Down on the Farm: Mauricio Pierre, DSL Phenom

Hey team!  Amid the gloom of the Giants blowing the first two games of the Pirates series they should be on the verge of sweeping, let's take a look at an emerging phenom down in the DSL.

Mauricio Pierre OF.  DOB:  11/23/2003.  B-R, T-R.  6'3", 180 lbs.

2021 DSL:  .344/.382/.625, 3 2B, 2 HR, 32 AB.

Pierre was signed in January of 2021 out of Panama for a $490 K bonus.  As you can see from his measurements, the watchword on him is projectability particularly in strength and power.  Thing is, he's off to a great start in the field in the DSL, albeit in an admittedly SSS.  Still, most 17 yo's don't hit 2 HR's in a full DSL season and he's already hit 2 in 9 games with 3 2B to boot.  If there is more power in the tank, I can't wait to see it!

If you want to see a more complete write up, I recommend Roger Munter's blog There R Giants and a post entitled Scouts Eye View of Mauricio Pierre.  March 5, 2021.

  1. Those numbers, even with a SSS, certainly show that he has potential.

On a semi-related note, Giants signed their top two draft picks for under the slot money.

  2. Thanks for letting us know about this "emerging phenom". Goes to show if you are a talented player teams will find you no matter where you're at in the world. Didn't know Mariano Rivera and Rod Carew were signed out of Panama also. I like your new format, hopefully its fun for you too. Last place teams can beat 1st place teams, that's baseball, especially if you don't pitch well and are depending on depth pieces to come through for you daily

  3. If only LaMonte Wade Jr could hit LHP!
OTOH, there are more RHP than LHP, so he should bat 1-3 against every RHP the Giants face and the first guy in against relieving RGP with runners on!

    1. Like, how do we know he can't hit LHP's? He never gets a chance!

    2. Maybe they know?
      Granted a SSS:
Career he's hitless in 35 PAs,
0-20 for the Giants this year.
