The Giants bullpen collectively gave up 7 runs over the final 3 innings to blow a 6-2 lead and a Quality Start by Landen Roupp. Key Lines:
Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .242. Chapman appears to be the designated leadoff batter against LHP's. He did his job, getting on base 3 times in 4 PA's but did not figure in the scoring due to the #2, 3 and 4 hitters, Eldridge, Schmitt and Devers going a combined 1 for 11 with a walk.
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 3, HR(14), BB, 2 R, RBI. BA= .225. And just like that, Adames is on track to hit 30 HR's on the season. As was the case last season, likely too little, too late.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 1 for 4, 3B, R, 3 RBI. BA= .332. Lee's bases-loaded triple in the 6'th inning keyed a 5-run rally allowing Landen Roupp to leave the game with a 6-2 lead.
Victor Bericoto LF- 1 for 4, HR(3), R, 2 RBI. BA= .231. Bericoto's HR came on the heels of JHL's triple and was identical location and distance as last night. He also made another great throw to nail Tyler Soderstrom at 2B. Bericoto is making for some tough decisions for the Giants management after Heliot Ramos gets back from the IL.
Landen Roupp RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, 6/1 GO/AO. ERA= 4.07. Roupp with the Quality Start and left the game with a 6-2 lead. I will spare you the details but 4 different relievers contributed to this collective Blown Save. This is why it's hard to imagine this team mounting any sort of serious comeback. Every time it looks like they might be gaining some traction, they find a new way to faceplant. Yes, the bullpen is a big part of that but if it's not the bullpen, it's the rotation and if it's not the rotation it's the lineup failing to hit and if it's not that it's atrocious defense.
The Braves come to town to start a weekend series tomorrow evening with TBD facing Reynaldo Lopez RHP.
You could maybe start assigning numbers to the way they lose: 1) bullpen, 2) starting pitcher 3) atrocious defense 4) hitters failed to attend game, 5) other (base running, umpires, coaching, weather, groundskeeping, etc.) . Today they had a type 1 loss, bringing the total type 1 losses to 12 on the season (or whatever that number would be)
ReplyDeleteI do not recall ever seeing a Giants team that is so inconsistent. 18 runs one game and then 1 run the next. Early season bullpen was highly ranked in the league. Seems like less so now.
GIants are 22'nd in Team ERA, 26'th in Saves and 26'th in Save opportunities. Interestingly they only have 10 Blown Saves which is among the lowest in MLB. So the bigger problem is not Blown Saves but a lack of Save opportunities which suggests that hitting and starting pitching are bigger problems.
DeleteGut says hitting (overall) is not the problem, but gut also says that RISP hitting is not good. And thus, I attribute the current inconsistencies on the relief staff (it seems at least we've gotten good starts, recently). Checking my assertion on the hitting: according to Baseball Reference & MLB, Giants currently rank:

Lack of power is what stands out there. I also think there is a maldistribution of run scoring. What happens if you take out the "blowout" game where they scored runs in the high teens?
DeleteYou also have to add in they rank #27 in OBP. So lack of runners on base and lack of power is the exact opposite of the Earl Weaver formula.
DeleteKillian's return was a nice story, but he seems to be allergic to the 9th inning. As a former P, I never bought the trope that "the last three outs are the hardest," but seems true for him. I kinda recall it was thet way for Mark Davis in his Giants years...put him in a game early, or one Gs were behind, he'd come in with a clean 2 innings and strike out 4...put him in a save oppty, and he's choke.

DeleteKilian has 5 Saves in 7 Save Ops, not great but a better ratio than Ryan Walker, Erik Miller, Keaton Winn and Matt Gage.

The final coup de grace will 90% belong to the Atlanta Braves this week end.
The Giants have too many problems to fix as noted by Anon above.
Adames’s big numbers last year came in garbage time, after his seemingly endless slump put the team out of contention.
ReplyDeleteWe need near MLB ready bullpen arms in trades before the deadline. Trent Harris is a guy I would mull bringing up.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that I want to call out is the Giants have really struggled with outfield defense going back to the Farhan era. I am starting to think that their positioning data might be off. They have second to last FRV since 2020 in the outfield. And even players who have the tools to be good/solid defensively have not played well JHL and Ramos stand out to me.
