The Giants brought their hitting shoes and needed them to hold off the Brewers in a high-scoring game. Key Lines:
Casey Schmitt LF/2B/1B- 2 for 5, HR(13), SF, R, 2 RBI. BA= .282. Schmitt led off the game with a home run. He also made a highlight reel catch in LF. He's been the Giants best all-around player through the first third of the season.
Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, SF, R, RBI. BA= .325. Luis Two Hits does it again.
Willy Adames SS- 2 for 6, 2B, R, RBI. BA= .244. Adames is hitting .298/.338/.529 over his last 30 games.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 4 for 5, 2B, 3 R, RBI. BA= .322. Lee is on some kind of heater. He is 19 for 29(.655) since coming off the IL on May 29. In that span he has two 4-hit games and a 5-hit game. He now joins Luis Arraez in contention for the NL batting title.
Bryce Eldridge DH- 3 for 4, BB, 2 R, RBI. BA= .286. I don't think Eldridge is going back down and talk of him being a situational player has died down. If the Giants are to rebuild, he's the guy they need to build around.
Matt Chapman 3B- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .235. Chapman runs hot and cold. The 3-hit game comes after going 0 for 7 in his previous two. Overall, the BA is where you expect it to be but his power is way off with just 2 HR's on the season.
Eric Haase C- 1 for 4, HR(4), BB, R, 4 RBI. BA= .282. If 3-run HR's win games, grand slams are even better. Haase has an fWAR of 0.7, Daniel Susac is at 0.9. Patrick Bailey is at 0.0 and is batting just .143 since the trade.
Drew Gilbert CF/LF- 2 for 5, R. BA= .236. Gilbert also robbed Andrew Vaughn of a 2-run HR in the 7'th inning.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(4). ERA= 3.58. On a day that nobody else pitched well, Kilian gets the Save. He now leads the team. Ryan Walker is second with 3 and he's not on the active roster.
The Giants move on to Chicago for a weekend series against the Cubs with Robbie Ray LHP facing Edward Cabrera RHP in the first game which starts at 11:20 PDT.
I am on a baseball trip to see the Giants. Was in Milwaukee yesterday and will catch Friday's and Sunday's games in Chicago. Yesterday's game was incredibly entertaining. Giants as a team got twenty hits with everyone contributing except for Devers who only got one hit which turned out to be inconsequential. Wilkin Ramos made the game tense by not throwing strikes and giving the Brewers. Giants also brutalized the Brewers pitching staff with hits and injuries. DL Hall took himself out with an arm issue. Replaced by Grant Anderson who Eldridge hit with a laser line drive up the middle. Great to see so many Giants with the right approach at the plate: not jumping on early pitches in the count, then spraying line drives. Great game and I was surprised at how many Giants fans were there and boy do the Brewers fans still love Willy Adames.
ReplyDeleteDue to the "unorthodox baseball travel schedules now the last few years, does "jet lag" contributes to poor team performance ? Bob in Dixon.
ReplyDeleteFun game to watch with action in nearly every inning. I do have to say, watching reveals some things a box score can’t. For instance, how many throwing errors have Chapman and Adames made that a league average first baseman would have spared them? Adames was charged with one yesterday that Devers should have had.
ReplyDeleteA couple other observations:
1. Lee is keeping his shoulders much tighter and the bat path to the ball looks like Arraez is wearing off on him!
2. Casey Schmitt can hit and I admire his willingness to play multiple positions, but I’m glad we’re not in a playoff hunt because he takes some adventures out in LF.
3. I don’t think I’ve seen a giant lefty in a while with Eldridge’s ability to catch up to an inside pitch and keep his hands in. Not that he’s in the same orbit, but his ability to cover the inside zone is like Judges ability to do the same from the right.
4. Our bullpen sucks. Not way around it. We suck and who can blame Vitello throwing bullpen spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.
Since Houser can barely get you 5, I would slide him down to the bullpen and let Whisenhunt take his spot and assess how the switch works.
ReplyDeleteMake batting tittle great again!
ReplyDeleteI didn’t think Eldridge was ready but I may be wrong - I hope so. However, he is only 21 yo! With his elite power potential and age/performance in the minors I don’t think he got the hype he deserved. I believe in him for the future whether or not he is ready now.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, it doesn't matter if he is ready or not. Bludgeoning PCL pitching is not going to help him get ready. He looks like he can be an elite hitter. The sooner and more he faces MLB pitching, the sooner he achieves his potential.
DeleteAgreed! He seems to have weathered the first storm of scouting MLB teams had for him. He’s going to display some weakness they’ll try to exploit and then the learning curve begins again. He seems to have a good idea of the strike zone, which usually speeds up the process for young hitters.
DeletePersonally, I do think it matters if he was ready or not...if he wasn't ready and was hitting .111 it would be a disaster. But, I was wrong about him being ready, the people that matter who were right, were the Giants. Good call, Hopefully, this all continues with ELDRIDGE then they can figure out what to do with DEVERS!!
DeleteMore crow eating, the last two games were impressive when i was expecting the worst. Winning a pitchers duel and a slugfest against one of the best teams in the NL with contributions from many. The Giants should be riding high but that is also the time when we get the patented Giants faceplant!
Be nice if R ay would have some control today and make ot to six innings.

The Giants were right? They brought Eldridge up to be a bench player. He forced their hand. My point is once you make a decision to bring up a prospect of Eldridge's potential who is crushing AAA, you don't bring him up to be a bench player and you don't send him back down if he struggles. You have the patience and conviction to give him an extended look. If he doesn't come around after 2-300 PA's you can reassess whether your original evaluation was correct or not.
DeleteCan we have a serious conversation about how silly it is the Friday game is 1:20 CT and the Sunday game is 7:30? I’m going Sunday because I’m traveling for work and that’s just a needlessly late game.
