. Do you see him as a Giants top 10 prospect at the end of 2023? It's been a fun year at the minor league and major league levels. Great to see Patrick Bailey playing so well. Heard Kuiper say he could hit 230 and he would still want Bailey as his catcher. Sounds like the position is his to lose. It's unfortunate for Joey Bart. He was the 2nd overall pick in 2018, so want to see him have success, maybe with another org, but he needs to continue to work hard and improve so another team will want to take a chance on him.

    1. Excellent analysis, LG. I like Tommy Troy too. The second tier of this draft goes on forever so if Troy is already taken by #16, the Giants will have several excellent options including other college hitters, HS pitchers and HS hitters. I'm reading the Giants have taken long looks at a couple of HS SS's: Colin Houck who bats RH and Walker Martin who bats LH. Matt Shaw is another college SS who some scouts like better than Tommy Troy who has a similar profile.
