Game Wrap 9/16/2012: D'Backs 10 Giants 2

Maybe it's just me, but the Giants seem to have had trouble getting up for road trip finales all season.  Today was no exception.  The game started out promising enough but fell apart in the 4'th inning and went downhill from there.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 3.  BA= .291.  Pagan came out of this one early with a sore back.  He is not expected to miss any games.

Buster Posey- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .333.  I was kind of scratching my head during his 8'th inning AB wondering what he was doing still in a 10-2 game.  I guess Whiteside came in after that, but maybe should have been in a bit earlier.  I mean, if you are using Shane Loux, you've kind of thrown in the towel already.

Ryan Vogelsong- 3.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.65.  Vogey's stuff looks good.  Gotta be wondering if he's tipping pitches.  Corbin kind of looked like he knew what was coming on that bases clearing triple in the 4'th.

Fortunately, the Dodgers lost to the Cards 5-2 in extra-innings, so the Giants maintained their lead in the NL West at 7.5 games.

The Giants now come home for their final 10 game homestand starting with 4 games against the Rockies.  Madison Bumgarner faces Jhoulys Chacin in game 1 tomorrow night.

16 games to go.  Magic number is 9.  Go Giants!!

  1. Not sure who I would trust more as a a post season starter right now, Vogelsong, Zito, or Lincecum.

    1. If the decision was being made today, I have to think Vogey would be the odd man out.

    2. This is NOT a good problem to have...

Got to go with Timmy on stuff (which he still has but can't seem to control) and track record in big games.

Voggie I love, but in the playoffs you can't go 70+ pitches deep by the 3rd inning and give up key hits. Damn he is getting BABIP'ed to death. Add to that the triple he gave up to the opposing pitcher to break the game open and he is giving up a lot of key hits. Again he seems to still have his stuff, but can't control it at key moments.

Zito, it IS good that he even in this discussion. Let's see if he can keep it going throughout September. Decision can be made then. Still don't see Zito as having enough stuff to handle a hot hitting Reds team in the postseason.

Overall all 5 starters are giving runs early, running up their pitch counts early, giving up too many hits to opposing pitchers and barley making it to the 6th inning. If not for the improved offense and solid bullpen, the Giants might not be making the playoffs.

Maybe this is the year where Johnny Allstaff stars in the playoffs?

    3. but his stuff is good enough where he would still be in the pen.

all 5 sp's need to be made eligible, but the team needs to be careful not to carry too many pitchers for the lds

right now, i would leave affeldt off the lds roster as he has been too inconsistent
