Down on the Farm: 7/13/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies edged the Tacoma Rainiers 5-4:

Tony Abreu(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP.  BA= .281.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(16).  ERA= 3.65.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Bowie Baysox 7-2:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  2 SB(37).  BA= .270.
Matt Duffy(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .337.
Mario Lisson(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(12).  BA= .277.
Devin Harris(LF)- 1 for 4.  HR(9).  BA= .266.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 6 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.23.

I see signs of growth in these numbers for Crick.  More willing to pitch to contact, keep the walks down, let his stuff do the work.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Stockton Ports 4-1:

Elliott Blair(LF)- 3 for 4, 2 2B, SB(8).  BA= .299.
Chuckie Jones(RF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .264.
Trevor Brown(Catcher)- 2 for 3, SF.  BA= .214.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 13 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(9).  ERA= 2.39.

Wow!  I believe this is, by far, Lujan's most dominant line of his career so far!

Low A  Greenville Drive stopped the Augusta Greenjackets 8-5:

Cristian Paulino(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .242.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .224.
Ty Ross(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2B, SF.  BA= .246.
Gabriel Cornier(1B)- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .289.

Short Season  Hillsboro Hops topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-5:

Travious Relaford(3B)- 2 for 4, SB(4).  BA= .273.
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 3 for 5.  BA= .287.
Shilo McCall(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .182.
John Deacon(Catcher)- 3 for 4.  BA= .290.

Rookie AZL  Giants pounded the Reds 11-3:

Richard Amion(CF)- 2 for 5, BB, SB(2).  BA= .294.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .400.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .299.
Nicol Parra(LF)- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .263.
Nick Vander Tuig(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.95.

  1. Crick gave up 2 HRs. He had 5 in his career going into the game. That's a bit too much pitch to contact.

    1. Baby steps. Plus, I would rather he give up 2 solo shots than walk 5 guys.

  2. I cannot honestly see what is left for Matt Duffy to prove at AA. He is consistently getting hits every night. It doesn't seem like much of a challenge for him. Let's move him up to AAA.

Matt Lujan is pretty special in my opinion. I think he has handled the jump from low A to high A very well. Especially going from a pitchers league to a hitters league. I think this may be cautiously optimistic but I could see him eventually being a top 10 organizational prospect for us.

  3. Agree on Duffy. His numbers are pretty similar to former first rounder SS Deven Marrero of the BoSox who recently got promoted to AAA. And, Duffy is a few months younger.

  4. Kelby Tomlinson is slowly getting that BA up to respectable levels in the big bad Eastern league. Dunno if this is actual improvement, or the randomness of baseball at work. His power is sad, but I remember Baggs saying a year or two ago that he could flat out beat anyone in the org in a foot race but Brown. He can take a walk, and judging by his SB numbers he nows how to use his speed better than Brown. Gotta love those table setters to dream on...

  5. Agree on DUFFY, he was one of my dark-horses early last year with both LUJAN and AUSTIN FLEET (We'll forget Mitch Lively!!)..The kid is a pure baseball player and can do everything, hit for aver, hit for some power, run and field.....Unfortunately, where do you put him? Don't want him riding the bench in SF and Richmond might be a better place for him than Fresno...

LUJAN interested me last year because he just always got the job done....When I asked about him, I got the impression he was just an average arm control pitcher with a limited ceiling..Hopefully, that isn't true and/or he's improving...

My other dark horse from last year AUSTIN FLEET, did a good job starting and relieving for FRESNO ....With other more highly touted Giant pitching prospects being hurt in RICHMOND this season (Blackburn, Meija, even Marte), FLEET had been starting in Richmond and doing a fine job (same level pitching as he did in Fresno---the guy is consistent)..

However, now with everybody back, RICH has Crick, Blach, Marte, Blackburn, Snoddgrass (he had a 15 -1 GO to FO ratio the other day) and Meija with FLEET being sent to the bullpen joining strickland, Okert and Hall!..

And we have talked about our pitching prospects getting back on track, well, RICH already played it's Monday game winning 5-0 and Meija pitched 5 innings of two hit zero-walk ball in the win....

Somehow, though, I don't expect the glut to last long in Richmond...There were a bunch of scouts during their last home series and I think this is where the trading chips are going to come from---likely in the form of BLACKBURN and OKERT...Just my guess

    1. Speaking of trading chips, how do posters here prioritize our trading needs?

      For me,

      1. bench guy who can leadoff, when needed, for a month or so.
      2. 2B (better at leadingoff/batting near the top than power, but both if we can get one)
      3. shut down 8th inning guy (leaving the 7th to Romo/Affeldt/Lopez) or a closer, moving Cassilla to the 8th

  6. I don't know if even the Giants know what to do at 2B right now. They have no idea if Scutaro can play multiple games a week with his back. I think that is why Ben Zobrist has come up in rumors because he can play 2B as well as outfield. He has a 7.5MM team option with a 500K buyout for next season. So he is not necessarily a rental player. You can option Panik back to AAA and slide him in or eventually DL Scutaro until he can play everyday which could possibly mean next season. Romo has been much better lately and Machi definitely has good stuff but has had a few tough weeks. So to add bullpen help who are you going to let go. You would have to expose someone to waivers. Unless it was a clear upgrade I say leave the bullpen alone.

Alex Rios is having a great year batting .302 with 111 hits. The Rangers are the worst team in baseball and they are going to want to cut payroll. He has a team option for 2015. If Pagan cannot make it back healthy like last year could he go to RF and Pence play CF? I believe he could be a valuable piece going forward. If Pagan can make it back healthy it would be hard to place him anywhere unless we have totally lost confidence in Morse.

  7. Giants wanted Rios before and usually end up getting the guys they want at some point even if it is years later.Steve Finley comes to mind
