I attended this game. A few observations, in no particular oder...
ReplyDeleteGavin Kilen: Not a big night on the stat line, but this guy knows how to control the bat and the strike zone Not afraid to get behind in the count and hit the ball the other way when he does. Knows how to work a walk. Is very confident in his batting eye – he took a few very close pitches that turned out to be balls. Not afraid to hit the ball the other way, if pitch location dictates. Hits nothing but line drives - truly a walking doubles machine. I can see why the Giants like him and will likely trade Luis Arraez. I genuinely believe they feel this fellow can take over at 2B, as soon as next season. By the way, he plays a very competent shortstop – he made a very nice scoop of a short hop ball to throw and catch a quick runner at first base. I believe he will be in the majors next year.
Trevor Cohen: He was the second pick in 2025 draft, behind Kilen. Third round (Giants lost their second round pick in signing Willy Adames). He's the guy that hit everything at Rutgers. Makes a ton of contact. Not a big power guy. Another line drive guy. He is similar to Gavin Kilen in two other respects: #1 he is more skilled up than he is tooled up – not great at any one thing, but good at many things. Not a big hulking guy, but he also hits the ball with authority, hits the ball hard the other way. He had an opposite field double that missed me in a home run by 2 feet. Plays his position (CF) very well. I don't know if he's going to be in the majors soon, given that they have both Jonah Cox and Drew Gilbert ahead of him. We'll see. All in all this could be a very under the radar guy I can see why the Giants like him.
Dale Stanavich: LHP. Older prospect (27). Miami had him for a while and gave up. Giants signed him this spring. Throws hard – he was at 96 and the gun used at the stadium (Somerset NJ, Yankees AA affiliate) had the other pitchers at or below 90/91. Ferocious “here it comes, try and hit it” approach. A bit wild – 4 batters faced, two walked, two struck out (swinging). If he can build more control, the Giants may have something here.
Dakota Jordan: Wanted to see him, he was the reason I drove down. Unfortunately, he went on the 7-day IL the day before.
Regards...

Luis Durango (Yankees AA): A very small, very slender OF with a trait I have never seen in organized baseball. Bats L. Holds bat with right hand 6 inches above the knob, and left hand 6 inches above his right hand. Yes, bats choked up, with hands 6 inches apart. He was 2 for 4.
re. Durango. Back to the future? That's the old Ty Cobb grip.
DeleteI attended the SJ Giants vs RC Quakes game last night. I’m certainly not as keen an observer as many of you readers but here are some observations for what they are worth.
ReplyDeleteKeyner Martinez- throws hard, up to 95-96 with the fast ball and high 80’s with the slider. Tossed in occasional off speed and breaking balls. Had bouts of wildness. Got touched up when he fell behind and had to come into the zone. When he was on, the slider made batters take weak swings and they couldn’t catch up to the high fastball. Went 5 full innings and was still pumping in the mid 90’s in his final inning so his stamina appears to be improving- keeping him firmly on the starter track.
Josuar Gonzalez. Went hitless but seemed to have a pretty good idea of the strike zone. Laid off a number of close pitches. The whole team was pounding the ball into the ground against the Quakes starter but one of Josuar’s groundouts was a one hop bullet at the shortstop that nearly knocked him over. Played shortstop smoothly and has a rocket of an arm, so much so that he almost seems to take a tick too much time before unloading. I’m sure the coaches will work on that.
Luis Hernandez. Also went hitless but unlike Gonzalez he went down in pretty short at bats. In the field he made the routine plays but looked a bit hesitant and allowed a hard smash to get by him. But he didn’t look overwhelmed and considering he is 17 years old he looks like he will make the adjustments necessary.
Other random thoughts/observations. Cam Maldonado looks like a ball player and had some good swings and looks pretty good in right field. Andy Polanco is an absolute string bean and probably needs to put on a lot of weight and muscle. Jeremiah Jenkins is a massive human and a little ragged in the field, but looks like he has a lot of power potential.
Gabriel Davallilo of the Quakes looks like he was signed off a beer league team- he actually makes Raffie look ripped!
I have seen this Gabriel Davallilo you speak of. My friend and I commented on him while watching the game on Wednesday. He's like Pablo Sandoval with a lot less athleticism.
DeleteNot sure what to make of Andy Polanco. He runs like a gazelle in the outfield and then drops the ball. Seems to hold his own in the batter's box but looks completely un-equipped to handle inside fastballs. I noticed when he stands, his knees are inside his hips but then his feet are farther apart than his knees. There is some obvious athleticism there but a very odd body habitus.
