It was a rough night for Matt Wilkinson as Rafael Devers and the Punch and Judy Show could not overcome an early 7-0 deficit. Key Lines:
Rafael Devers 1B- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(33), BB, R, 5 RBI. BA= .256. Wow! Devers is in another zone right now. The problem was that 9 other hits and 5 other walks produced just one additional run. Bryce Eldridge DH was the only other hitter with an XBH and he did not figure into the scoring. The Giants were 4 for 14 with RISP but still had 11 LOB. Jonah Cox PH/CF and Turner Hill LF had 2 hits each.
Matt Wilkinson LHP- 3 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's, 3 HR. ERA= 6.14. The fastball was not invisible. An error by Christian Koss didn't help but Wilkinson also did not pitch well and was torched for 3 home runs, all by RH hitters, Mark Vientos, Francisco Alvarez and Bo Bichette.
Yunior Marte RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.72. Marte's fastball didn't quite have the zip that it did in his previous appearance, ranging from 90 to 94 MPH. His best pitch was what PitchFx called a slider but looked more like a splitter with a late break down and he was able to mostly keep batters off balance but mixing his pitches and locations. He did eat 5 innings to spare a very overused bullpen though he appeared to be running on fumes by his 5'th inning of work.
Since we are looking for positives here, those would be 1. Another huge game for Devers. 2. The continued ability of The Kids to make contact and get on base and 3. A gutsy performance by Yunior Marte although his loss of velocity must be a concern.
Giants fans get another look at Anthony Molina RHP today facing Zac Thornton LHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.77.
What's the difference between Turner Hill and JH Lee? $20M! Trade him, make RF available to all the rising OFs
ReplyDeleteThe Mets did a lot better at scoring their runners than the Giants who actually had more hits and walks.
ReplyDeleteContrasting to the production gains by Devers as the season has progressed, J H Lee has fallen from very good, to respectful, to downright pathetic.
And who are these pitchers? Matt Wilkinson LHP and Yunior Marte RHP? They began this year in AA. Marte was in A ball, not A+, last year.
Why is it so hard for the team to start and play Cox? He produces. Hill produces. The bottom four don't. Gilbert is borderline.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what your problem is. Cox and Hill are playing.
DeleteGiants are passing on Ryan Walker for 2026 and are auditioning former Milwaukee Brewer 31-year-old Joel Kuhnel for the rest of the year.
ReplyDeleteGiven the state of the 'pen, this is a win-win.
Is he any good?
Other than a 5-game stint with Tampa Bay in 2024, the answer is probably no. The Giants must think otherwise or are just trying to help a worn-out 'pen for the few weeks left in the season...
Is Eldridge a worse 1Bman than Devers?
ReplyDeleteBased on Fangraphs defensive metrics they are about the same.
