Game Wrap Spring Training 2013: Giants 2 Rangers 1

Madison Bumgarner and Yu Darvish hooked up in spring training version of a pitcher's duel and Bumgarner got the best of it while Hunter Pence brought the bat the Giants and their fans hope they see a lot more of this year.  Key Lines:

Tony Abreu- 1 for 2.  BA= .500. Abreu complained of pain above his knee after the game and is not expected to play tomorrow.  Dude has been hurt his entire career!

Nick Noonan- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .143.  Noonan reportedly made a great play from 3B in this one and may be getting some traction for a roster spot.

Hunter Pence- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B.  BA= .300.  I think that's the guy we would all like to see in more games this year.

Kensuke Tanaka- 1 for 2, BB, SB(3).  BA= .229. If Tanaka can convince the Giants he's safe to put on the field on defense, I would think the reserve IF job it his.

Madison Bumgarner- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.86.  I have found myself shying away from Bummy in fantasy mock drafts due to that mysterious loss of command and velocity last year.  I might have to re-think that after today.  Still 3 weeks away from my real fantasy draft, though.

Chad Gaudin- 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.61.  Not as good as his spot start, but probably good enough to keep the inside track to the last bullpen job.

Heath Hembree- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 9.00.  Nice bounceback from a rough last outing.

Dan Runzler- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.50.  Mijares better get his elbow ready in a hurry or he could find Runzler occupying his roster spot.

  1. Scouting the competition:

Greinke back to LA for a consult with minor soreness in the back of the elbow. MRI negative. Still, interesting.

Was watching Ryu go against the Brewers. So, yeah, as expected, the guy is polished. Works a nice, fast pace. Very calm demeanor. Uses the whole strike zone. Seems to have pretty good control.

I can't read arm speed in person, let alone on TV. But he seems to maintain a consistent release point with 3 pitches: FB, curve and change. The change is exceptional. He absolutely abused Rickie Weeks on a Change, Curve, FB string for a KO, all on the outside corner. Weeks was very off balance the whole AB.

Ryu stands on the 1B side of the rubber, and likes to cross the plate with horizontal action, especially going low (inside to RHB/outside to LHB). Throws 3/4 overhand.

Curve has a nice 12-6 drop to it. Tight spin, small but definitive, sharp drop. I could really pick up his wrist breaking and his hand turning over on the curve. Can a batter ever pick that up?

His FB is mostly a 4-seam, not much movement. Not sure about the speed. But it's pretty clear he's not a power pitcher, though 91 or 92 is likely. His FB works because of his off-speed stuff.

It's still early Spring. But the guy doesn't look bad.

We'll probably see him 4 or 5 times this year, so I wanted to take a good look.

    1. Never hurts to know what you are up against. I am seriously considering taking a flyer on Ryu if he's still around at the bottom of my fantasy draft. On the other hand, probably won't have to worry about it as there are a couple of pretty homerish Dodger fans in my league.

    2. Ryu might get a little lost in the shuffle. Longshot, but maybe. No matter if you lose him. Fantasy does weird things with loyalties. It's tough benefiting from Dodger accomplishment.

  2. cain, maddy and vogey all on track

zito is still zito, which is why im hoping gaudin can be solid as a long man...gonna need him

timmy is still a question mark...lets hope the blister fully heals....still cant figure out why some bright medical person hasnt come up with something that heals blisters quick

i really cant see the giants taking a flier on abreu...cant have a utility guy who ends up on the 15 day repeatedly

andres played....k'd....got pissed and broke his bat over his knee....which concerns me, cuz that is a sign of frustration emanating from uncontrolled adhd....and that is torres' pattern....injury, press to come back, frustration, slump....he has gotta be made aware that his role will be more relaxed and to stay within himself

they gotta get tanaka into as many games that are left as possible....with scoots and pablo coming back, wont be ez

at the very least, runzler will be the first pen call up from fresno...glad to see that he is 100 percent

was tweeting with kontos and he is totally stoked to be making his first opening day as a big leaguer....i like that guy...one of the best trades sabean has made....funny thing, stewart has the inside track at being the opening day catcher for the yanks...they really have no depth in so many positions

quick tip...check out olberman's blog. he has a nice piece on the future or lack thereof, of the grapefruit league....mets are looking to move west for the spring? saw today that it took the cards playing the yanks to fill their st site and most of the fans were cards fans

    1. Thanks for the Tip on Olberman. Funny about the Grapefruit League. You know, go back 30-35 years, and it was the Cactus League that was in real trouble. I think they were down to 7 teams, at risk of losing the 7th. And two teams were in Tucson. Might have struggled with 6 teams, but no way with 5. Then what? Can you imagine the MESS it would have been with everyone in FLA.

All that while the Dodgers were (idiotically) sitting in Dodgertown. They could have come out to Phoenix and stabilized things 30 years ago, and made their life a whole lot easier. But no...

I think the tide turned with NL expansion in, what 92 & 97?

I've been to a few STs in AZ. Really enjoyable in the desert, everything close, warm and dry. Fun nightlife. Scottsdale is fantastic. Get a little college town vibe with AZ State. I'm not a golfer, but those courses are incredible and plentiful.

I've only seen FLA games on TV. But it often seems windy, cold, damp. Everything is far away from each other. Used to be jokes about the Vets not wanting to take the ride to Tucson. But what if every game was a ride that far? No comparison between the two leagues.

I wouldn't want any part of FLA for ST. So it's kind of fun to watch the migration west while the Giants sit at ground zero in Scottsdale.

Only concern is the immediate lack of training fields, though. Do they have off-site fields?

    2. I like Keith Olbermann, but he must be a helluva tough guy to work with. I didn't know he had a baseball blog. I'll give it a try, for awhile at least. It's now linked over on the left.

    3. ko is a jerk, but as long as he isnt talking giants or peds, his blog is very good. this recent article on the future of the grapefruit league is one of his better ones, and he is the only person who has touched on the subject.

i can see a very good possibility of teams expanding into nevada or maybe using the palm desert area if it all crashes and burns in florida. only prob would be during the season, cost for extended and rehab would increase for east coast teams needing to send players and staff to the west

but it would be so cool if the west became the mecca for all of pro ball

btw, if you want to comment on one of his pieces, make sure to do it quick, as his blog is unmoderated and the haters come out in force and will spam up the comments section with anti ko vids and other nonsense

in other news...japan crushed sir bambams club....im sticking with them for a threepeat...japan is the wbc version of the ussr hockey team

  3. Get a ping pong table in the clubhouse if Pence brings this into the regular season.

  4. I remember reading, coming out of spring training last year, that MadBum was the best looking pitcher.

One of these years, he is going to put it all together.

    1. Bumgarner deals while Greinke heals. LOL! Here's another one: Greinke's elbow is cranky.
