Hot Stove Update: Winter Meetings Day 3

Nothing happened.  What a waste!  Sabes is probably already on a flight home.  Rule 5 draft in the morning.  Giants won't select anyone in the MLB phase and could lose a prospect or 2.  They have taken players in the minor league phase the last 2 years.  Players taken in the minor league phase can be assigned to any level without offering them back to the original team.  On the other hand, Rule 5 eligible players are only 1 year away from minor league free agency.

  1. I know it. Sabes is probably sleeping in his bear cave while Bobby Evans does all the heavy lifting.

Say Doc, thanks for being a good sport and putting up with my 20 "pointed" questions. Maybe they weren't so loaded. I am just trying to poke some holes in the case for WAR as a comparison tool. I think it's plenty flawed, but serves a purpose: chiefly to boil down argument and comparisons to one number. Oversimplification IMO.

I've got another example for you:

Gregor Blanco "saved 10 runs" in 238 chances. Juan Perez saved his 10 runs in 76 chances. Something is wrong here !

and I have one more "loaded" question for you:

Brian Sabean. Great GM? Or greatest GM ever?

Have a nice end of winter meetings day!

    1. The first one is easy. Juan Perez was fantastic on defense in a short time span. He led the team in OF assists during his brief playing time. He actually did save those runs!! Whether that would hold up over a full season? Probably not, but both Blanco and Perez are very good OF's who both pass the "eye test".

I have said it many times. Brian Sabean is a very good GM. Based on Pat Gillick as a comp, he deserves consideration for the HOF as it currently stands. If the Giants win one more championship during his tenure, he should be a shoe-in.

    1. Well, it that is true, we'll get to see UZR in action this season. I don't believe this is an upgrade when you take the total picture into account, but maybe Morse has one more huge offensive season in his tank and Sabes will have caught lightning in a bottle once again. It's happened before.

    2. Giants and DBacks both believe the WAR attributed to OF defense is overblown. As do I. That's my read, and I'm stickin with it.

Happy Mike Morse day Giants fans!

    3. To me, it's not WAR is overblown or not; if everyone uses WAR, and because there is a firm definition, the calculated numbers are the same for each player, regardless of which team is doing the calculation, it's hard to gain a competitive advantage.

The same with all other versions of WAR, unless you are talking about some proprietary versions -there, you got refinements on top of a lot of known refinements out there, which could be like a lot of specialized academic studies where the application range is narrow and opportunities rare, benefits uncertain.

I would like to a few examples of great playesr ignored by scouts but discovered by proprietary WAR.

With scouts, there is no formula and everyone does it differently.

That's where you can win big, when there is a sudden change of direction - like a sudden change of attitude, discovery of a new pitch, etc...all those human elements.

  3. Thank you Sabean. I don't care about the D, Blanco will be coming in for the 8th and 9th which is the way it should be. Morse can bat 5th or 6th and give us another power bat we desperately needed. Now you can put a bow on the offseason.

    1. what power bat? he had one good year re hr

his avg is pathetic and he k's way too much

what are you guys seeing that im not?

    2. Four out of the last five years, he had SLG over .470 versus Blanco's peak of .369, on the hitting side, if we are talking about offense...30% more, using his worst year relative to Blanco's best, over those 5 years.

His avg is pathetic...for 2013, yes. But actually good the other 4 years. As for K's, he had 3 good OBP years out of the last five.

      I see potential.

    1. Dear Bacci,

      Please be excited.

      Sincerely,

    2. Sometimes, when people don't post, it means they are excited.

When we are not happy, that's when we post a lot.

That's my impression anyway, following today's prospect-not-losing addition of a bat...unless we can get into 'it's too much money.'

    4. Some may say not bad, but I think good pick up and time to laugh a bit, some or a lot.

  5. Good signing if he stays healthy for 100 games. Worth the risk since he'll lengthen the lineup.

  6. This just in: The Giants have signed Herman Munster to play left field. The defensive sabermatricians will have a field day with this one.

I personally am excited to see what he can do. I am assuming Blanco will replace him in later innings. If he can replicate 2011 or 2012 I will be very pleased

    2011 - .303 .360 .550 31 homers 95 RBI
    2012 - .291 .321 .470 18 homers 62 RBI

I think we all can agree 2013 was an abysmal year for him.

  7. I love this signing of MORSE....Agree that he's coming off a bad year but the three years before that is exactly what the GInats needed...Career .291/.340 against LHP and only slightly lower vs RHP..with Power...

Look at his average WAR of about 1.8 for his three years in Wash.....

The Giants can go several ways with this....they can go with a platoon of Morse/Blanco or they can go with MORSE as the majority starter against LH's and some righties.....and with BLANCO being able to come into any game that the Giants need to protect a lead..

In other words, look at how the Giants did it with Pat Burrel in 2010....

I've questioned Sabean with not being true to his word os saying the Giants need RH [power in the lineup and off the bench...he was true to his word....Let's see if he and I were right!

And, best of all, no prospects given up and it's only a one year contract...I really like this move..

    1. I like that we still have all the prospects, except Monell and Peguero.

That Monell cash, I hope we put it to use at the trading deadline. Wait, maybe it has been spent already on Morse.

  8. I tend to be naively optimistic when it comes to the Giants, so I view this as a low risk signing (1yr/$5M) that gives us some pop. I still like Blanco, so if we do PtB redux then great. And I'm still calling for WS Ring #3 in 2014 (and #4 in 2016 to keep the streak alive)!

Of course, I was similarly optimistic lsst yesr when Morse returned to the M's with a flourish...only to have him released after injuries and an abysmal rest of the campaign at the plate.

Here's to a great 2014, sweeping Beltran & the Evil Empire in late October!!!!

  9. The Phils lost Rosin in the Rule V draft today.

Sabes puts another trade in the "Fleeced 'em" column...

    Nate: Non-tendered
    Rosin: Rule V
Joseph: Horrid year, prospect status dropping.
