Game Wrap 5/1/2022: Nationals 11 Giants 5

The Giants fielded a lineup which included 4 guys who not only started they year in the minor leagues, they came to the Giants as castoffs from other teams.  Plus a rookie catcher who is still trying to find his footing in the major leagues.  Add in a SP fresh off the IL and you had to suspect this game might not go well.  It didn't.

Alex Cobb RHP started the game and was obviously rusty from the layoff.  He was not helped when Jason Vosler 3B, one of the aforementioned castoffs who started the season in the minor leagues, whiffed on a potential GIDP that started with runners on first and second and no outs.  Instead of ending up with a runner at 3B and 2 outs, the play ended with a run in, runners at 2'nd and 3'rd and no outs.  Just a bit of a difference there.  The next batter grounded out so it's very possible Cobb would have escaped the inning without giving up a run.  Maybe he settles down and goes deep into the game instead of leaving after just 0.2 IP.  At least he was only charged with 1 ER out of the 5 that scored while he was in there.

The Giants had no multihit games and no XBH's yet somehow managed to score 5 runs.

On the bright side, Sam Long LHP pitched 2.1 scoreless frames.  Jarlin Garcia LHP pitched 1.2 shutout innings and Camilo Doval RHP struck out the side in the 9'th inning.

The Giants get a needed day to regroup before heading down to LA for a 2 game set.  Carlos Rodon LHP gets the start on Tuesday.

Expect to see a huge roster churn this week as guys start to come off the IL and rosters are reduced to 26 players from 28.  Personally I've completely lost track of who is on the 40-man roster and who all is on the IL COVID vs Injury.  Stay tuned!

  1. What's important sometimes in MLB is not what team you play but when you play them. Injuries are not an excuse for the Giants poor play, but adding the COVID 19 outbreak among the players on top of that makes it tough. My concern is getting the SPS like Cobb and Descafani healthy and pitching well. Too many bullpen games this early will wear out the bullpen by July

    1. Nobody likes excuses and good organizations plan for injuries but they are a big factor in season outcomes. We'll never know if the last year's NLDS would have turned out differently had Brandon Belt not been injured but having him in their lineup would have improved their chances.

  2. I would never trust Beede to pitch in a close game, and he doesn't give innings as a mop up/long guy. I think it's time to move on, he's just wasting a pen spot right now.

Hopefully McGee can turn it around

    1. Beede is just one of several dilemmas FZ is going to have to deal with as rosters cut down to 26.

  3. My hats off to the team for the 5 run rally in the 7th. Got the team within striking distance. Then, unfortunately, McGee came in and promptly loaded the bases and gave up 3 to salt the game. Still, a game effort on the part of the Giants. At least for that one inning.

    1. McGee looked sharp in spring training and even seemed to have some snap on the slider. Not so much since the season started. He looks awful right now.

  4. I saw Lucius Fox's name in the box score and had to double take-- great analysis in 2016 by Dr.B at that time-- he looks pretty fast out there and it's so hard to tell which of the prospects will do well in the major leagues!

    1. Ha! I don't remember what I said about him in 2016. I think I might not have been too excited that they mortgaged 2 years of international signings to go over the cap on Lucius Fox.
