The Giants came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie this one 4-4 only to lose it when Marco Scutaro went deep on Santiago Casilla in the top of the 9'th inning. Marco Scutaro? Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 1 for 2, 3 BB, SB(4). BA= .293. OBP= .408. Looks like Blanco is this year's Brian Sabean Dumpster Dive Special. Sabes does seem to come up with at least one of these every year. 2010: Andres Torres. 2011: Ryan Vogelsong 2012: Gregor Blanco. I don't even know if Sabes personally had anything to do with signing any of those 3, but he does have an organization in place that is looking for these guys and open to giving them a chance. Blanco probably won't hit .293/.408 the rest of the way but in 768 MLB AB's, he has a .260/.362 line with 30 SB's. His minor league career OBP is .364. He clearly has the talent and track record to be an above average MLB leadoff hitter. Not sure why he was sitting out there on the scrapheap with numbers like that.
Brandon Belt- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SF. BA= .239. OBP= .350. This is not a bad line for a #2 hitter, but the bases loaded K will probably be what sticks in Bochy's mind from this game. The .194 BA over his last 10 games isn't helping Belt's cause either.
Melky Cabrera- 1 for 5, 2B. BA= .333. Melky looked like he wasn't even seeing the ball against Guthrie. He had some ugly swings Monday night too. Jon Miller was commenting on it on the KNBR broadcast. Then Melky lines a double to drive in 2 in the 7'th. Unfortunately, he went back to swinging ugly in the 8'th. Rex Brothers does have good stuff, so probably gotta give him some credit for the late K's. The RISP thing has gotten ridiculous again. Gotta be some performance anxiety issues getting into their heads. The sample size is getting way too big to be bad luck and they are clearly not that bad as hitters.
Buster Posey- 0 for 4, BB. BA= .280. Buster would be hitting lower in a good lineup.
Angel Pagan- 3 for 5, SB(7). BA= .288. Pagan is delivering about as expected at the plate, but the D is very disappointing.
Brandon Crawford- 2 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .225. Crawford is looking much better at the plate and in the field.
Tim Lincecum- 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 5.77. Timmy looked better tonight. He kind of got BABIP'd, but 3 walks is still too many.
Santiago Casilla- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 1.84. Casilla has been terrific as the closer, but you can't go giving up game winning dingers to Marco Scutaro. I think sometimes when closers get settled into the role, they just don't do as well in non-save situations. Wilson had those tendencies too.
With the loss, the Giants lost an opportunity to gain a game on the NL West leading Dodgers who lost to the D'Backs 4-1. The Giants remained 6 games back in second place. The D'Backs and Rockies each gained a game to 8.5 and 9.5 games out respectively. The Padres also won, beating the Nats 6-1 and are now 11.5 games out in last place.
The reigning WS Champion Cardinals come to town for a two game series with Madison Bumgarner going against Jaime Garcia in Game 1 tonight.

Game Wrap 5/14/2012
The Giants got a tenacious performance from Ryan Vogelsong and the offense came alive late in the game. Santiago Casilla held on, barely, to save it in the 9'th. Torture was alive and well out at the ballpark last night. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 3 for 4, HR(1). BA= .286. I believe Blanco's HR was the first of his MLB career and it was hit a long way fairly far back in the arcade in right-center, probably the toughest area to hit it out of AT&T Park. That blast broke through against Christian Friedrich and tied up a game it was starting to look like the Giants might lose 1-0. I was almost more impressed by the way Blanco started the winning rally in the 8'th. Leading off, he guided a perfectly placed ground ball to the left side, almost like he rolled it out there and beat it out. That skill will get him some base hits and a few extra times on base that other batters would not get.
Buster Posey- 2 for 4. BA= .289. Good to see Buster with a 2-hit game. The second hit was a very hard hit ground ball up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run with one out and runners on first and third. Had it not been hit so hard or right over the 2B bag, it could have turned into an inning ending DP.
Brett Pill- 2 for 4. BA= .255. The second hit drove in the insurance run that turned out to be needed. Pill is putting together consistently good games and can field 1B with the best of them. I would say Belt's playing time is shrinking in front of our eyes again. At least the FreeBelters can't say it's because Bochy has to play veterans.
Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3. BA= .212. Crawford seems more confident on the field and at the plate the last few games.
Ryan Vogelsong- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.66. Vogelsong once again refused to lose. He was battling a small strike zone and at least a couple of the walks, to Troy Tulowitzki, may have been strategic, so I think the 5 BB's are a bit misleading. I'm sure we'll see another article about his inevitable regression on Fangraphs today written by somebody who didn't see the game.
Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, Save(8). ERA= 1.29. Casilla showed some grit out there getting out of a very tough situation not entirely of his making. Closers are going to have games like this and it's important for them to not fold when it happens. Good growing game for Casilla.
Christian Friedrich(Rockies)- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 1.38. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a pitcher has good stuff against the Giants because, well, because almost every pitcher has good stuff against them! This was Friedrich's second MLB game. He comes with an excellent pedigree. His college scouting report had him with a plus-plus curveball. When you can put that with a FB that runs 91-94 MPH, you've got good stuff. Were it not for Gregor Blanco's timely dinger, he could have easily pitched a CG shutout, although I thought he was showing some signs of fatigue in the 6'th and 7'th innings.
With the Win, the Giants kept pace with the NL West leading Dodgers who got the best of the Kirk Gibson managed D'Backs 3-1. The Dodgers maintained their 6 game lead. The D'Backs dropped another game down to 9.5 games behind while the Reeling Rockies fell to 10.5 games behind. The Pathetic Padres lost again to the Washington Nationals 8-5 as Bryce Harper hit his first MLB HR and are now 12.5 games back in the cellar. The Giants also got their record back above .500 at 18-17. They stand 2 games behind the Mets in the race for the final playoff spot.
Tim Lincecum takes the mound tonight against Jeremy Guthrie.
Gregor Blanco- 3 for 4, HR(1). BA= .286. Game Wrap 5/13/2012: Giants 7 D'Backs 3
The Giants got another QS from Barry Zito and a sustained attack from the offense to win the game and the series from the slumping D'Backs. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 2 for 5. BA= .250. Blanco scored 3 runs and drove in 3 yesterday and today, both wins for the Giants. I think he's going to be staying in the lineup at leadoff hitter for awhile. It seems significant that he got this start against a LHP.
Melky Cabrera- 4 for 5. BA= .348. Melky is an absolute base hit machine. I don't expect him to sustain a .348 BA, but I don't think it's impossible either. He appears to be almost a lock to hit over .300 and get over 200 hits for the second consecutive year. Carl Steward on Extra Giants made an impassioned plea for the Giants to try to get Melky's contract extended before he hits FA at the end of the season. I agree with him, but am skeptical of Melky's camp agreeing to any deal as he will get PAID by some team in free agency. My guess? He'll be wearing a Dodger uniform next season.
Brett Pill- 1 for 5. HR(3). BA= .234. Let's see, HR's in last week for the Giants: Brett Pill 2, Melky 1, Rest of Team 0. Yeah, I'd say Bochy needs to find a way to get Pill in the lineup every day. With the emergence of Blanco in the OF, that might mean taking AB's away from Belt.
Angel Pagan- 2 for 5. BA= .277. Pagan has been on base 7 times in 2 games without scoring a run or driving one in.
Hector Sanchez- 2 for 5. BA= .267. Sanchez has been a strong backup. A very inspired roster decision out of spring training. Added benefit, he's the Zito Whisperer. Any bets as to what Zito's record would look like if Hector had not made the team?
Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .208. When Crawford hits one up the alley, it is a thing of beauty. He just doesn't do it often enough.
Charlie Culberson- 1 for 4. BA= .250. Culby made his MLB debut with his parents and wifey in attendence. Dad was moved to tears when his name was announced the first time. Did I hear right that Dad played in the Giants minor league system in the 80's?
Barry Zito- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 7/2. ERA= 2.53. Zito has 5 Quality Starts out of 7 and did not get shelled in the other two. I think we'll take that, right?
Sergio Romo- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00. Non-Save situation, but Romo struck out the side in the 9'th and the hitters never came close to making contact, at least from what I recall.
The Dodgers pounded the Reeling Rockies 11-5 so the Bruce Bochy managed Giants remained in second place, 6 games behind the leaders. Meanwhile the Kirk Gibson managed D'Backs slipped further into 3'rd place now 8.5 games behind. The Rockies slipped even further back at 9.5 games behind. The Pathetic Padres lost to the Phillies and dropped to 11.5 games back in last place in the NL West.
New Nickname: Mike "Bronco" Zagurski. Did you see him on TV? The name fits to a T! LOL!
The Giants return home to face the Reeling Rockies in a 2 game series with Christian Friedrich in his second MLB start facing Ryan Vogelsong.

AAA Omaha Storm Chasers blew away the Fresno Grizzlies 10-1:
Justin Christian(CF)- 3 for 4. BA= .374.
If I'm a GM out there looking for a very cheap CF option, I'm on the phone to Sabes looking for a trade for JC.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Bowie Baysox 2-0:
Johnny Monell(1B)- 2 for 3, 2 HR(3). BA= .219.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.81.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3). ERA= 1.83.
The 0 BB is the most important component of Kickham's stat line. He's made a successful jump from Low A to AA, but has walked 20 batters in 32 IP. Free Johnny Monell!
High A San Jose Giants pushed across a run in the bottom of the 8'th inning to edge the Visalia Rawhide 1-0:
Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 11/3. ERA= 4.40.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 6.28.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(7). ERA= 2.63.
Concepcion has 5 straight scoreless appearances covering 6 IP, with just 2 BB and 8 K's.
Low A Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1:
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.02.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 11.57.
Henry Owens(LHP, Greenville)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 4.91.
Crick has 32 K's in 26.2 IP, but has 18 BB's. This was his first game without crooked numbers in the BB column. Henry Owens is a big LHP from SoCal who I thought the Giants might be interested in last year as a first round draft pick. He ended up going to the BoSox in the supplemental round. He's put up similar numbers in the SAL as Crick with a higher K rate and a slightly higher walk rate. Owens has been an extreme FB pitcher while Crick has kept the ball on the ground.

Game Wrap 5/12/2012: Giants 5 D'Backs 2
Matt Cain pitched a solid game and helped himself with the bat. The rest of the Giants offense showed some life too. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 0 for 4, BB, SB(3). BA= .234. Blanco used his speed to score 2 runs even though he did not get a hit in the game. His OBP on the season is .357. He needs to be the leadoff hitter, period!
Brandon Belt- 1 for 5, 3B. BA= .246. Blanco reached 3B on a blown pickoff attempt after drawing a leadoff walk in the first. Belt drove him in with a groundball to the right side. Belt later scored on Melky's double after hitting a triple to CF. I didn't see it, so I'm not sure how well it was hit.
Melky Cabrera- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .331. NOW we're getting into unsustainable territory with Melky! Holy moly! Is he hot or what?
Angel Pagan- 3 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SB(6). BA= .273. So Pagan moves down in the order and THEN gets on base 5 times! This ought to improve that .278 OBP.
Matt Cain- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .235. Cainer's double drove in 2 runs. With a .235 BA, the Giants might have to consider using Cain as a DH in interleague play! Wouldn't shock me at all against LHP's. LOL!
Matt Cain- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 2.28. Cain raised his K/9 to 8.42 against a BB/9 of 1.58. His HR/FB is 7.9% which is slightly above his career average, but still significantly below league averages. His BABIP is an insanely low .183. Unsustainable? His ERA's have been trending down his entire career as has his BB/9. It does look to me like Cainer has taken it to a new level.
The Win allowed the Giants to keep pace with the NL West leading Dodgers who edged the Rockies 2-1 to stay 6 games up on the second place Giants. With the loss, the Kirk Gibson managed D'Backs dropped to 7.5 games back in 3'rd place while the Rockies dropped to 8.5 games behind. The Pesky Padres edged the Phillies and Roy Halladay 2-1 to remain 10.5 games back in last place.
Barry Zito tries to bring the Giants home with a split of the 6 game road trip tomorrow afternoon facing a guy who is always tough on the Giants, Joe Saunders. BTW, is there any pitcher out there who is not always tough on the Giants?
