Game Wrap 7/3/2013: Reds 3 Giants 2
The Giants put up a fight for this one. That's progress! Unfortunately, the guys who are being paid to drive in runs failed to deliver and wasted opportunities turned into another loss in extra innings. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 0 for 3, 3 BB, Assist. BA= .274. You can't ask for much more out of your leadoff man than to get on base 3 times in 6 PA's.
Tony Abreu- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(1). BA= .326. If this guy is phsically capable of playing, he has to be in there somewhere until he cools down.
Buster Posey- 0 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .312. So, the Giants first 3 batters get on base a combined 7 times in 16 PA's. that's a .437 OBP. They got just 2 runs out of that plus the whole rest of the lineup.
Hunter Pence + Pablo Sandoval- 0 for 10. 6 runners left on base. A team is not going to score many runs when it's 4 and 5 hitters go a combined 0 for 10.
Barry Zito- 4 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.44. Zito was PO'd that Bochy pulled him in the 5'th with a 2-1 lead, runners on 1'st and 3'rd with no outs, but Bochy has been burned just too often by leaving his starter in 1 batter too long. Gotta go into playoff mode to try to get out of this hole.

The Dodgers outslugged the Rockies 10-8 to those two teams are now tied for 2'nd place, 2.5 games behind the leaders. Yasiel Puig got shaken up on a collision with the RF wall. The Padres lost to the BoSox 2-1 to fall into 4'th place, 3.5 games behind.
Matt Cain takes the mound tomorrow afternoon facing Mike Leake trying to salvage a win out of the 4 game series.

Game Wrap 7/2/2013: Reds 3 Giants 0
It seemed like a matter of time, given the weakness and passivity of recent Giants offensive efforts. Tonight, Homer Bailey dropped the hammer on them allowing just one baserunner, a walk to Gregor Blanco over 9 frames in Cincinnati. Not much else about the game matters. Key Lines:
Tim Lincecum- 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 4.66. Timmy did not pitch badly, but he had to pitch shutout ball just to stay even. Timmy just does not have the consistency from batter-to-batter and inning-to-inning to pitch shutout ball these days. He clearly has good stuff. You don't strike out 8 MLB batters in under 6 innings without it. It's all about inconsistency and unreliable command.
Homer Bailey(Reds)- 9 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.57. Bailey has always had the tools and the stuff. He has been a lot like the current version of Timmy in that he has not been able to harness that talent into sustained success. With the way he pitched at the end of last season, including an no-hitter, I thought he was poised for a breakout season this year. So far that has not happened. The Giants have had a lot of success getting opposing pitchers out of slumps lately, though. Certainly, Bailey has always had the talent.
With the loss, the Giants remained 3 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs who lost to the Mets 9-1, but they dropped into last place, 0.5 games behind the Dodgers who blanked the Rockies 8-0 and are now 2.5 games out tied for 3'rd place. The Rockies remain 1.5 games behind the D'Backs while the Padres lost to the BoSox 4-1 to remain 2.5 games back, tied with the Dodgers for 3'rd place.
It does not get any easier tomorrow as Barry Zito faces wunderkind Tony Cingrani.

Game Wrap 7/1/2013: Reds 8 Giants 1
A rookie pitcher rushed to the majors and trying to find his footing goes up against a good hitting team in one of the more hitter-friendly ballparks in the country. The results were predictable. Mike Kickham's 3'rd MLB start did not go well as the Giants got blown out early. The game was mercifully completed early due to rain. Key Lines:
Brandon Belt- 1 for 1, HR(9), BB. BA= .266. It always amazes me how polarizing Brandon Belt is to fans on the internet and how irrational both extremes are about him. On one side, people literally think he is the best hitter on the team and would rather have him in the lineup than Buster Freaking Posey. On the other side are those who say he is a failure and it's already set in stone that he won't be on the roster next season.
At this point in the season, Belt's season totals are decent, though not outstanding. His monthly splits are a little more interesting though:
April .235/.287/.353. I think we would all agree those are pretty bad. But, as ogc has repeatedly pointed out, he had a severe gastrointestinal illness at the start of the season and did not regain full strength for at least 2-3 weeks.
May .266/.363/.506. Wow! I did not realize that Belt had slugged >.500 for the month of May! That is an OPS of .869 which is getting close to elite status if he were to keep it up.
June .289/.344/.458. A better BA but lower OBP and SLG and a much lower IsoP. Still, an OPS of .802 is not terrible.
Throwing out April as an outlier due to the illness, his combined slash line for May/June is .278/.350/.481. OPS= .831. That is not at all bad. In fact, there are just 9 MLB first basemen with more than 200 AB's on the season with a higher OPS! Even with April stats included, his OPS is #15 for first basemen in MLB.
At some point, the Giants may need to decide whether to move Buster Posey to first base full time. If and when that happens, I doubt they will let Belt stand in the way. They will either move Belt to LF or trade him. That day has not arrived and is unlikely to before next season. It would be difficult, if not impossible for the Giants to find a replacement for Belt's offense at first base let alone his defense. I believe Brandon Belt's future with the Giants is alive and well. Heck, I could even envision him improving his game to the point the Giants would have to find some other position for Buster Posey to move to!
Mike Kickham- 2.2 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 13.94. Kickham had a 1,2,3 first inning and struck out Joey Votto. Once the Reds got things going, though, the roof caved in. Kid has good stuff. He just isn't ready to handle a good MLB lineup. Back to Fresno!
With the Loss, amazingly, the Giants did not lose ground to the NL West leading D'Backs who lost their 4'th straight game, this time to the Mets, 5-4 in extra-innings. The Giants remain in 4'th place, 3 games behind the D'Backs. The second place Rockies were idle and gained 0.5 games to 1.5 out. The Padres lost to the Marlins 4-0 to remain in 3'rd place 2.5 games off the pace. The Last Place Dodgers, who might not be in Last Place much longer, were idle and are now 3.5 games behind the D'Backs and just 0.5 games behind the Giants.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 1, HR(9), BB. BA= .266. It always amazes me how polarizing Brandon Belt is to fans on the internet and how irrational both extremes are about him. On one side, people literally think he is the best hitter on the team and would rather have him in the lineup than Buster Freaking Posey. On the other side are those who say he is a failure and it's already set in stone that he won't be on the roster next season.
At this point in the season, Belt's season totals are decent, though not outstanding. His monthly splits are a little more interesting though:
April .235/.287/.353. I think we would all agree those are pretty bad. But, as ogc has repeatedly pointed out, he had a severe gastrointestinal illness at the start of the season and did not regain full strength for at least 2-3 weeks.
May .266/.363/.506. Wow! I did not realize that Belt had slugged >.500 for the month of May! That is an OPS of .869 which is getting close to elite status if he were to keep it up.
June .289/.344/.458. A better BA but lower OBP and SLG and a much lower IsoP. Still, an OPS of .802 is not terrible.
Throwing out April as an outlier due to the illness, his combined slash line for May/June is .278/.350/.481. OPS= .831. That is not at all bad. In fact, there are just 9 MLB first basemen with more than 200 AB's on the season with a higher OPS! Even with April stats included, his OPS is #15 for first basemen in MLB.
At some point, the Giants may need to decide whether to move Buster Posey to first base full time. If and when that happens, I doubt they will let Belt stand in the way. They will either move Belt to LF or trade him. That day has not arrived and is unlikely to before next season. It would be difficult, if not impossible for the Giants to find a replacement for Belt's offense at first base let alone his defense. I believe Brandon Belt's future with the Giants is alive and well. Heck, I could even envision him improving his game to the point the Giants would have to find some other position for Buster Posey to move to!
Mike Kickham- 2.2 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 13.94. Kickham had a 1,2,3 first inning and struck out Joey Votto. Once the Reds got things going, though, the roof caved in. Kid has good stuff. He just isn't ready to handle a good MLB lineup. Back to Fresno!
With the Loss, amazingly, the Giants did not lose ground to the NL West leading D'Backs who lost their 4'th straight game, this time to the Mets, 5-4 in extra-innings. The Giants remain in 4'th place, 3 games behind the D'Backs. The second place Rockies were idle and gained 0.5 games to 1.5 out. The Padres lost to the Marlins 4-0 to remain in 3'rd place 2.5 games off the pace.
