Down on the Farm: 5/1/2025

AAA:  Reno Aces outlasted the Sacramento River Cats 3-2(10 innings):

Grant McCray CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .244.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, 8/2 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.50.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.04.

Impressive start for The Whiz, especially after the Aces score 23 runs in the previous 2 games.  Looks like both Kyle Harrison LHP, Whiz and possibly Carson Seymour are ready to step into the Giants rotation any time needed.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-1:

Diego Velasquez 2B- 1 for 4, BB, 2 SB(4).  BA= .314.
Carter Howell CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .218.
Bryce Eldridge DH- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .280.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Vaun Brown LF- 1 for 4, 2 SB(5).  BA= .237.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, BB.  BA= .195.
Jack Choate LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's, 5/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 2.79.
Tyler Myrick RHP- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.72.

After going 1 for 9 in his first 3 games(the one hit was a HR), Bryce Eldridge has a 4-game hit streak in which he is 6 for 16(.375).  The overall 11 K's in 25 PA's with 0 walks is something to watch going forward.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds topped the Everett Aquasox 6-5:

Bo Davidson CF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .343.
Charlie Szykowny 1B- 3 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .273.
Scott Bandura RF- 3 for 3, 2B, HBP, 2 SB(7).  BA= .347.
Onil Perez C- 1 for 3, BB, SB(2).  BA= .238.
Scott Rademacher RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 0.38.

Bo Davidson and Scott Bandura are two really interesting OF prospects with some tools.  Rademacher looks like he could move up to AA anytime.

A:  San Jose Giants outscored the Modesto Nuts 10-9:

Carlos Gutierrez RF- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .292.
Lisbel Diaz CF/RF- 2 for 4, 3B, HBP, SB(7).  BA= .299.
Jakob Christian 1B- 3 for 4, 3B, SF, 2 SB(5).  BA= .307.
Jean Carlos Sio 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .257.
Robert Hipwell DH- 1 for 1, 3B, 4 BB.  BA= .148.
Ryan Slater RHP- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.84.

Carlos Gutierrez was lifted for a PH(Dakota Jordan) after 3 PA's for no apparent reason.

  1. I would start exploring the idea of trading one of the young arms for a rental as we get closer to the trade deadline. I think fourth outfielder, first base, and a platoon partner for bailey may be three areas where we may trade a young arm or two for rentals.

    1. Or perhaps an old arm for an impact bat and replace in the rotation with a young arm.

    2. Why would another team take on an old arm for an impact bat?

    3. I definitely wouldn’t want them to trade lefties Harrison and Whisenhunt. The Giants won the World Series by developing home grown elite pitching, it by trading them away. I agree they have a surplus of young starters including Roupp, Black and the Carsons so it’s definitely an area where they could make a trade. But I definitely don’t want them to trade any of those lefties. Black has been good through his entire career in the minors, wouldn’t mind trading him but also wouldn’t mind keeping him

    4. Ray, for example, might net a real impact bat. Do I want to trade him? No. As you say, though, one needs to trade quality to get quality.

  2. Whisenhunt 7 IP — good to see stretching these guys this year, quite a departure!
