Down on the Farm: 7/29/2014

AAA  Reno Aces defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 7-3:

Sorry everybody, NTSH.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Harrisburg Senators 5-2:

Jarrett Parker(RF)- 3 for 3, 2B, HR(12), BB.  BA= .275.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.24.
Edwin Quirarte(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.17.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(7).  ERA= 2.92.

Parker is on a tear hitting .444 over his last 10 games and .329 for the month of July.

High A  San Jose Giants edged the Modesto Nuts 3-2:

Ben Turner(Catcher)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .290.
Pat Young(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.18.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(5).  ERA= 1.09.

Turner is quietly having a nice season.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets downed the Greensboro Grasshoppers 8-5:

Sam Mende(3B)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .400.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.08.
Carlos Diaz(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.27.

Short Season  Eugene Emeralds topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 8-6:

Johnshwy Fargas(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3), 2 SB(9).  BA= .250.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .143.

Fargas started off hot, then slumped, but is now hitting .361 over his last 10 games.  I hadn't noticed that Ryder Jones was transferred to S-K from Augusta.  Reports are that the everyday grind of professional baseball wore him down.

Rookie AZL  A's pounded the Giants 14-2:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .200.
Dylan Davis(RF)- 1 for 2, BB, 2 Assists.  BA= .375.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.46.

Carbonell needs to hit, pure and simple. If he does, the sky is the limit.  If he doesn't, he's a pumpkin.  Rayan Hernandez seems to be getting just a bit of traction on his pro career and is getting longer stints on the mound.

DSL Red Sox outscored the Giants 7-3:

Mikey Edie(CF)- 1 for 3.  BA= .311.

  2. What happened to Olbis Parra in the DSL? He was off to a 4-0 record with a 1.24 ERA. Hasn't pitched since July 9th.

    1. No idea. Almost impossible to get info about DSL players, especially non-elite ones. I'd guess that he has some sort of injury.

  3. DrB, with the way the Giants have been playing don't you think that maybe standing pat and trying to pickup some players during the waiver period would be better than trading a bunch of prospects for a chance for a 1 game playoff wildcard game. I just don't see that spark they had in May coming back. I truly believe we should just do nothing unless someone who could help us in 2015 at a reasonable price comes forward. We have had a decent amount of luck in waiver claims such as Cody Ross. He was huge in the playoff push and we got him for practically nothing.

Also, if Cain is seeing Dr. Andrews it sounds like they have have concerns with a ligament and not just bone chips. You are the expert here but if it was just bone chips causing the issue they might have gone to another specialist. Is that fair to say? We might need to get another starter for next year if he is going to be out for a year. Maybe we should be in on a guy like Hamels or Price that could help us in 2015. Any thoughts?

    1. I think if there is a chance to make the Wildcard, even with the 1 game playoff, they have to go for it. They aren't going to be able to get an elite player like Price or Hamels, but they can get upgrades. They can afford to give up a few prospects without seriously depleting the farm system.

I think it is too early to jump to conclusions about Cain's condition just based on who he has an appointment with.

  4. I was in attendance last night at the SJ Giants/MNuts game. I was particularly impressed with the SJ closer Bryce Bandilla. Tall, slim, athletic looking LHP. Nice fastball at 94-96 MPH with a change-up he had a little trouble controlling. But he retired the three batters he faced in the 9th in a one run game.

    1. Slim? Bandilla must have lost a heckuva lot of weight since last year when he was so rotund it impinged on his delivery!

    2. Just for the record: Bryce Bandilla is listed at 6'4", 235 lbs. I would not call that slim.
