The lineup handed Young Hayden Birdsong a lead in the top of the first inning but he failed to record an out in a disaster start. Key Lines:
Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 4, BB, R. BA= .257. You have to start from somewhere. Maybe reaching base 3 times is it for Devers?
Willy Adames SS- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(15), 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .230. Adames his hot. He needs some of his teammates to get hot with him.
Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI. BA= .238. 8 hits and 10 times on base in 15 PA's for Devers, Adames and Chapman, 3, 4 and 5 in the lineup, is encouraging. Unfortunately, Mike Yastrzemski RF(.238) was the rally killer batting 6'th with an 0 for 5.
Wilmer Flores 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, R. BA= .245. Flores batted out of the 7-hole.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 0.0 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 0 K, HBP. ERA= 4.80. Birdsong didn't get any help from the ump but a lot of his pitches were not at all close and I've listened to Kruk preach for 30 years that when you are wild, you're not going to get the calls you need on close pitches. It's hard to see Birdsong making his next start after this disaster. Some sort of reset seems almost mandatory.
Matt Gage LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00. Gage received the red alert and came on in the first inning with 3 runs in, bases loaded and no outs. He got 2 K's and seemed to be out of it but a groundball took a bad hop over Chapman's glove and 2 of his inherited runs scored.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.59. Bivens should sue for pitcher abuse. After a rough 1.1 IP yesterday he got through one inning today without giving up a run but he quite obviously ran out of gas in his second inning of work. In BoMel's defense, having to cover all 9 innings with the bullpen was a tough situation.
Tristan Beck RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.68. Anyone else thinks Beck has earned a look as a SP?
Landen Roupp RHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning track and extend his own string of strong starts tomorrow evening against Davis Daniel RHP who is making his 3'rd appearance and 2'nd start of the season. He comes in with a 1.80 ERA in just 5 IP.
I feel bad for either Mason Black or Carson Seymour who may have to be called up to be the emergency bullpen arm tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteBirdsong and Beck sent down, Hjelle and Seymour recalled.
DeleteDidn't see the game but my comments cover a short period of time. Nice to see Adames hot but don't understand why they can't seem to get 3 or 4 hitters hot at the same time?. Birdsong - watched a recent earlier start where he was wild and his velocity was all over the place. Young pitchers can struggle throwing strikes but also got concerned if his arm is healthy? I'm also thinking they rushed this kid up to MLB too fast? Saw an article that Red Sox regretting early returns on Devers trade, Harrison 5.5 era in AAA, hicks 4.5 era(not sure where), Tibbs 240 BA in AA. Too early to judge trade. Hopefully Devers will get hot too which will really help. Giants on 6 game losing streak. Baseball is unpredictable where they could get hot and. Win 6 in a row. If team doesn't start playing better how can Buster convince himself and owners to make a trade to add more payroll.
ReplyDeleteSox end of the trade will be to sign big FA pitcher with the money saved on Devers.
DeleteIt's reported that Kilen signed slightly below slot value, $5,247,500 vs $5,524,300.

DeleteOn the radio today, the football guy (Larry Kruger) was arguing that Buster put this team together based on an old-fashioned premise that doesn't work in today's MLB — great defense, superb pitching and clutch hitting. Sorry, I just don't accept these are no longer of value. This team simply doesn't have enough of these qualities. If you look hard enough, though, you still can see glimpses. Birdsong actually hit 96 today and his off-speed pitches had plenty of break (too much, as a matter of fact). He obviously still needs some grooming, perhaps in Sacramento. (I'd be in favor of sending Ramos down to work on his outfield play, too.) And Beck keeps looking solid since being called back up. My expectation is over the next year, we're going to see more contact-type of hitters added to the roster to complement the big swingers like Devers, Chapman and Adames.
ReplyDeleteDefense, pitching, and clutch hitting are things that work in Oracle.
DeleteI personally don't believe there is any such thing as "clutch hitting". If there is the impact is relatively small and unreliable. I would change the formula to Pitching, Defense and Contact Hitting(with gap power). Although the Giants have never been a "speed" team, even in the championship years, I would add speed to avoid station-to-station offense.
DeleteWhat is the most concerning right now is how undisciplined this team is right now. Melvin needed to give Ramos the hook after his many fundamental mistakes last night. Ramos needs to be riding the pine tonight to be held accountable. I have some concerns that Melvin is losing the clubhouse and is making some boneheaded decisions with the pitching as of late.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a few posts that suggest that the Giants trade Robbie Ray. Why would they do that? 9Ws and 4Ls, 292 ERA over 123 IP. They have him signed through 2026 and he is clearly their best pitcher this year. Am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteOriginal posters may not have been aware of team control through 2026.
DeleteIf you look at the last 2 weeks, 10 games, 3-7 record, there are few standouts: SP - Roupp, RP - 5 pitchers with ERAs under 3, 2 pitchers in the 4's (Walker & Ray), the rest above 6 (Webb is above 7!). They have collectively given up 57 runs, 4 of which were unearned.
ReplyDeleteNo batter with at least 10 PAs is above .300 (Flores is .300, 6-20).
Only Adames has more than 1 HR (4 — also leads in RBIs with 7).
RBIs: Chapman is 2nd with 5 (in 10 games). Flores, Schmitt, and YtY have ZERO.
YtY, Chapman, Schmitt, and Devers (@ .167) are all below .200!
