Game Wrap 6/14/2024: Angels 8 Giants 6

Two young Giants pitchers got lit up in the early innings while Forever Giant Tyler Anderson played rope-a-dope with the Giants lineup.   Heliot Ramos' 3-run homer in the 8'th inning capped a 5-run rally to make this blowout game look a lot closer than it was.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski PH/RF- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .220.  YtY came in as a PH in the 8'th for Austin Slater who started against the LHP and went 0 for 4.  With runners on first and second. YtY hit one off the bricks in Triples Alley that probably would have been a HR in many ballparks to drive in the lead runner and put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with Heliot Ramos coming to the plate.

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 3, HR(7), 2 BB.  BA= .314.  Ramos drew two walks earlier in the game then powered a breaking ball with just a bit too much hang time over the CF wall to narrow the score to 8-6 and get the crowd all excited.  Alas, that was the end of the Giants scoring.

Tyler Anderson LHP(Angels)- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.58.   Anderson's strategy resembled the old bend-but-don't-break football defense or Muhammed Ali's Rope-A-Dope.  He seemed to go to 3 ball counts on every batter and allowed 10 baserunners but resisted the temptation to come in over the plate.  That tenacity paid off in a ton of LOB's.  He had an 8-run lead by the time the Giants scored their first run in the 4'th inning.

With the Loss, the Giants fell out of 3'rd place in the Wild Card race to a 1-game deficit. They trail the first place Dodgers by 8.5 runs in the NL West.

Keaton Winn RHP gets the start tomorrow against Patrick Sandoval LHP.

Churn Watch:

Nick Ahmed SS was activated off the IL and went 2 for 4 in the game.  Casey Schmitt IF was optioned to AAA Sacramento.  Marco Luciano SS was also optioned off the  IL.

Down on the Farm: 6/13/2024

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats outscored the Reno Aces 8-5:

Grant McCray RF- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .231.
Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .247.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 5, HR(10).  BA= .265.
Hunter Bishop DH- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .302.
Donovan Walton 2B- 1 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .269.
Brett Auerbach LF- 2 for 3, BB, SB(3).  BA= .329.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.24.
Cody Stashak RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.33.

Matos stays hot.

AA:  New Hampshire Fisher Cats outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-7(10 innings):

Carter Howell CF- 3 for 5.  BA= .273.
Andy Thomas DH- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .264.
Jairo Pomares LF- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(4), HBP.  BA= .232.
Seth Corry LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Jairo Pomares' slash line for June is .333/353/.606 after a .177 BA in May.  Don't sleep on Carter Howell.  He's shown a plus hit tool at every level after being signed as an undrafted FA out of Augustana in South Dakota in 2022.  Wasn't Augustana where Lyle Alzado went to college? Baby steps for Seth Corry.

A+:  Everett Aquasox topped the Eugene Emeralds 3-2:

Onil Perez DH- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .262.
Justin Wishkoski 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .281.
Tommy Kane LHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

A:  San Jose Giants edged out the Inland Empire 66'ers 7-6(10 innings):

Jonah Cox CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(37).  BA= .313.
Cole Foster SS- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .246.
Estanlin Cassiani LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .253.
Luis Perdomo LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 1.18.

Perdomo is a smallish lefty but has plus command of multiple pitches.  His appearance in the game I attended in Lake Elsinore was impressive. Another sleeper in the system.

ACL:  D'Backs defeated the Giants 5-4:

Maui Ahuna DH- 3 for 5, SB(3).  BA= .320.
Ryan Reckley 2B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .364.
Robbie Ray LHP- 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R,  0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.79.
Jose Rengel LHP(18 yo)- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 6.92.

DSL:  Giants Orange beat Colorado 6-5(7 innings):

Yosneiker Rivas SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .280.
Santiago Camacho C- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .214.
Jesus Alexander 1B- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .435.
Albert Jimenez 3B- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .143.
Erick Arosemena DH- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .250.
Dilan Fernandez RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00
Brayan Cabello RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

DSL:  Giants Black battered the Nationals 8-5:

Jhonny Level SS- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .231.
Angel Guzman 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(4), 2 BB.  BA= .467
Juan Colorado 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .478.
Yohendry Sanchez C- 1 for 1, BB.  BA= .235.
Evan Estevez RF(16 yo)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB, SF.  BA= .188.

4 HR's in 4 games for Angel Guzman.  Level and Sanchez got the two biggest bonuses from the current signing cycle.  Always exciting to see a 16 yo put up a strong batting line in a boxscore.

Down on the Farm: 6/12/2024

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats obliterated the Reno Aces 17-3:

Nick Ahmed SS- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .200.
Luis Matos LF- 3 for 6, 2 2B, HR(5).  BA= .240.
David Villar 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SF.  BA= .262.
Hunter Bishop DH- 2 for 4, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .304.
Blake Sabol C- 2 for 5, HR(2), BB.  BA= .207.
Grant McCray CF- 1 for 5, BB, SB(1).  BA= .222.
Carson Seymour RHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/4.  ERA= 4.24.

Reno is an extreme hitter's environment but Luis Matos' lines the last two game really stand out.  I'm thinking we'll see Nick Ahmed in a Giants uniform sooner than later.  Pretty impressive start for Seymour given the environment.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels declawed the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-0:

Andy Thomas C- 3 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .263.
Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .209.
Christian Koss SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .364.
Nick Sinacola RHP- 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
Ben Madison RHP- 2 IP, 2 H,  0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.70.

A+:  Everett Aquasox topped the Eugene Emeralds 5-1:

Turner Hill DH- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .268.
Onil Perez C- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .254.
Jack Choate LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.08.

A:  San Jose Giants blanked the Inland Empire 66'ers 3-0:

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4, 3 SB(36).  BA= .313.
Joe Whitman LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.29.
Austin Warren RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Brayan Palencia RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.50.
Ian Villers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 3.00.

ACL:  Giants topped the Cubs 5-4:

Walker Martin SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .196.
Mauricio Pierre LF- 2 for 2, 2 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .157.
Nomar Diaz C- 1 for 2, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .231.
Alix Hernandez RHP- 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.48.
Josh Wolf RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.70.

Game Wrap 6/12/2024: Giants 5 Astros 3

Austin Slater led the Giants lineup in support of Quality Start machine, Logan Webb, in securing a series win against a perennial World Series contender.  Key Lines:

Austin Slater LF- 3 for 5, SB(2).  BA= .212.   Slater says he was able to work out some things during his rehab assignment.  He is 6 for 13 since his return.

Jorge Soler DH- 2 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .217.  No power but at this point we'll take games like this from Soler.  Maybe he heard us talking about him?  Anyway, his slash line for June is .297/.366/.432 after an abysmal .184/224/262 in May.

Brett Wisely 2B-  2 for 4.  2B.  BA= .317.  Wisely should stick around after Nick Ahmed returns from the IL which could be as early as Friday.

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 3.02.  He's a QS machine which in addition to giving his team a chance to win, takes some heat off the middle/multi-inning relievers.

Ryan Walker RHP, Tyler Rogers RHP and Camilo Doval RHP shut down the Astros over the last 3 innings with Doval getting his 12'th Save.  This seems to now be Melvin's standard bullpen setup for games the Giants lead in the 7'th inning.

The Dodgers lost so the Giants gain a game on the NL West leaders to 8 games behind.  The Giants continue to lead a pack of teams for the the 3'rd Wild Card playoff spot by 0.5 games.  The Giants have multiple games scheduled against two of those teams, the Cubs and Cardinals, before the end of this month.

The Giants get a day off at home before taking on the Angels in a weekend series.  The scheduled starters Friday are TBD for both teams.

Sacramento River Cats outscored the Reno Aces 14-12:

Marco Luciano 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .273.
Luis Matos LF- 3 for 4, HR(4), BB.  BA= .229.
David Villar 1B- 2 for 5, HR(9).  BA= .257.
Tyler Fitzgerald 3B- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .448.
Jakson Reetz C- 2 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA= .282.
Clay Helvey RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.76.
Nick Garcia RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.86.

Hopefully the start of the road back for Matos and Luciano.  Reno is a great place for hitters to make their stat line look good, though.  Jakson Reetz HR was a grand slam

AA:  New Hampshire Fisher Cats defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-1:

Carson Ragsdale RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.09.

Cesar Quintas RF- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .232.
Shane Rademacher RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.92.

Huge night for Eldridge as he drove in 5 of the Giants 7 runs.

ACL:  Giants pounded the Padres 9-2(7 innings):

Maui Ahuna DH- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(2), SB(2).  BA= .250.
Lisbel Diaz RF- 4 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .426.
Ryan Reckley CF- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .316.
Derwin Laya 3B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .318.
Mikell Manzano RHP- 5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.37.

Delvis Heredia RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

DSL:  Giants Black defeated the Nationals 8-3:

Alessandro Duran C- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .222.
Diego Villegas 1B- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA- .429.
Marlon Franco RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Game Wrap 6/11/2024: Astros 3 Giants 1

They say it's a game of inches.  The difference in this one was a slightly offline throw to first base by Matt Chapman on a do-or-die barehanded infield dribbler, the exact same play he won a game with about a month ago.  That and Mauricio Dubon.   Key Lines:

Brett Wisely SS- 1 for  4, HR(2).  BA= .304.  Wisely's HR with one out in the third inning which tied the score at 1 would prove to be the only run the Giants would score on the night as they mustered just 2 other hits and 2 BB's.

Jordan Hicks RHP- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 3.01.  Hicks deserved better.  He got through 4 innings on 45 pitches getting K's and groundball outs while conserving his pitches.  Then Mauricio Dubon, who has become a real Giants nemesis, hit his second of two doubles to put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with no outs.  Hicks struck out Victor Caratini and Jose Altuve.  Alex Bregman then hit the dribbler up the 3B line which Chapman barehanded but threw slightly offline to Wilmer Flores at 1B.  Wilmer tried to stay on the bag to get out, and if caught, the throw had the runner beat.  Instead the ball got past Wilmer and both runners scored.  It was scored as a hit and an error on Chapman.  I don't see how Chapman could be charged with an error, yet both runs were charged as earned to Hicks.  In the end it didn't matter because the Giants didn't score another run in the game.

Taylor Rogers LHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.39.  Rogers looked like the nasty closer he was a few years ago with an unhittable curve and a sneaky fastball.  His ERA is 0.00 in 7.1 IP over his last 7 appearances and 1.20 in 15 IP over his last 15 appearances.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.51.  You have to wonder if Hjelle could be stretched out into a SP but he seems to be in a good place in his current role of multi-inning reliever.  He seems to have finally figured out how to use his dominant height to his advantage.  The picture on the TV screen of the height differential between him on the mound and Jose Altuve at the plate was well worth the time spent watching.

The Loss drops the Giants 9 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and into a tie with the Pirates for the third Wild Card playoff spot.

Logan Webb RHP tries for a series win this afternoon facing another tough opponent in Framber Valdez LHP.
