Down on the Farm: 9/3/2014

The Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Akron Rubber Ducks in Game 1 of their Eastern League playoff series by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings.  Key Lines:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 1 for 4, 3B, Sac.
Blake Miller(2B)- 1 for 4, HR, BB.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.

Carbonell, Mitch Delfino and Tyler Horan all were in the starting lineup fresh in from San Jose.  Add in Blake Miller who started the game and Elliott Blair who entered the game in progress, and at one point the lineup featured 5 players who spent most of the season in San Jose.  Mejia turned in one of his stronger performances amidst the pressure of a playoff start.

  1. Speaking of minor league playoffs, former Giants farmhands Escobar and Hembree took care of game one for the Pawtucket Red Sox. Escobar went 8.2 of 1 run ball with 7 Ks and 0 BBs and 6 H. Hembree retired all 4 batters he faced to pick up the win in extras.

    Lookin' goooood.

    1. Nice to see Escobar play well, but he kind of struck me as a Sanchez guy. Good one day, bad the next. Yes he was young, but he didn't really improved (and probably regressed). Hembree never was going to get a shot, nor should he reallyw when we've got two guys capable of hitting 100. I would love to see a pen of: Casilla, Lopez, Cordier, Affeldt, Strickland, Machi, Freak +1. Not sure what contracts expire relative to Kontos, Machi, Guitterez and Petit though. Maybe Timmy goes as long man.

    2. I guess Mejia is a "Sanchez guy" as well. Perhaps even more so. I like Escobar over Mejia. I gather the Red Sox did too or maybe it was the other way around Sabes said no. Who knows?

    3. Personally, I will take Mejia over Escobar. He's younger and bigger.

    4. The Sox, I'm guessing, chose players close to being MLB-ready. I doubt that one can read much about predictions of eventual success on the part of either the Sox or the Giants, from the specific players traded. By the way, I see that one of the writers for mlb.com says that the Peavy for Escobar/ Hembree trade was arguably the strongest midseason trade in baseball on the part of the Giants. Peavy has been indispensable for them.

    5. Mejia same age as Escobar by age/level though, right?

Bigger may not be better. May get too big and have some injury issues. Missed some time this year. Escobar very solidly built.

    6. 6'3", 195 is definitely not too big. I believe Escobar missed a little time with some sort in injury too. Neither has had any serious injury issues. AA vs AAA is negligible. I'll take the guy who is a full year younger.

    7. I guess I'll take the guy that had better numbers at AA and A+ at same age. Mejia with only 6.8K/9 at AA. That's not particularly inspiring.

At least his last couple outings have been strong.

    8. Escobar had a ticking clock, since he has been on the 40-man for (at least) 2 years. And he did not look ready for majors this year.

  2. Kelby also went 1 for 4, 2b..and reached on an error by ss....he also pulled a sick double play to end the 10th inning!!

    5. But I have acknowledged with some regularity that Kelby seems to be able to field the SS position quite well.

  3. Nice game by Mejia.

All things being equal, you give more weight to the latest performance data, especially for a young player who is still developing. Moreover, this is a playoff game.
