Jeremy Sy, SS. B-R, T-R. 5'11", 180 lbs. DOB: 10/14/1989
2012 College(LA-Monroe): .330/.436/.506, 15 2B, 7 3B, 4 HR, 14 SB, 41 BB, 49 K, 233 AB.
2013 Short Season: .294/.391/.518, 8 HR, 13 SB, 26 BB, 44 K, 170 AB.
Jeremy Sy was drafted as a college senior in round 12 of the 2012 draft after winning the Sun Belt Conference MVP Award. He was assigned to short season Salem-Keizer, but underwent TJ surgery before he played in any games. Since TJ takes a full calendar year for recovery, he did not start his 2013 until the start of short season ball again. Since he was already a year behind in age due to being a college senior, he is now a full 2 years older than the average age for level and will start 2014 at age 24. Obviously there are mitigating factors here, but the age is duly noted and checked off as a negative.
What Sy brings to the table is a pretty good looking bat with some speed to a premium position, if he can stick there. He did make 13 errors in 34 games. It seems like the best way for the Giants to shake out the SS logjam and give everybody playing time who needs it is for Matt Duffy to go to AA Richmond, Sy to SJ and Arroyo to Augusta. That would help Jeremy catch up in the age race, but he would still be old for the level.
BTW, he is listed on his milb.com player profile as 5'11". Other sites list him as 5'8" and he does look stubby in pictures.

Don't know if this is good or bad, but it is interesting to see how quickly the Giants moved Brandon Bednar into the utility role in SK, but kept Sy as the regular SS.

Bednar may have played several positions just because he could. He also has a size, 6'4" that makes it unlikely that he is a future SS.
DeleteName the tallest SS in MLB history?
DeleteJeter @ 6'3" is the tallest current SS, I believe.
Tulo is also 6'3"
DeleteARod is listed at 6'3", and once upon a time...
DeleteWhich of the three, Duffy, Sy and Arroyo, is better defensively at the moment?
ReplyDeleteReally hard to know as I do not know if anybody keeps publishes advanced defensive data for the minor leagues. Just based on Errors and the "eye test", I'd rank them Duffy, Arroyo, Sy right now.
