Game Wrap 6/3/2012: Giants 2 Cubs 0
The Giants got a great game from Barry Zito and a multitude of sparkling defensive plays, but the difference in this game was speed, team speed on the part of the Giants, particularly from Gregor Blanco and Angel Pagan. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 0 for 3, BB. BA= .266. Blanco made a nice running catch of a ball hit into Triples Alley by Starlin Castro that I think probably would have been fairly routine for Nate too, but there's no way Nate scores the insurance run in the bottom of the 8'th inning. After Blanco drew a 1 out walk and Theriot flied out to CF, Melky hit a fairly routine single to LF. Blanco was running with the pitch and by the time Soriano fielded the ball in medium-deep LF, Blanco was already a blur approaching 3B. Tim Flannery waived him on, but I'm not sure Flannery was anything more than an interested bystander. The play was in front of Blanco all the way and I'm pretty sure he would not and possibly could not have stopped if Flannery gave him the stop sign. I don't know if Soriano had a brain cramp of if he didn't think he had a chance to get Blanco, but his throw came into 2B holding Melky to a single.
Angel Pagan- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .314. Pagan made a nice running acrobatic catch(he might have misjudged the ball a bit) on another long drive by Starlin Castro, but again, it was his speed on the basepaths that was the real difference. Pagan doubled with one out in the 5'th. After a strikeout by Hector, Arias poked a grounder through the hole into RF. With 2 outs, Pagan was running on contact, but the ball didn't go deep and the RF was charging. The throw appeared to beat Pagan by a couple of steps but he as coming fast and slid into home plate. I'm not sure if the catcher bobbled the ball or if he tried to apply the tag on Pagan before he caught the ball. At any rate the ball rolled loose and Pagan had scored the first run of the game.
Hector Sanchez- 0 for 3. BA= .273. Hector was once again the Zito Whisperer, and earned some toughness points with his AB in the 7'th. He fouled a ball off his left leg just above the ankle that dropped him to the ground in severe pain. It looked like he might have to come out of the game, but he managed to shake it off and get back in the batter's box. Next pitch he fouled off the same shin about 4 inches below the knee. Down on the ground again. Fortunately it wasn't in the same location as the first blow, but you had to think Hector was coming out of the game. He picked himself back up, belatedly put on a shin guard and finished the AB with a flyout to CF. He stayed in the game and finished it up the behind the plate too. Gamer! I'm guessing that earned some serious respect from his teammates. Wear a shin guard up there, Hector!

Romo was a much better choice to face Castro and Soriano, 2 RH hitters with the potential to tie the game with one swing. Castro, in particular, had hit the ball very hard twice already in the game. It appeared Romo might have re-injured his knee on the final comebacker by Soriano.
With the Win, the Giants climbed to 6 games over .500 and to 3 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers who lost to the Rockies 3-2. D'Backs are 8 games back after a 6-0 win over the Pathetic Padres while the Rockies are 9.5 games off the pace. The Pathetic ones are 15.5 games behind in last place. Giants have won 7 of their last 10 while the Dodgers have lost 7 of 10. The Giants still trail in the Wild Card race depending on the outcome of the Mets game against the Cardinals tonight.
The series against the Cubs extends into Monday as Ryan Vogelsong goes for the sweep facing Jeff "Mullet Boy" Samardzija.

The Giants offense managed just 7 baserunners in the game, but bunched 4 of them in a 2 run sixth inning. Matt Cain and the bullpen limited the Cubs to 1 run for the win. Key Lines:
Matt Cain- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 2.62. Cain got his 6'th win of the season against 2 losses to run his career W-L record to .500, 75-75. It's difficult to quantify, but when you look at the IP and ERA over the years, it should be closer to 100-50 in his age 27 season and on a solid pace for a HOF career. As it is, he probably has an outside shot. I do think HOF voters will have to adjust their criteria over then next decade or two with less emphasis on W-L, although we all know the sabermetric types don't think much of Matt Cain either. Anyway, I think what I'm trying to say is Matt Cain is probably about 1/3 of the way through his career with the possibility that he's just entering the peak third. He's already done some remarkable things despite possibly the worst run support ever.

I hope it all turns out to be nothing, but I would hope Pablo learns from this that ballplayers with $ multi-million contacts are targets, and be more circumspect in his actions.

Game Wrap 6/1/2012: Giants 4 Cubs 3
What had been Madison Bumgarner's best pitched game of the season almost became a nail biter in the 9'th inning, but the Cubs late rally fell just short as the Giants gained another game on the leaders of the NL West. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 0 for 3, BB. BA= .282. Blanco led off the game with a walk, which he seems to do more often than not, and came around to score from first on Riot's double into the LF corner.
Ryan Theriot- 3 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .234. Riot has been hitting the ball hard for awhile but now they are starting to find the gaps for base hits. He's solidifying his hold on the 2B/#2 hitter job.
Melky Cabrera- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .376. Melky quieted fears that he might be in for a regression in June. In addition to the two hits, he smoked another one to the base of the CF wall that was caught.
Buster Posey- 1 for 3, SF. BA= .295. SF, RBI single. Just another day at the office for Buster.
Madison Bumgarner- 8 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 11 K's. ERA= 3.04. This is an excellent pitching line, but Bumgarner pitched even better. The 2 hits to start the 9'th came around to score on Soriano's blast off Casilla. Before that, Bumgarner was as good as I've seen him, which is saying something.
Santiago Casilla- 0.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 1.54. Strange appearance for Casilla. He came out wild high. I'm not sure what Soriano hit for the HR, but it wasn't close to the strike zone. I think it may have been a hanging breaking ball that was up around the top of the shoulder wide of the plate. Soriano reatched out and kind of tomahawked it over the LF wall. Later Casilla tweaked his knee trying to field a swinging bunt that stopped in no-man's land between him and Arias coming in from 3B.
Javier Lopez- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1). ERA= 3.55. Fortunately, the Cubs did not have any RH bats on the bench at this point and Lopez made quick work of the two lefties he faced. Woulda been the right move to bring him in even if Casilla hadn't tweaked his knee.
Bruce Bochy- Right move to pull Bumgarner after giving up the two leadoff singles and the RH hitting Soriano coming up. I know Soriano isn't exactly Ryan Braun, but he had hit something like 7 HR's in his last 11 games or something like that.
With the Win, the Giants pulled up to 4 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers who got pounded by the Rockies 13-3. The third place D'Backs lost to the Padres 7-1 to remain 9 games off the pace while the Rockies gained a game to 9.5 games behind. The Padres remained 14.5 games behind and in last place after their win.

Brown hits his first dinger of the year. The thing I've been most impressed with Joseph is his ability to hit for average. That tells me his power has a better chance of translating to the majors. Not sure if he passes the ugly GF test though. Hey, maybe someone should to an ugly GF study and submit the results to Fangraphs! Vessella has been pitching a lot better of late. I believe this was his best outing since coming into the organization. There's always a place for a LHP who can get hitters out.

It looks like Crick was doing OK until the 5'th inning when the wheels came off.

Chris Dominguez makes his AAA debut. Didn't see that coming. Probably because Roger K hurt his shoulder crashing into a wall and is on the DL. MRI results pending. That's 3 dominant starts in a row for Petit.
