In a battle of aces, a grand slam home run by Casey Schmitt enabled Logan Webb to come out the winner over Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Key Lines:
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 5, HR(8), R, RBI. BA= .204. Adames got the Giants on top in the first inning with his 3'rd HR in 4 games. It as an oppo field blast that had Yamamoto shaking his head.
Dominic Smith 1B- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .367. Smith didn't figure in the scoring but doubled in the 5'th inning with Heliot on first base and Heliot got throw out at home on the play.
Wilmer Flores DH- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, R. BA= .263. Wilmer drew a walk in the third inning to load the bases for Casey Schmitt.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB, R, 4 RBI. BA= .231. Mighty Casey came up after the Giants loaded the bases on 3 walks and got all of a middle-in sinker that was just above the bottom of the strike zone and sent it half way up the LF pavilion seats. You are never completely secure against this Dodgers lineup but with Logan Webb pitching well, you had to feel pretty good about the Giants chances at this point.
Andrew Knizner C- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .067. Knizner added an insurance run with a HR of his own in the 8'th inning. How about that?
Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, 7/4 GO/AO. ERA= 2.58. The numbers suggest Webb did not have his best stuff going but once he had the 4-run lead he cruised through 7 innings and earned another Quality Start.
Tyler Rogers RHP and Ryan Walker RHP pitched scoreless frames in the 8'th and 9'th innings to finish up. Rogers got 3 ground ball outs. Walker was not as crisp as yesterday against the Rockies but he pitched through a walk in a non-save situation.
The Giants are tied with the Dodgers(there, I wrote the name) for first place in the NL West. I'm pretty sure none of us predicted that they would be tied for first place this late in the season. The Padres are 2 games behind in third place and the D'Backs are 5.5 games behind.
Landen Roupp RHP takes on an aging legend in Clayton Kershaw LHP tomorrow evening tying to clinch a series win in The Hated Ones' crib.
Webb didn't have his greatest swing and miss stuff but to hold the Dodgers 1st 4 of OHTANI, Betts, Smith and Freeman to 0-14 is pretty special and as bulldogish as one can get...Tyler Rogers doesn't get enough props..been nails all year...Schmidt and Adames picking up the power slack with Chapman out is big...
ReplyDeleteGreat bounce back game by the TEAM

Wouldn’t be the end of the world for Casey to show he’s figured out how to hit and we move him to 2b long term. I know you mentioned Buster and traceable assets. Have to believe it isn’t any of our young starters. Maybe one of the Carsons or second tier guys like Black that probably have not avenue at this point.
ReplyDeleteIf Schmitt can hit for average, Fitzgerald may be relegated to a bench role if he continues to scuffle.
DeleteI missed watching most of the game, but got home to see the 7th, 8th and 9th. Ryan Walker's stuff looked nasty. The movement on his pitches looked as good as ever. Maybe a little trouble controlling the movement, but he looked great. Let's go Giants!
ReplyDeleteI'm a Casey Schmidt fan and enjoyed watching video of his Grand slam several times! This is his chance to help the Giants big time while Chapman is out and maybe to help further his career. I remember seeing reports during Spring Training that other teams were asking the Giants about Schmidts availability, I'm sure they'll be watching now. I don't want to see Schmidt traded, but it might be good for him to go to a team that can give him more playing time at 3rd base, his best position.
ReplyDeleteLet's keep Schmitt and move him to a regular role at 2B after Chapman returns ... use Fitz as a super utility type (including 1B). Also, if Roupp doesn't have a strong outing tonight and next week, I'd be open to offering him in a trade with a minor league pitcher (Black?) for a non-rental (left-handed) power corner OF bat.
ReplyDeleteSomething that happened in MLB yesterday has nothing to do, directly, with the Giants but was a curious event:
ReplyDelete30-yo veteran starting pitcher Aaron Civale was traded to the Chicago White Sox one day after he requested the Milwaukee Brewers to move him because he was pulled from the Starting Rotation. The Brewers received first baseman Andrew Vaughn, a career nobody with one more year of arbitration, and sent cash to Chicago in the exchange.
Civale is a free agent at the end of the season. Who would want an aging, mediocre SP who had, maybe, one good season and won't consider relieving?
Chicago is getting money along with Civale for the rest of 2025, but so?
Not only has this nothing to do with the Giants, does it have anything to do with anything?
I saw that. I think think there still might be some hope for Andrew Vaughn but he needs a team with advanced hitting analytics and patience to let him relearn to hit. The White Sox aren't going anywhere so they had nothing to lose playing him but I am pretty sure he was not getting any useful hitting coaching there either. The Giants might have more advanced hitting instruction than the White Sox but probably didn't want to rehab another failed hitter at the MLB level. We'll see if the Brew Crew can give him what he needs.
