Down on the Farm: Who's Hot?

AAA:

After a slow start in Sacramento, Heliot Ramos OF went 4 for 4, 2B on 8/2.
Joey Bart C hit .400 with 5 HR for the month of July.
Mauricio Dubon IF/OF is hitting .360 since being sent down July 1.
Camilo Doval RHP reportedly hit over 104 MPH on the radar gun a few games back, but is still struggling with command.

AA:

Sean Hjelle RHP had his best start of the season on 8/3:  7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K to lower his overall ERA to 3.15.  He has 69 K's in 65.2 IP with a near-dominant GO/AO= 1.80. Nice job for FZ to hang onto him at the trade deadline.

High A:

Ryan Murphy RHP had a successful high A debut 8/3:  5.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K's.

Low A:

Luis Matos OF is scorching hot with a 9 game hit streak in which he is 20 for 39.
Marco Luciano SS hit his 18'th HR on 8/3. He's slashing a solid .278/.373/556 overall for the SJ Giants.
Jairo Pomares OF hasn't stopped hitting since his 2021 season debut on June 15:  .348/.409/.665 overall.

Complexes:

Aeverson Arteaga SS(18 yo) is 3 for 6 first two games in August and .352/425/.659 overall.
Keep an eye out for Manuel Mercedes RHP(18 yo).  He is listed at 6'3" 162 and reportedly sports a high 90's FB and a sharp slider.  He had his best start of the season on 8/2:  6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  He's allowed 2 ER in 16 IP over his last 3 starts with 14 K's.

  1. Darn! I was planning to drive up to see Luciano when they play in Lake Elsinore and learned he was just promoted to Eugene. Still worth the drive to see Matos, Pomares, ….

  2. Marco Luciano gets the expected promotion to High A Eugene.

I traveled to Fresno last night to watch the SJ Giants play the Fresno Grizzlies - the teams with the 2 best records in the Low A West league. 19-year old Kyle Harrison went 4 2/3 innings, missing completing 5 innings when he walked Trevor Boone, after striking out 2 batters and giving up a homerun earlier in the inning. He had a bit of wildness and some bad luck in the first inning - hitting the first batter, then giving up a bunt single to Fresno's star 19-year old Zac Veen. A fly out to left resulted in a run when the left fielder overthrew the cut off man, allowing the runner at 2nd to come all the way around to score. Kyle then gave up two bloop singles - each of which seemed to be hit off the handle of the bat and each landed over second base, out of the reach of the infielders. His only easy inning was the 2nd, in which he gave up a single, struck out the next batter and induced a double play grounder to short. He had runners on in each inning. He struck out 6, walked 3 and hit the same batter twice.
An interesting battle was Kyle v. Vreen. As I watched Vreen's at bats, I thought that we will be seeing them face each other for many years in the majors. Vreen was Colorado's 1st round pick in 2020. He is 4 months younger than Kyle. He is listed at 6'4" and 190 lbs. He plays the outfield and has both power and speed (28 steals so far this year). In his first at bat he bunted the ball, Casey Schmidt came in and gloved the ball and didn't even try to throw him out. Kyle struck him out in the 3rd and walked him in the 4th. Kyle's fastball was sitting around 94-95 with his off-speed at 81-83.

As expected Luis Matos and Jairo Pomares were hitting stars with Luis going 2 for 3 with a stolen base and an RBI. Pomares went 3 for 5 with an RBI on his 21st birthday. Tyler Wyatt, recently called up from the Arizona complex league, hit a couple of rockets to right center - each for a double. APGiantsfan

  3. I read a nice update on Sean Hjelles progress from Ryan Vogelsong who is a Giants minor league pitching coach saying Hjelle has the stuff and mental makeup to make it to the big leagues. He just needs to put it together and he'll be up in the majors
