The Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Akron Rubber Ducks in Game 1 of their Eastern League playoff series by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings. Key Lines:

Blake Miller(2B)- 1 for 4, HR, BB.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.
Carbonell, Mitch Delfino and Tyler Horan all were in the starting lineup fresh in from San Jose. Add in Blake Miller who started the game and Elliott Blair who entered the game in progress, and at one point the lineup featured 5 players who spent most of the season in San Jose. Mejia turned in one of his stronger performances amidst the pressure of a playoff start.

Game Wrap 9/3/2014: Rockies 9 Giants 2
Ryan Vogelsong was chase from this game early midst a veritable hail of home runs, but a couple of rookie relievers wowed with impressive displays of velocity. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .260. Blanco moved over to CF and hit leadoff with Pagan's back hurting again. Batting leadoff did not seem to faze him today.
Joe Panik- 2 for 4. BA= .318. Just call him 2-Hit Joe.
Buster Posey- 2 for 3, SF. BA= .305. Buster Posey is chasing down another batting title. Current leader is Josh Harrison at .313.
Ryan Vogelsong- 5 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, 4 HR. ERA= 4.06. HR's are not Balls In Play, therefore we cannot blame this on BABIP luck. On the other hand…..Coors Field. What a ridiculous ballpark! If there was another game tomorrow, the Giants would likely hit 4 dingers and win 9-2 or 12-3 or some other crazy score. Tough to see the Rockies ever achieving long term success playing in a place like that.
Erik Cordier- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. I think we just found out why the Giants considered Heath Hembree expendable. Cordier threw a total of 25 pitches, 21 FB's, 16 hit triple digits, 7 registered 101 MPH. The pitch that struck out Arenado was a laser beam!
Hunter Strickland- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Strickland threw 14 pitches, 11 for strikes and sat at 99 MPH.

The Giants turned the tables on the Rockies, roaring back from a 6-0 deficit to win going away. Key Lines:
Angel Pagan- 1 for 4, BB, HBP. BA= .303. Pagan reached base in half of his 6 PA's. The top 3 batters for the Giants reached base 9 out of 16 PA's. They scored 6 of the Giants 12 runs.
Joe Panik- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .314. Panik has solidified the 2B position as well as the #2 slot in the lineup, enabling a perfectly good #2 hitter, Hunter Pence, but one with more power, to move further down the lineup into better RBI situations.
Buster Posey- 3 for 5, 2 2B, HR(19). BA= .302. Buster crosses the .300 BA mark. He played 1B in this one and scored 3 runs while driving in 4. Just a monster game at the plate, which has become his norm in the last 2 weeks.

He hit another ball that Charlie Blackmon picked off the top of the fence in right-center. Just a ferocious hitter! I'm going to say Mike Napoli with much better catcher defense. How's that? With Morse on the shelf for at least a week and probably longer with an oblique strain, Isn't the Giants best lineup Posey at first with Susac catching against any pitcher? Oh, and Susac is BIG!

Ysla finishes up a nice season. Diaz scuffled this year, but finishes with a strong outing.

Several Giants relievers, including Stetson Woods, got shelled in a 12 run 6'th inning. This was the AZL championship game which obviously the Giants lost.

Someone asked my opinion of the Brown callup in the comments section of an earlier post. Here's what I think: I have come to believe that Gary Brown is probably a guy who responds better to positive feedback and reinforcement than negative. I don't think it is entirely random luck that he went 0 for 3 in Sunday's game and 3 for 5 in yesterday's. While I don't think that a pennant race is any place to be massaging the feelings of a sensitive prospect, I do hope he gets some chances and makes the most of them. I suspect the talent is still there. He needs to find the right situation to make it work on the field.

Tim Hudson and the Giants looked like they were waltzing to their second win of the day with a 7-2 lead in the 6'th inning when the music suddenly stopped and the game turned into a Coors Field Special. We all know how those turn out! Key Lines:
Joe Panik- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .310. Panik just keeps cranking out the hits, even if a lot of them are squibbers and bloopers. Hey, if you put the ball in play, good things can happen! He made a key error on a dropped throw from Pablo Sandoval in the disastrous 6'th inning that helped keep the Rockies' rally alive.

Huge day for Pence as he had the game winning hit in the suspended game and ripped a 3 run HR in the first inning to get the Giants off to a great start in this one. That is why, even though he can hit leadoff or second in the order, you like his power a bit lower so he can come up in the first inning with runners on base. Pence is putting himself into the conversation for NL MVP. His current fWAR of 5.4 trails only Giancarlo Stanton and Jonathan Lucroy who leads with 5.6.
Brandon Crawford- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .230. Crawford seems to have found whatever was missing from his stroke for 2 months. A big September from him would be huge for the Giants.

The Giants and Rockies resumed play of their suspended game from May 22 in the bottom of the 6'th inning. Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla held the Rockies scoreless the rest of the way while Andrew Susac started a 2 run rally in the 8'th inning with Hunter Pence driving in the go-ahead run with a double and Travis Ishikawa driving in the insurance run. Key Lines:

Brown gets passed over for a September call up despite already being on the 40 man roster. You have to think that there is something the Giants are down on him about that we don't fully know about. Just speculation, of course, but he's a former first round pick who can't even get a call up with expanded rosters? When he already has a 40 man roster spot? Not that he's exactly broken down the doors, but if the Giants still have any hope for him at all, it seems like maybe it's time to try a little positive reinforcement and feedback rather than continuing to slap him in the face at every opportunity. If they don't have any hope, then why not trade him to another organization or simply release him?

Blach pitched well enough this year, but you have to wonder about the K and BB numbers. Okert seems like a fairly good bet to eventually fill a lefty reliever role with the Giants when Affeldt and Lopez are done.
High A High Desert Mavericks stampeded the San Jose Giants 9-6:
Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 3 for 5. BA= .344.
Ryan Lollis(DH)- 3 for 5. BA= .257.
Tyler Horan(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(9). BA= .317.
Chuckie Jones(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(15). BA= .258.

Carbonell continues to show a hit tool. Horan has torn up the Cal League since his midseason promotion. Can't wait to see what he does in Richmond next year. Can Chuckie Jones hack the EL next year? Jake Smith had been lights out in relief, but stumbles badly in his first shot at starting. Johnson has shown the ability to go multiple innings.
Low A Charleston River Dogs beat the Augusta Greenjackets 5-0:

Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 3.57.
Nice to see Gregorio finish on a strong note.
Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Boise Hawks 4-3 in 10 innings:
Hunter Cole(LF)- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .250.
Shilo McCall(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .199.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.70.
Eury Sanchez(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(14). ERA= 3.48.
Disappointing season for Shilo McCall, who I had high hopes for at the beginning of the season. I would say his future is very cloudy at this point. Gotta find some traction somewhere. I would say Beede's first pro season has been OK, not great. Want to see more next year, probably in SJ, I would think.
Rookie AZL Giants beat the Mariners 6-2 to advance to the AZL Championship game today:

The young kids are leading the way for the AZL Giants. Gotta like that!
The Giants called up 5 players for the first day of expanded rosters:
Mike Kickham, LHP- Kickham kind of stumbled down the stretch in Fresno, so this is a bit of a surprise. He is another LH arm in the bullpen.
Juan Perez- Rides the Fresno-SF shuttle once again.
Chris Dominguez- 20/20 season for Fresno and played a whole bunch of positions. He still strikes out a whole lot, though. Added bonus: He gets added to the 40 man roster!
Guillermo Quiroz- Giants needed to add a 3'rd catcher and Quiroz was the only one who is likely MLB ready.
Hunter Strickland- Hard throwing RHP reliever. I do want to see any innings he gets to pitch. Possible future MLB bullpen arm, possibly even a future closer?
No Gary Brown and no Jarrett Parker….yet. See my comments re. Brown above. Maybe they will get the call after today's final Fresno game?
And Tyler Horan reportedly gets called to Richmond to help in the EL playoffs!

Brown gets passed over for a September call up despite already being on the 40 man roster. You have to think that there is something the Giants are down on him about that we don't fully know about. Just speculation, of course, but he's a former first round pick who can't even get a call up with expanded rosters? When he already has a 40 man roster spot? Not that he's exactly broken down the doors, but if the Giants still have any hope for him at all, it seems like maybe it's time to try a little positive reinforcement and feedback rather than continuing to slap him in the face at every opportunity. If they don't have any hope, then why not trade him to another organization or simply release him?
