DrB's 2026 Giants Top 50 Prospects: Honorable Mention(AA)

Marques Johnson RHP.  DOB:  7/4/2000.  6' 2", 210 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Now.

2025(A+):  1-1, 2.08, 26 IP, 11.42 K/9, 4.85 BB/9, 2.85 GB/FB.
2025(AA):  1-2, 2.90, 31 IP, 13.06 K/9, 4.65 BB/9, 1.16 GB/FB.

Acquired in 2023 from the White Sox for Mauricio Llovera.  Strong athletic frame.  Solid fastball which ranges from 93-98 MPH.  Fangraphs lists slider as a 60.  Strong numbers at two levels last season.  May need to tighten up the walk rates but could play as-is as a reliever which appears to be his MLB destiny.  Will we see him pitching in Oracle Park sometime in 2026?

Trystan Vrieling RHP.  DOB:  10/2/2000.  6' 4", 200 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Now.

2025(AA- Yankees):  1-2, 4.50, 46 IP, 8.22 K/9, 3.52 BB/9.
2025(AA-Giants):  1-1, 5.14, 28 IP, 9.32 K/9, 3.21 BB/9.

Acquired from the Yankees in the Camilo Doval trade.  ERA's combined with pedestrian K rates and flyball tendency not particularly inspiring from a projection standpoint.

Nick Sinacola RHP.  DOB:  10/29/1999.  6' 2", 205 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Now.

2025(AA):  4-2, 3.30, 57.1 IP, 7.38 K/9, 4.24 BB/9.

Uninspiring numbers before season ended with a series of IL stints after last start on 7/12.

Aeverson Arteaga SS.  DOB:  3/16/2003.  B-R, T-R.  6' 1", 170 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Now.

2025(AA):  .189/.239/.269, 6 HR, 5 SB, 6.1 BB%, 26.2 K/9.

Can maybe give him a mulligan in his first season back from an extended injury but those are ugly numbers.  Will need to improve on those by a lot to stay viable as a prospect.

Nate Furman 2B. DOB:  7/23/2001.  B-L, T-R.  5' 8", 180 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Now.

2025(A+):  .364/.490/.649, 6 HR, 3 SB, 15.6 BB%, 7.3 K%, 96 PA.
2025(AA):  .369/.493/.607, 15.4 BB%, 20.5 K%, 39 PA.

Older prospect, small stature.  Calling card is elite bat control and strike zone management.  Is there a path to the majors for him with the Giants?

    There wasn't for Meckler

    1. He's not Wade Meckler and he doesn't play Meckler's position. Agree they are similar players.

  2. What does "Rule 5 Eligible Now" mean?

    1. It means they could have been drafted in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft.

    2. Does it means that, if a player is not drafted at the time of the draft, the team will retain the player for the year or indefinitely?

If the player is not drafted they stay with their organization another year, then will be eligible to be drafted again. At some point they become a minor league free agent although the rules for when that happens are murky.

    4. You are right in that the rules are murky. Baseball America says its when their minor league contracts expire and usually its six seasons. I'm not sure why Baseball America said "usually" because that would imply that there are loopholes. That's how they were to re-acquire Caleb Killian recently and the Giants' class of minor league free agents included Hjelle, Bishop, Waites, and Stassi.

    5. There are a number of familiar names on the minor league free agency list including Phil Bickford, Christian Arroyo, Brebbia, Will Wilson, and Tromp. This is truly the "Brebbia Aisle". Arroyo signed with the Mets and Brebbia with the Rockies but it seems like the end of their baseball careers for most of the 574 minor league FAs.

  3. Also means that if the Giants are afraid of another team taking the player, he has to be placed on the 40 man roster.

  4. Well, SSS be damned, Nate had a helluva year. BBREF even shows him also hitting over .400 in SJ in '25...over, like 12 ABs.

  5. Thankfully it seems like the Rule 5 draft just occurred last month, so all of these Hon Mention folks have 2026 to show their mettle correct? I am bracing for the 2027 MLB storm even though it is a ways away. Also, I still recall some of the best prospects jumping straight from AA to MLB but I suppose that is less common now?

    1. Yes, no risk of losing more prospects to the Rule 5 Draft till next December. I would say more elite prospects jumping from AA to MLB but Buster seems to want to pump the brakes on that for the Giants. I think we all agree Farhan was too aggressive in promoting prospects which created some of the logjam they have now and probably cost them some prospects.
